Our number is not (yet) on the National Do Not Call registry, and we have just started getting calls from this number as well, so it shouldn't have anything to do with being on that list.

"D" ... you are partly correct.  The calling number does not fit the North America Numbering Plan Administration;s (NANPA's) 10-digit format.  NANPA (run by Neustar) is responsible for assigning numbers to all US and Canadian providers (landline, cellular, VoIP, beeper, etc).  All NANPA numbers begin with a legitimate three-digit Area Code which must begin with a number from 2 to 9.

Meanwhile, it is quite simple for a nefarious character (or entity) to transmit a "spoofed" (phoney) CallerID ... and the spoof CallerID can be a real 10-digit number or a "silly" number such as the one under discussion, which does not fit any US, Canada or international dialing format.

The CallerID is sent with the voice data stream from the originating caller ... for legitimate phone calls, the caller's provider (not the caller himself) sends the CallerID info. For illegitimate phone calls, the bad guys can actually send out any number they want, via the internet not their local phone company.  The call  is carried over the internet and only hits your "phone company" at it's termination point (near your home).

Unfortunately, your own carrier (such as Verizon, ATT, Sprint, etc.) does not and actually cannot in most circumstances trace the source of these "spoofed" calls. Of course, the DO NOT CALL registration process is useless in the absence of a NANPA 10-digit CallerID format (or a non-existent US/Canada area code).

In essence, unless you can get your landline or cellular provider to block this number, there is little else you can do.

Options:
1) If you have a mobile phone (especially an iPhone) that allows assigning a specific ringtone to a number (or group of numbers), register the "spoofed" number(s) in your Contact list and assign that individual or group Contact a "silent" or short "bleep" ringtone.
2) Switch your service to a VoIP provider with a strong BlackList/CallerID Block feature: e.g., Voip.ms, CallCentric, VOIPo, PhonePower. With these providers, you can use wildcards to block a whole range of numbers with one entry.  For example, if I want to block all CallerIDs from an annoying calling bank that uses several similar numbers ... such as area code 973 in the 838 exchange with all of the last four beginning with 7 ... I can make a CallerID Block entry thusly: 9738387xxx.  All numbers from 973-838-7000 thru 973-838-7999 will be blocked.
3) Do not switch to Vonage which has the worst CallerID blocking feature among all of the other VoIP providers.

Landline usage is rapidly disappearing from homes in the US and Canada.  Cellular usage is rapidly increasing. And VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is gaining in popularity because it offers a wide range of free add-on features and either a fixed annual or monthly fee account for unlimited US/Canada calling -- or -- a very low priced monthly fee account with tiny per minute charges.

For example with a carrier such as VoIP.ms one can pay 99¢ (US) per month for a local phone number (or port your current number into a new account) and then pay around 1¢ per minute for incoming or outgoing calls.  The included feature set is awesome.

You will never find them this way.
Nowadays with just a few $ you can call from ANYWHERE in the world  and show whatever you want in the call display. Whoever called could be literally anywhere in the planet. The caller-id number is bogus.
You can also have a call back number with a certain country and city area code, and have it ring anywhere else.
The only way is to get the phone company involved. They have the correct routing data.

I just called Comcast and was told I could block up to 12 call for no fee.

Dial *60 and follow the instructions.

Hoping this will take care of this problem.

I received a call from this number tonight. When pressed the caller claimed to be from "the technical department" and wanted me to get to a computer with internet access.

When pressed, he gave me the number 301-357-8448 and claimed to be from Texas (the area code is from Washington, DC).

I've received numerous calls from this number that ended with a computer generated voice just saying, "Goodbye" before hanging up.

This is pretty annoying to say the least.

I too am getting dozens of these calls.  I noticed that Bonnie said a man with a foreign accent was trying to tell her there was a problem with her computer. This reminds me of a friend in England who got taken in by a scam like this. The man convinced her that her computer wasn't safe - that anyone could get in and steal information. Get this - he was moving her cursor around to convince her this was real! She paid him money (on her credit card) to have him fix it.   What a scary scam!

I have never picked up on this number however today I have been in a bad mood and I decided to answer and I got that automated "goodbye."  Years ago I had something similar happen to me when I was living with some friends.  The next month we got our phone bill for that one INCOMING call was over $500.  I have seen people say they have fairpoint.  I just recently switched to fairpoint so I am interested to find out if this is something with the fairpoint company.

They called a few times today and I just got off the phone with them. I decided to have some fun. I spoke with initial sales then a supervisor. They showed me all the problems in my laptop and then wanted to transfer me to tech support to get them resolved.

I then explained to him that they were my problems and I didn't want them removed. How would you feel if someone was trying to take something from you................................

That number calls me every day and I get the same robotic voice saying goodbye. I have registered and re-registered my number on the NATIONAL DO NOT CALL LIST multiple times and this still doesn't stop. This is very aggravating because I have a 5 month old baby who wakes up when the phone rings. I wouldn't mind him waking up because of the phone if there was actually a person on the line that is calling for a good reason!

Work for a police dispatch center.  Local resident receiving numerous calls from this number.  "Goodbye" and "Go Away" are comments that seem to come from a real person on the other end.  Advised resident to report number to her phone company so they can block it.

I received two calls from this number today.  I picked up the second call and there was nothing and then the same robotic "goodbye" as described above.  The only thing I can think of is that I did recently join some "do not call" and "do not mail" lists recommended in a Natural Health magazine to help minimize junk mail, etc.  I wonder if this is related...maybe someone in India has hacked the server of one of these "do not call" companies.  Can't remember which one I used but might have to look  back.

I too am on the "do not call list" and just received a call from this number.  He was very difficult to understand......from India, claiming we have computer problems, then, couldn't really understand him and hung up.  Very scary.  I did not put my reading glasses on first to look at the incoming phone #.  Geeezzzzz.............in your own home, have to check a number before answering for fear of those long distance area codes that rack up an astronomical phone bill with no recourse!!!!  I hope his dialing fingers fall off!!!!
