I have the definitive answer for everyone.

First, this is NOT a scam. This is McGill University asking for money through a program called "Phonathon".

I filed a complaint today with the director of that program regarding the "swatting" incident that was a result of my getting angry with their harassment by continuing to call after being asked to be removed countless times from their calling list.

My suggestion - call McGill University and ask for the director of the "Phonathon" program. Register your complaint with him. Take names, ask for followup action.

Advise them that what the are engaging in is illegal under the criminal code of Canada.

McGill can no longer please stupid on this. They have been informed by phone and in writing. If they call again I will file a complaint with my local police department and with the authorities in Montreal.

We have been receiving calls from this number for years. I have asked many, many times for them to stop calling. My wife is a former alumni and they call asking for her by name. Last night I blasted a guy for calling. In retrtribution, the caller contacted the local police and gave them false information resulting in our home being "swatted".

I have been on the phone with McGill for an hour now. I was put over to their security department. They told me to send a complaint to campus.security@mcgill.ca which I am not doing.

The number they called from was 514-398-8431.

This is now a case of criminal harassment. I hope McGill does their due diligence.

Thank you. I got a phone call from this number today.

Asked to be removed from list twice and to be added to "do not call list" twice. None of the 4 requests worked. Still calling at least once a week. As a suggestion to the rest of you, save the number from the call display and add it to your blocked call list. Now calls from that particular McGill number (almuni asking for money) will not go through to you, nor will the poor students making the calls have you get upset at them. Voila!  :-)

That's the scam, they just use McGill's name so someone would give them money. Never give your credit card info! If you want to donate, call officisal McGill number from their web site and ask how to do that.

The number shows up on their own documents. It is registered to them.

I just called McGill. The phone number is not registered to the school. The caller is running a scam.

This number called my inlaws who live 10 hours away and asked for me by my new married name which I havent even put in paperwork to change yet. Ive also had nothing at all to do with McGill. Only place I changed my name was facebook. So seriously, what?

I totally agree, me too. I got a good education at McGill, but the experience... never again. If McGill was a country, it would be North Korea. They rule their students with fear, sanctions and treats and don't give a crap about your well-being. I also agree with the statement about having lots of personal criticism that are often unfair and overly harsh, and the amount of internal politics and bureaucracy is disgusting. It seems that every supporting staff is unhappy at McGill (must be because they get paid peanuts) and their goal is to make your life hard too.

I also got treated badly. the amount of personal criticisms hidden at academic evaluation and politics at architecture is amazing and i wish not to give money at this time. It is worthy of a sit com unless you are in the line of the cross fires.

I assume you are an alumnus.  I got a good education at McGill, but theytreated us (me, my wife, and every other stuent I knew) like crap.  Screw 'em

It was friggin annoying. I recognized that it was a McGill number right away since it started from a 398. I knew it was some freak call. I googled it right away and found the exact answer what I was looking for. Thank you very much guys fellow mcgillians for posting here!

They just called me from 514-398-8431 and when I insisted to get a number to call back they gave me 1-800-8728431. They said that it is a routine call from McGill University but declined to give any other details as the call was not for me.

called and left no message.  I called back from another phone and it was IL Title Loans.

Caller said to be calling for donations to alumni fund for McGill University which I usually do give to. I donated by debit card, and someone charged $250. to my acct. Obviously I cancelled my card and will never do that again! Also, there was never any donation to McGill University. BEWARE!!!

THEY CALLED ME THREE TIMES IN THE LAST DAY OR SO, REPORT THEM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

We have received dozens of calls from this number over the past few weeks.  No voicemail message is ever left.  I phoned the number way outside of business hours and learned from the recording that it IS McGill!

they asked you to donate money by giving them your credit card number. A little creepy!

called me, I picked up, dead air, after a minute they hung up.
Very annoying.  Happened twice, once on a Sunday evening.

If it happens again, no more $ for them!
