This was the U.S. State Department's security clearance team. I had called with an issue earlier in the day and left a voicemail, and received a call from this number in return this evening. They left a voicemail for me, so I know this was the State Department and I know this was legit.

Sure it was!!! Sounds a little fishy to me.

It was a government agency - they called me at work (I'm in HR) and they just needed the payroll department to submit a wage garnishment form for an employee. It's legit.

This call was made at exactly 9:30:00 a.m. and left no message. Sort of like a computer dialed the call, right? It is probably a spoofed caller ID (Dept Of State) because the State Department is in Washington DC (area code 202), not in Arlington, VA (571). Note also the incorrect capitalization: I suspect the actual State Department would set up its caller ID with correct capitalization (Dept of State). Other callers report that the line is dead when answered; calling the number back probably only confirms that your number is valid, resulting in telemarketers and scammers calling you back from myriad other numbers. All this evidence points to this number being a spoofed caller ID that is part of a questionable telemarketing or scamming operation.

Look at it this way, it's your government in action. They are trying to "serve" you, but you are too busy to take their calls. But they do keep trying, see? Unfortunately, they, too, are too busy to bother to leave their name or direct 'phone number. Why, you might well have the unmitigated gall to call them back while they are busy trying to reach others they want to serve, too, or maybe even while they are trying to call you, you ingrate! So, stand to attention and await a call from whomever, wherever, and be quick about it. It is, after all, your government in action. Trying to serve you. Ingrate!

We left a phone message for our special phone line on Wednesday with a government agency that has ties to the State Department. On Thursday morning that phone line rang. We answered. No answer on their end--just dead silence. We hung up. The line rang several more times over the course of the next 10 or so minutes. Each time the line would ring maybe three times then stop. We did pick up the phone once during all those rings, without saying anything, and once again there was dead silence on the other end. Bunch of creepy SOBs.

It is the switchboard number for the United States Department of State building in Arlington, Virginia. All numbers from State building calls use that number. Audix is the voice messaging system they use, but you can only reach a person if you have their extension number.
