thats what happened to us,

we received a message on our answer machine with a name and number and an extension.  It said that they were an attorney firm in regards to my husband.  I called back and when i asked for the person who left the message they didn't know who he was.  They then went on and said that they were drawing up papers to be served to the district attorney in our county and that the only way to stop was to pay$1200, from an online cash advance from cash-net usa, from Sept 2012.  They said the advance was direct deposited into a washington mutual account of which we have never had.  They informed us if we did not  settle this out of court there will be officers to serve with a warrent for his arrest.  It's scary because they have all his information, and even threatened that they had an affidavet from the dmv for his drivers licence.  I almost gave my debit card number out of fear that they were legitimate, but my husband tried to find the firm online and came up with all of these other accounts, stating the same thing we were told.  When I almost gave her my card number she was quite pleasant, until my husband questioned her a little more.  My husband is on workers comp and we are living on really tight means.  They said they were based in New York, and my husband had a hard time believing that he could be arrested when we haven't had any communication from cash-net usa except to offer us loans.

These people called me today they told my relatives that I owed a check what kind of place is this. These people said I'd better pay this check.

I spoke to them and confirmed what we all think.....complete scam.  Even if it wasn't, I would be extremenly hesistant to conduct business with any compnay, much less a "law firm" that is this shady.  They aren't going to "serve" anyone.

I also got this call. I work for a law firm so I know how stuff operates!  In the past, I have called people back to laugh at them which REALLY makes them mad.  However, this one I will just delete.

A couple of things to remember here.  Debt is a civil issue not criminal.  They can sue you in court to recover debt but they need to prove you owe money and that they have the legal right to collect the debt.  Search for the Consumer Guide to the FDCPA on the FTC website and also for Debt Collection Scams.  

Any criminal charges have to be filed by the appropriate Prosecutors Office, local, state or federal and an arrest warrant issued.  With debt, the only criminal offense would be fraud, ie taking out a loan with no intention of paying it back.  

If they call again, demand a "debt validation notice" sent via US Mail.  Chances are near 100% they will refuse and keep bullying you. Do not admit to anything about a debt until after you receive the written notification and ensure it meets all the requirements of the FDCPA and that the debt has not passed the statute of limitations on debt in your state.

Legitimate collection agencies have no problem providing a proper debt validation and never open their contact with threats of any kind since that is illegal.

YES it is a scam!!! Just went through this the past 2 days with them!!!! If your concerned then call your local courthouse and check.

Was called by the "Comal County Representative" that they are trying to serve me paperwork. They gave me the above number and said it was the Law Office of Segal, Bennett, and Associates. I called the above number and spoke with a Jessica Ortize. She stated that the charges that I was being charged with stemed from a loan I took out in 2010 from a pay day loan company (which I never did). She stated that she could stop the charges and stop our scheduled court date if I payed them $5,900. I said no, take me to court. She said fine and hung up on me. I waited to get served my papers by the sheriff and nothing. I was called at 2pm by the same person who claimed to be with he sheriff's office and when I told her I had called the sherriffs department and they had no record of any papers that I was getting and that the charges that were being filed would not be with them anyways. She told me that the processer was actually a private company and that they tried to serve me today but that since I refused the papers she had no choice but to get a warrant issued for my arrest but........if I called the so called Law Office again that it might not be to late to get it taken care of out of court by paying the $5,000. Again I said no, take me to court. I asked them what my court date was and she said that she couldnt tell me that. I asked for the number to the person serving the papers so I could get them. She stated it was to late unless I agreed to pay the money. I then hung up on her and called the Comal County Courthouse and spoke to the County Clerk who looked up my name and I was not on the docket in any County or City Courtroom and that there were no charges filed against me by anyone. This company is in New York and can't even serve anyone papers with a court date unless charges are filed with the county clerk. So this is a scam, DO NOT GIVE THESE OR ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO GIVE YOU INFORMATION ON THE CASE EVEN OF THEY KNOW SOME OF YOUR INFORMATION!!!!

Wow..two messages on my home phone from Atty Lisa Campbell and one from an appraiser, Leonard Kofax saying he was from Broward County Home Appraiser's office at 115 S. Andrews Ave., Ft. Ldle.  Said he was coming to our house on Monday between 4:30 and 5:00 pm.  I called back the number he called from and it's a fax machine. Campbell says court is on Monday and there are two charges against us.  She gave me a case number that is completely bogus.  They also called my husband's cell and he answered.  They told him there is an outstanding Chase bill for $28,000 !!!!!  Yeah, right!  This is definitely a scam.  I am going to contact an atty and sue if they harrass us anymore and call the police if Mr. Kofax comes on my property.

Let us hear from you if you are having trouble with these low-life scumbags,  Let others know not to panic from their treats.

Death from Laughing,   after reading Kyle's post, below,   I believe that I may have made an error in judgement in thinking that you were criticizing Kyle.  (aka  Kayle).    I too now believe that your post was intended toward  "Marey" the scammer.  If this is true,  I humbly apologize and regret the conclusion.

This is a scam.  I got a phone call concering my daughter.  I returned the phone call and they wanted me to veirfy her personal information.  When I refused the man got bery upset with me and told me that I did not know much about my daughter which is a lie.  They said it was a warrant for fraud.  This IS NOT TRUE. Do not give them any personal information.

Check your own spelling Rupe.  Mis-spellings?   Most would spell it  "misspelling".   You misspelled it three times.
"I can't think of nothing to say"    Double Negative there..Rupe!   And if you will look a little closer,  you will find that most words were deliberately misspelled,  mocking the scammer.   Like the deliberate misspelling (check that spelling)  of the words used by the scammer in his posts.   Death Beat  instead of Deadbeat.  (one word)  Kayle instead of Kyle and the other ones mentioned.  Get a sense of humor.  Everyone who posts here can be ripped apart by any duffus who wants to make an issue out of spelling and using slang words. It's not a spelling bee and people will express themselves differently.  You need to collectively get your s*** together and your ability to think and  reason before you start pointing out others "Misspellings".

Perhaps you should go back and read all of the other posts prior to that one.....again.  Then you might understand what his point was in using the name   "death beat"   as well as some of the other comments.  Open up you mind a little bit and maybe it won't be beyond your ability to grasp.

Got a phone call yesterday from the people at this number saying they had a claim from the county i live in about an unpaid payday loan. they said i had to have 1100 by friday at 9am or they would serve me and i could be charged with Check fraud. Are these people scammers?

My husband received the same message. They even called his work. I know this is a scam.

These people are crooks and I am tired of them calling my number. They should go to jail for this!
