Unfortunately, Robin Garica has expanded to the Internet - namely Facebook Marketplace.

Placed an ad in "Marketplace" on Facebook and got a response from ROBIN GARICA (as noted in one of the complaints). He wants the $50 piano I am selling for his client in Malaysia, and is sending me a check to cover it plus shipping charges and his commission - which I am to send to him immediately. Gave him my phone # and asked him to call and discuss with me, but alas, his email back said he is deaf and can only use the Internet. Unfortunately, he has my name, address and phone number. Haven't received the check yet.

I just called the FBI and they said that they can threaten me all they want.  But they can't arrest me. They said ignore the phone calls and don't return them. Don't pay anything either. It was fishy because the man I first spoke with said, "I am calling on behalf of your country." I thought that was strange.

Did anyone get in any trouble for not paying? I got a message on my cell phone from a man who could barely speak English! So I called them back and they gave me the run around. The first man I spoke to, when I questioned him about what the debt was for, told me in foreign tongues what it was for. I asked him to repeat it in English and he said he refused. Then he hung up on me. I called yet again and I heard other phones ringing in the background. Whoever answered that time said to call back and hung up on me again!

Just got a call from a guy could not tell what his name was but left a message telling me that it would be in my best interest to call him back because he is not sure if he could stop what is going to happen next.

What I don't understand is how does he know my full name and number?

His name is John of India decent and wants me to pay him over the phone. His phone is 901-328-9334. Won't give me the name of the payday loan company.  I live in Texas and he said he was going to have an investigator come out and arrest me and would spend 38 days in jail.  I am a single parent with minimal income and said I would make payments, but, he said no and they would come to my work to arrest me.

OMG - I received a call from 901-328-9334.  The guy said his name was Frank Miller.  Definitely not an english speaking person.  He has a very heavy Indian accent.  Told me all of the same information that everyone else has written.  That I was going to be arrested for default on a payday loan 4 years ago.  He left a message on my office phone that he could not leave confidential information on my voicemail, but it was a very important legal matter and I needed to call him back immediately or have my attorney call him back.  When I called him, he said "oh my God, you mean you haven't been advised about this issue?".  He told me that they were filing court proceeding against me in the State of Florida, and that I was going to go to jail, but if I wanted to settle out of court he would see what he could do to help me.  So .... first thing I did was ask him for his fax number.  Well guess what, I tried to fax a cease and desist order and the fax number was disconnected.  So I called back and naturally he wasn't there.  I did find out that there are 18 business run from this same phone number.  They did give me a company name Financial Crime Protection, but they don't have a mailing address, don't have a website or email address, they don't accept money order payments only payments via credit card or debit card.  If they think I'm giving them any of my credit or debit card info they're crazy.  As soon as I'm done here I am going to report this "Frank Miller" to every single agency listed above.  And on Wednesday when he calls me back I will tell him to contact the Feds and everyone else.

at least i am not the only one who gets these calls.  what can we do about it.  i did not answer any of the calls except one time when i heard that accent voice i hung up.  then left a voicemail and asked why i hung up on them for it was a serious matter.  they would leave voicemails saying that i or my attorney needs to call back or it becomes a legal matter.  i wish they would stop calling me and other innocent people.

I just received a call from James Matthews 901-328-9334 stating that I owed money from 2006. I knew it was a scam since I was scammed in 2006 by another company. I am aware of these types of calls. He kept calling my emplpoyment over and over and I didn't answer. He left 4 messages saying hanging up on him was not the correct thing to do and I need to call him before 4:30 or I will be locked up. After the first call I didn't answer.

these people called me again and when i answered since it was blocked caller id.  i answered and hung up.  this time a person named james matthew left me a message and said that he is putting it into a legal matter.  he cannot leave confidential information on voicemail.  he asked why i hung up on him and so forth.  he says if i or my attorney does not call him back it will turn in to ugly legal matters. the number he left was 901-328-9334.

yes these guys called me too as well.  the gentleman name is jason hunt and left me a message saying it was an extremely time sensitive urgent matter.  he could not leave any confidential information in voicemail for we need to discuss in details of the matter and failure to hear from me or my retained attorney will lead to a lack of refusal to call back and go into legal matters which includes embarrasment to me.  he wish me good luck with this matter.  i had a similar situation happened to me before and i am so glad to be able check out this site.  i do not want to talk to these people nor have anything to deal with them.  how can we stop these people.

It's a scam.  There's no such thing as a Federal Investigation Bureau or United Legal Processing.

This is a very active group of overseas scammers who attempt to extort money from Americans with a myriad of false and illegal threats. They alternately pose as debt collectors, federal and state law enforcement officers, lawyers and bankers. They use any number of phony names such as US National Bank, Federal Investigation Bureau, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Hopkins Law Office, United Legal Processing, Morgan Associates, White Collar Crime Unit and many more.  These crooks often use caller-id spoofing software and/or VoIP to disguise their real location and to make it appear that they are calling from American area codes.

(By the way, there are some reports on 800Notes that have suggested that the crooks behind this offshore scam are also the crooks behind the notorious Bass/Ellis Crosby & Assoc./States Predisposition scams in Florida and Georgia. The interesting thing is that the number of complaints on here about the US National Bank/US Legal Investigation/Federal Investigation scam skyrocketed *after* Florida obtained a $1.3 million judgment against Ted Ellis Crosby, shutdown his operations and barred him from ever conducting debt collections in Florida. (Read http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsrel ... 5257424005858A6 )

The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) And since these foreign dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement, it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection.  (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)

The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money. I suggest you do all the following (most of which you can do online):

1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone who are posing as federal law enforcement. Be sure to give as many details as you can.

3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.

4) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

5) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:
