Dawson: Scam of the Day?

This was forwarded by a reader. There is a company called American Energy Solutions in Kansas, but a rep told me it has no connection whatsoever with the ?American Energy? in this story. Moreover, the mail box for the phone number is full.  I smell a scam. But I only report ? you decide:

A ?company,? American Energy, claiming to be contractors for the US government to perform home energy audits is aggressively seeking appointments with people in the Orlando area.  They have contacted both me and my husband by cell phone.  My husband scheduled an appointment and was given a confirmation number which sounded very official.  But, it was a terrible feeling once ?Robert? arrived.

He knew his stuff about energy and about homes, and his presentation was based on facts, dates, and recent news. He is a born salesman.  He called his ?boss? when he arrived and said he was at his appointment with us. The speech was well rehearsed. He had many energy saving tips that I had heard before from the power company when they came a few years ago for a similar energy audit.  In the end he wanted to sell us a solar powered hot water tank, which would ?pay itself off in a short amount of time? between the rebates we would receive from the power company and the federal government.

The guy was here  two hours  hoping we would commit that night and left us with two handouts; however, his name and phone number were absent. There was no company name.   I was bothered by his comments that he is especially worried about the elderly folks who are on fixed incomes and who are going to be taken advantage of by the hasty power companies who have continued year after year to raise rates.  He sells his product as American made and the right thing to do.

Today, ?Kimberly? called my cell phone, so I took the opportunity to press for information about the companies name, government connection, and their phone number.  She confirmed their name as ?American Energy,? stated they were contracted by the US government, and she was calling from a line that would lead to a automated line only. I asked her to give me the automated phone number and she hung up on me.

The phone number she called from was 407-517-8391.
