My mother called me panicking about how the tax revenue office from DC called her and was threatening her with legal action for inputing false information in her taxes. Funny thing is my mother does not handle the taxes in our household. They called multiple times a day with more threats saying the IRS was going to take action if their phone calls were not returned. After reading the prior comments I realized it was a scammer. Thank you to all who reported the number because my poor mother was losing her mind because of these harassing calls.

See, here's the thing - the IRS does NOT work this way!  The IRS doesn't say "well, you ignored the notices and because so much time has elapsed you only have the option to pay now or face arrest."  Only scammers do this.  And even if you didn't pay, guess what?  The IRS will just take the money you actually owe (plus added-on late fees) the next time you file taxes.  No threats, no arrests.

Scammers can get your information from many sources - so just because someone calls and has your personal information doesn't make them legitimate.

Again, the IRS does not call people up, threatening them with arrest because they haven't paid their tax bill - only scammers do this.

Scammers are good at phishing for information so do not be fooled by them. Your 3rd option is to ignore them. IRS will mail you if you owe anything, I went through an audit by them and I was told by mail. Also call your state IRS office, they can assist you more than I can.

The person who talked me knew my mail address and also said that notice was sent to me 90 days back. And I received no such notice. He said my time to address it has elapsed and that I have 2 options: 1) pay them the due amount now 2) Or get arrested and face other charges.

I got a call from this number and the person said he was an officer and he has a tax issue he wants to talk to me about.  His accent was very strong and sounded Indian.  I told him I would report this and he said do whatever you have to do.  I hung up and called back the number and the same person answered and said IRS so I hung up again and google this number and found this information.

Be aware, that if you DO owe taxes, the IRS will MAIL you something to that effect (I know this because my spouse owed taxes when he was self-employed).  The IRS does NOT call you about it.

There are scammers who call people saying they owe taxes and that they have to pay X amount of dollars immediately otherwise they'll be arrested for tax evasion.  The IRS doesn't work like that - so if anyone calls you saying you owe money, don't give them the time of day.

For the record, this is the collection process when you DO owe taxes to the IRS -   http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc201.html

Call the IRS directly if you have any questions - the numbers are on their website - http://www.irs.gov/uac/Telephone-Assistance
