That is actually completely incorrect.  Once an account is assigned for collections, the collection agency gets paid on consignment regardless of who you pay.  The creditor enters into a contract the same way you did when you obtained the credit to begin with.  If the agency does not get paid, the creditor becomes the debtor.

Additional myths;
Debts are purchased by collection agencies.  If you have a 10 year old MBNA account then yes, it is entirely possible BUT if your account has been sent to collections in the past 5 years, the agency is working on behalf of the original creditor.  No major bank is going to sell off your 10k visa account for pennies on the dollar because you went 180 days in arrears.

Collection agencies can settle for whatever they like.  Wrong again!  Because your debt has not been purchased and the agency is working on behalf of the creditors, the creditor sets guidelines in which the agency needs to follow for settlements ie. 80%.  Should you require additional savings, you can apply for what is called a below parameter settlement and in which case you will need to provide financial information such as proof of income, proof of additional debts, assets etc.  The bank/agency are under no obligation to settle any debt.  Remember, you signed a legally binding contract indicating you would pay all monies owed including interest, late penalties, over limit fees etc.

Generally speaking, collections will work with you to resolve the issue.  Be decent and honest and they will try to help you.  Yell and name call and you will end up on that nasty auto dialer that calls you 20 times a day!

Short for 'Credit Bureau Of Canada Collections'.  They are located at 1450 Meyerside Dr Unit 7th Flr,  Mississauga, ON
L5T 2N5 Tel: (905) 670-7575, Toll Free: (800) 256-8964. I figure they know so much about us, why not know some information about them. I am a victim in this situation. I let a horrible man into my life. It was like a 20/20 episode you see on TV and you say to yourself how can that woman be so stupid. How could she not have seen that coming. Well, it happened to me. They start by asking very innocent questions by masking them as questions of wanting to get to know you. The next thing you know, they have your mother's maiden name, they somehow found your social insurance number etc. That is all they need. These people know what is required to get CREDIT under your name. All they have to do is do it from your home phone. One day when your not home, they simply get another girl to pretend to be you and voila! They have a credit card in their name under your account. To make the abuse even more degrading, they even change the mailing address and phone number so that you don't even know it happened until it is too late.

As for the credit bureaus afterwards, no matter how many times you try to explain, they don't care. They have a job to do. Quota's to fill. You pay for that phone line yet you don't seem to have any rights to it. Worse, if it is a cell phone, you get charged every single time. It is a viscous cycle with no answer in sight.

i to get harrassed everyday by creditors looking for the prevous owner of the cell phone i've also had for almost 3 yrs, the latest one comes up unknown caller and when i answer the call i get the automated saying "this is a very important phone call from CBCC, please stay on the line for the next available representitive"....hellloooooooooo you called my phone # and expect me to be put on hold and wait..i dont think so, if they really want to get in touch with you, there should be an actual person on the other end when you do answer the phone    They call you, your not calling them.....I wish i could actually find the person who had my phone # previous because this person has caused me much frustration and anxiety and i wish i could nail them to the wall.......

here is a pearl:
i called telus to check something with my mobile phone bill. Placed on call, waiting more
than 15 minutes, my contempt against these b*****s grew to a boiling point
Finally, a person answers
-how may I ...
me: just cancel my account starting right now please!
-sure
me: I know you record all the calls. this is September 2009 and I'm done with Telus
-may I ask why are you leaving Sir?
me: sure. I just waited more than 15 minutes for my call to be answered. That is a stunt gone bad fellas

January following year, someone from Telus called me:
-Why aren't you paying your bills Sir?
me: right. which ones?
-October, November, December and January

me: what bill? is this about the account I cancelled in September?
-(after mandatory b/s checkup) yes Sir
Me: that you will not receive from me willingly. A clear Instruction has been given to 'you'
to cancel the account .. hope you did
he, he he..he he

i've gotta share this one
back in 2001, I bought a plane ticket for my niece to come over visit us
I paid with Visa as usual. Visa was with CitiBank
In those days, I'd pay entire balance immediately, all the time
Here is what made me tired and changed all that
-so said Visa bill arrives  next month. I pay the balance ($950+) in full
all is good, its June in Vancouver and the sun shines again
But, sometime between I purchased the ticket with Visa and paying Visa off,
Visa mob decided it was bright idea to switch their customers from Visa
to MasterCard -unilaterally, that is without even our signatures as a proof we approve
of such a stupid move (these were the heydays of mutual funds and corporate mergers)
Few days later, I've got now MasterCard's bill for same amount plus interest
I argued a lot. They threatened. This went on for guess how long? As i promised: "you shall not get paid again, ever"
7 yrs. Finally they lost interest because of legal guidelines. At the end of this tirade, I was supposed to owe them $6000+. They never got 1 penny of course.

10 yrs later they wanted my business back?!

Moral of the story?

Banks are no better then telcos. As evil as. Here is the story how to kick them in the ...
My accountant begs me to open dedicated business account. She said: you run to much
business to online account (which is free of charge BTW)
-I finally agree, so off I go to the bank
Bank manager there places stipulation: "each cheque I bring needs to
be initialed before its cleared same day. otherwise, 5 buss. days to clear"
This happened because my credit score is low (half dozen telcos aren't being paid the way they want)
+ I refused to sign directors's guarantee. (Never sign those-Whats the point of going "Limited" then ?!)

Almost 3 yrs go by. By now, when bank personnel see me, they like me, I can tell
I'm proud how many telcos (collectors) are begging me to pay their pseudo bills
But, each time I come,  managers (got to know them
all by name) start scrambling, with their pens
Finally, one bold fella (one of the managers) comes across, with smile on his face, obviously tired of signing my cheques
all the time:
Bank manager -we need to talk, John Smith
-indeed
M - why don't you pay your phone bills?
- I'm chastising telcos, remember? We went thru this half dozen times, Tonie
M -you need to pay your bills!
- after 3 yrs and all my cheques clearing, and after  bringing thru this branch hundreds of
thousands of dollars, you still don't trust me? I told you I'm not paying because bills are pseudo
and because I like chastising telcos for that. Why tell me what to do?
Now you've insulted me. Just keep on showing up when I need your
signature from now on, please. I don't need your opinion
M- I don't need to initialize your cheques..
I COME IN HIS PERSONAL SPACE, about 10" away, with minor voice and a fake smile:
- I don't need to stay with your bank. The only reason I stayed with CIBC 3 yrs
is because I'm too lazy to cancel the account. But you just pulled the rug under your feet MATE

A week later I took all the cash out and closed the account in a fashion similar to Cesar's triumphal
entry back in Rome, so everyone knew why I was leaving
Old moral of the story:
"don't bite the hand that feeds you"

New moral of the story:
"bite the hand that feeds you -- if federal reserve keeps printing cash on-tap"

I show no mercy to telcos. In all honesty, I'm little bit too cruel to them because of their
corporate policies. long gone are days when customer was (always) right
a year ago, I saw a new car at the dealer. Dealer played along.
I said: deliver this brand new car to my address by noon.
Salesman: No problem
Evening comes, 4 pm, close to closing time. No car no calls from my dealer
so I make super rare exception and call
-where's my car?
-sales rep: we need you to come and sign blah blah..credit score..blah..blah
me: I told you all; my credit is no good because I have half dozen telcos bent over for me
didn't I? why did I have to go thru all that paperwork? are you in cahoots with telcos now ?!
-Salesman: you need to correct it (bad credit) first sir
me: -I can not disagree more. We're done here

salesman: sorry to hear that
me: don't be sorry for me. you go tell your boss who can tell his
boss to gather auto industry to lobby Gvmnt against telcos lobby. how come telcos
can exert this kind of power and brown nose so deep -obviously at your own expense?
why can't you capture what good business you can?

salesman: *mute, jaw opened a little..*
me: truth is brutal, isn't it? you could probably still do one thing for me, though
salesrep: what is that?
me: (love this one) try to bend over and kick yourself in the ...

2-3 weeks later I come over with 3 yr old SUV and 50,000 km on the engine:
-anyone wants demo ride? still smells new ;)

when I get the call from one of 2-3 dozen phone numbers listed under the name "crooks" -I never answer
Sometimes, I a feel like being entertained, I will actually answer and its either:
a) it's a automated-dialed call that hangs up once I answer the call  (approx- 10% of time)
b) East Indian accented man/woman asks: is this 'John Smith'?
me: who wants to know?
-is this john smith?
me: what for?
-we need to talk to john smith
me: I'll tell him when I see him? what has he done now?
-we are canadian ...collection..mumbo jumbo
me: just cut right out making sure its in the middle of his pleas
c) -is this john smith?
me: just a second, I'll go get her. (leave phone under the pillow for 10-15minutes..99% of the time  they are gone and gone

Rogers home phone offered to take over our Bell home phone for less money monthly. I asked that my husband's name be put on the bill instead of mine, so they changed it.  The bill came one month later and was addressed to my husband. Everything looked great. After that we signed up for Internet with Rogers as well.  Bill came one month later and everything was fine.  Probably two years went by and I received a better deal from Bell.  Switched back to Bell.  Rogers needed their equipment back. My husband (name on Rogers bill) went to return it and refused him (and the equipment) because his name did not match the birthdate they had on file.  Rogers did not ask for his date of birth when they put his name on the bill originally.  So, when he presented hi ID, instead of making a photocopy of his drivers licence and applying the equipment to the bill (keep in mind that his name and address match Rogers information) they refused him.  Now, instead of ANYONE taking initiative to fix the problem at Rogers, my husband will always have my birthdate.  Collections call, but can't talk with my husband because they ask him for his birthdate. Since he has "the wrong one", he's not the person they're looking for.  CBCC called the house today asking me for the number they dialled.  I told them, "I don't know who you are and won't give you that information."  She told me then to enjoy the calls.  Call display is great. I can ignore them, the way they ignore us.  It's been three years, by now. So, if you think I'm nuts, you can understand why.  Four calls a day can wear on a person.  Laugh!

What about if the bills are pseudo? that is - in their (telcos) heads only?
What if I'm tired of arguing with some son of a **** each time i try to explain: "thus in not my charge" & " no, i will not orovide proof of payment" --and now I just choose to 100% ignore them?
Story:
Telus one day sends me a letter that I owe them $720+ dollars out of blue. What do I do? Run in circles scream and shout?! No way, that is them winning. I don't make a call, not a single one. Several warnin
arrive in mail. Disconnection notice day before action finally arrives 3-4 weeks later. I dial their number.ve Real person answers (i never speak with voice mail or people with Indian accent behind 10 sec pause--, no offence meant)
-why are you disconnecting me?
male: you haven't paid your bill Sir?
-why should I?
male: but..but..you're supposed to pay..
- pay what? $720+ for what please ?!
male: you haven't returned your sattelite dish data router when you switched over to optik
-right. each time I ho to flea market I can buy those slowpokes for $10-20 apiece. Here's the deal: I'll get dozen routers, you give me $350 (less than half price of value you charge now) and you keep the rest ?
male: we can do that Sir
-why not? you'll get tons of perfectly useless and obsolete gear that you guys are expert at providing anyway and held the economy. economy!
male: Sir, I'm afraid I'll have to hand your case over to collection agencies
-right. I'll  have hand Telus over to my brain's "enemy department"
male: i need to go now..good bye Sir
-I have proof I've returned wretched router, by the way
male: but..but..(stutters )
- I have a photo of your employee coming to my door, with the thing in his hand, and Telus ID tag
male: why don't you say so Sir?
-why should I?
male:* pause*

-if you call me, to say: John Smith is not your name , am I supposed to pull out my
Drivers licence to prove I am who i am, or are you supposed to know who I am BEFORE you usurp my time, space and energy !?
male: we're sorry Sir
-right. apology not accepted.  it's not you. your just tiny part of soulless mindless, eyeless, heartless evil corporation
and you're trying to make leaving. I get it
but for the record, this is my message to Telus (and any other Telcos) hoping you can do one thing right:
bend over and kick yourself in the ***. I bet you can't even do that?!
Useless as the tits on the bull. All Telcos are. Good bye

Back to today status quo:
-What if I chose to chastise Telus for their business nonsense? Chastise means: "I'm punishing you"
So, call all you want, but stone will bleed before one rusty penny comes out of my pocket
Furthermore, 10 or 20 yrs later, they'll come about. They will realize: this man will never pay those few $ he owes us..That is the time for apologies, trying to build a bridge and recover huge lost business, offer me a killer, unbelievable deals, crying for help... Worse thing is to have Rogers, Telis, Bell, Fido, Solo lose good business, right?
Wrong! worse thing is when they finally realize they'll never get paid & try genuinely to apologize- & I come back brutally brutal and say: "given same circstances, I'd do it all over again" Let this message sear into your neural pathways, fellas
-that you kiss my ***, not me yours- is reality. It's about control. I'll never let you
win. you can call but to no avail. it's a grudge. it will be gone when I'm gone- or you're gone. Banks and Telcos that gamble our $ on stock exchange like October 2008- they should be gone already. But they were saved by printers first time. Next time it will be disaster of Biblical proportions. "Governments change, people stay".economy will suck as long as telco bill takes precedence over, say-buying a car. let the car desler and banking lobby fight telco lobby at the gvmnt level..to scrap this stupid law (loyal client gets bad credit for unpaid/unjustified bills). serves them all right. enjoy your bustling economy fellas
wait till it happens to you
wait till it happens to you

I am being hassled by credit agencies on a weekly basis, because I was lucky enough to have someone's old cell phone number from 3 years ago. Bell told me it was a clean number, I go ahead and put it on my business cards and two weeks later the phone starts ringing off the hook looking for what I suspect was previous owner. There should be laws where you can be removed from lists to protect you from the predators (credit agencies).

These people harass me non stop, and only once was there someone on the line when I answered it. They were looking for Robbie Rabbit, a person who I believe had my cell # before me, because I have received other collection calls asking for them. I even went the extra mile and looked it up, and unbelievably they are legit. The government of Canada even has a webpage showing it. I personally could not comprehend why the government would tolerate these scumbags, but that's today's government for ya, hey? The link is here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/app/ccc/srch/nvgt.do?lang ... Don't assume that everyone receiving these calls just simply didn't pay their bills. Myself for instance, I was in a severely abusive relationship for many years, I had thing in my name but my ex took care of the bills.. Little did I know they we're being paid (example: furniture store card) we moved so often they prob lay had no way of contacting me. Up until now. 12 years later and I had NO idea I owed this money. Not everyone is aware of their past bills owing..

the prob aren't solvable that way. my # had been repeatly "recycled" by this collection calls for different names, no matter how many times I told them it's wrong # for wrong name, and every call i made it's long distance charge on my phone bill. In fact, if these collection calls were made by a real human being, they could have heard owner of the voice mail box had a totaly different name they were looking for. Just few minutes ago i complained to the woman on the other end of the phone call, she told me in a extremly bad manner that it's lots of easier for their job using machine to make these collection calls and i had to "enjoy" the calls if i did like phone them back on my own expenses.

You know what?! the 905-670-7575 itself is a big scam! The solution is you NEVER answer their calls and NEVER call them back, hopefully one day this scam will run out of the business.
