I received a call on July 22, 2011 from something identified as  ''IDENTITY THEFT PROTECT 800-347-3089 UT,'' a call that is currently billed on my Discover card.    

    In fact, i never even answered the phone but got charged $9.99 for something about which i have no idea as to what it is except that it poses as some sort of ''identity protection'' [???], something i neither wanted nor asked for.

Appears to be Discover identity theft protection

My senior citizen mom is being charged $59.95 a month from these guys.  She never signed up for this.  I called and they played back the part where she says "yes".  They don't say what she says "yes" to.  Mom said no way would she ever sign up for this.  We cannot get the charges off her account and they keep appearing each month.  UNBELIEVABLE SCAM.  It's quite obvious that they prey on senior citizens.  

Shouldn't our attorney general be doing something about this?

So how do you get them to stop. I called as well and yes they said it will take a month to check the recording. I want it cancelled and will keep calling I guess. Real smooth how they do it. Actually with me they had someone who barely spoke English which even made it more confusing. Nice way to treat long time customers.

Don't answer calls from here. It's Discover Card's Indentity Theft Service, and they will record you. First they ask silly questions, like your name... every time you say "yes," they record it. Someone who speaks very fast will get you to say "yes" to a few questions. Some time after the phone call, you will get a $10 charge on your credit card for identity theft protection, even if you said "no" specifically to the offer.

When you call to dispute the charge, they tell you it'll take a month to clear and that they have recorded you and must go back "and check the recording."

this is the number i found in my statement. discovery card used to have a theft protection service which they have sold to a different company.
now that discovery services does not have anything to do with this service, THEY JUST DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. this is unfair. please cancel this service and switch to CHASE; same price and much better service. my point, i've signed up with them for this service, why point is why should i have to call someone else to cancel this service. besides the terms and options they've originally offered you are no longer available; like cheking you own credit on line without limits.
