This person called from Startel couple of weeks ago.  I'm in CT also and complaint from me is the same as most comments, here, about it being another electricity provider.  Funny thing here is this guy called and asked for me by name.  I asked him how he got my name, since the electric bill isn't in my name...duh...
I imagine he was looking at his own caller ID which I think some phones have.  I am also on national do not call list and advised him of same.  He got very insistant and argumentative, I gave him an earful and told him harrassment is not the answer and hung up on him.

Same issue. Callback was hung up on. *69 was hung up on, so I reported this to the FCC at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints. They don't do anything, but maybe they'll annoy this clown a little. Otherwise, I'm giving out his number in all my emails and searches today.

I don't know who is calling from this # 203 273 8586 .  When I call back the phone only ring once. Nobody pick up. The name that shows in caller ID is Startel LLC...

Caller said he was from CL&P talking about some discount and trying to confirm our address and looking for the electrical bill.

Calling, and listed as 'unknown' in caller id.  No message.

Why these calls when we are SUPPOSED to be on a No Call List?

Let it go to voicemail, no message was left.

Receive about 5-6 calls each week from this number.  When I call back one receives a message that the # is not in service.

Call was not answered, and they didn't leave a message.

Calls to my elderly mother's number.
No one there when answered.
Busy when dial back.
Sounds like a scam or a jerk

Called yesterday, 5/30 at 2:32 pm. I didn't answer as I didn't recognize the # or name. They didn't leave a message, these kind usually don't!

I got the same treatment as others.  I thought it was someone I knew; they hung up immediately.

Do Not call again or I will report you.

This message appears to be written by the scammer, with its sob story about you being the one breaking the law. It is clear that they ignore the DoNotCall list, that they have no "quality assurance" as the writer says; why should you believe them and give them any personally identifiable information like your account number? My numbers have been on the DoNotCall list since the first day it was open for registration. This scammer is obviously breaking numerous federal laws. 1. They are ignoring the DoNotCall laws. 2. They are faking their phone number; the Caller ID information said 856-335-1765 for the first two calls today and 203-274-8586 for the second two calls. 3. They are breaking the "2-second rule"; for the first two calls today, I answered but there was no one there. So there is no reason to trust them at all not to break numerous other laws, like fraud and identity theft.

Startel, LLC paid calling service for Starion Energy trying to get you to switch providers for electric service.   Say they have special deal that only lasts for a few days and they ask for your electric bill account number and name as it appears on account.  Very pushy.  They make it sound like they are calling from your current electric company...but they are not!

So, if you're on the Do Not Call Registry, and you don't want to get these calls *regardless* of their intent, file a complaint at http://www.donotcall.gov ! I just did that, and it's a great feeling! According to the FTC's info for telemarketers, "Violators may be subject to fines of up to $16,000 per violation. Each call may be considered a separate violation."

startell,  hello!  my  electric is a co-op     they have and never will have stocks nor anything to do with them,   to me its a scam,  way to get personal info ..... sorry  seen to many others  getting  extra service  charges    they dont need.     love it thank u all for  tellling the truth.

All the electric comes on the same wire. When the wire breaks... you have no electric.  The company that owns the wire will provide the same crappy service. The only advantage is you may save a few pennies per KWh by using one company over another.  I tried that... In the end... I didn't save enough to buy a gallon of gas.

I called SMECO to ask what this was- they repeated back what the scammers said they are. I asked SMECO "so then this is a scam then"
Smeco says - I cant answer that.
I asked smeco- can they really lower my bill

I say HOW

I hung up on both - I give out NO personal info including account numbers to ppl that called me first.

These people have Indian boiler room midgets working for them or did those midgets spoof their number like they do with all other companies? Either way they are plain dumb.

Received call according to caller ID from Startel LLC.   Same as many others have noted, they can lower my utility bill with Smeco just by giving them info from my latest bill.  Most of what this guy was saying did not make a whole lot of sense.  Of course he finished his speil with " I'll wait while you go get your utility bill with the info I need that's on it."  No thanks, I think we are dealing with a scam.

So why are the callers form your former employer such dicks?

So guys basically, I used to work for startel. its a small telemarketing company that works on behalf of Starion Energy who is a supplier of energy to the electric companies who were force to comply with the Deregulation Laws bc of your high energy rates. There are like 80+ energy brokers that have their own energy company. They buy the energy at a whole sale rate and that how you get a cheaper rate per KWH. There are two charges on your bill. A distribution charge which is what the Electric company makes there money off of and then theres a Generation Supply charge where the company just gives you any standard rate from who they set up to buy your energy from. They dont make money off of the generation rate that money goes to the energy supplier (energy broker) that they set you up with so they would care less what you pay for it bc theyre getting their money off of the distribution charge. I moved back to GA after working there for a couple of months. Your Rates in CT< OH< PA< MD< DC< NJ are high i.e. .09799 per KWH or even higher, but in ga we are not deregulated bc our rates are low. I think mine is about a .0235 KWH. So do your research before you screw yourself over. Your rate is under your bill under the Supple Energy Charge. TAke what Ive read and ask you ELECTRIC COMPANY yourself. and about the people hanging up, they will get caught bc the company has quality assurance all phone calls are recorded. They buy the list of number and if you do not want to recieve further call simply say Put me on your Do Not Call least and it takes 3 business to come in effect in their system. So maybe you need to be mad at the company that you arranged your number to be taking out the system for soliciting.

I received two calls from Startel, LLC.  However the phone numbers were 301-262-7741 and
410-379-0063.   There was conversation on the 410 area code # whereby the caller said that a bill had passed that would lower electric rates and thus asked for the account #...I told the person to call my sister's cell # as she is in charge of the electricity...he never called it.  On the 301 area code # the caller said nothing when I answered.

Same message about lowering my electric bill, Ok I said let's do it, go ahead, she asked is your zip code such and such, no I said it is not, then the f... idiot hung up, same with another representative, is this your address? no I said that is not my address, she hung up. What kind of manager has all his/her sales force working on an outdated database? and they want to work on my behalf to save me money??? NO, NO, NO

I just received this call.  The man said he wanted to get some information so that I could get a lower rate on my electric bill.  All he wanted was my name as it appears on my electric bill and my account number.  I was skeptical, and told him that I wasn't comfortable giving out my information.  He said "Ma'am, the only thing anyone can do with your account number is pay your bill."  Okay....so if the only thing someone can do with my account number is pay my bill, then why would he need it to LOWER my rate???

I realize that this may be perfectly legit, but there was no way I was taking that chance.
