Debt Collector
This is a scam- If they were true collector they would not harass or threaten people.

Debt Collector
This company is definitely a scam. They called my house today but left no message. I returned the call and asked them who they were and why they were calling. The guy (with very thick accent) claimed they were calling from the Legal Office of the Federal Investigation Department on behalf of Cash Advance. He asked for my husband, who I said was not available. He then proceeded to tell me all about this so called case they have pending against my husband. I just let him talk away and waited. He made all sorts of big statements, quoting supposed laws and codes and such, trying to sould as official as he possibly could. In truth, many people probably would or already have believed it and sent money, but I know for a fact that laws today forbid him giving out information about my husbands account to anyone, EVEN ME HIS WIFE, without his express permission. That was his first major mistake. His second was refusing to give me a physical address so that I could verify and validate the debt, which he is by law required to do if he is a legit company. Third was when he told me the only way they accept payment is via credit card or debit card. Any true debt, especially one being handled by a court or legal office, will accept a certified check or money order as payment, in fact most of those offices require it over paying by card or even cash. What the earlier post said about having to be notified by mail, sent court summons and such is completely correct too. All of this is major red flags for this scammer or any other debt collection company that calls. Even actual debt collection companies have to abide by collection laws and if they do not, they can be sued.
Please dont fall for the scammers and dont let the collection companies bully you either! You do have rights even if you owe debts. Always ask for phone number and physical address of a debt collector so that you can contact them by mail. You have the right to request that it be handled only by mail, to request verification and validation of the debt. You can refuse them permission to contact your job and even tell them to stop calling your house and that you will only deal with the debt via mail. They are not allowed to call your house before 8 am or after 9pm, nor on Sundays or Holidays, and they cant call you multiple times over and over, thats considered harrassment. Keep a log of their calls, even records on caller id if possible, and you can sue them for each and every time they do it. A good suggestion is to have your home phone forwarded to your cell. Most cell companies keep detailed logs of each call, even forwarded ones so you have proof of their calls. A lot of these jerks block their numbers, but it is possible to still get those numbers in a court case as well, because even if its blocked so you dont see it on your id, phone companies still have records of what number the call came from and it can be subpoenaed by the courts if needed.
Sorry, I know this post is long, I just get so ticked off by the scammers and vulture debt collectors taking advantage and using scare tactics to get money from people, especially since most of the people are like me, barly making it from day to day and possibly taking food from their kids mouth just to pay this crap. You do have rights, do a little research and dont let them push you around. debtorboards.com and other websites like it are great resources and you can find help there. Good luck to you all, if you are struggling with debts keep your chin up, unfortunately life happens and bad debts sometimes are unavoidable, but they dont make you a bad person so dont let them define who you are. Just do the best you can and keep your head high.

I received a call at my work place for one of our employee today.  They said that he should call as soon as possible.  I could barely understand them. When I ask where they were calling from he said the federal investigation department.

I got a all from these people and i can't even understand them. I have taken care of all my legal issues that I have had in the past and I know the my record is clean so they are so fake if they are supposed to be for real they would send a letter and not a phone call. I am a law student and I understand that what they are doing is wrong and it is a scam. If it was for real a lawyer for the so call company would send out a letter of demand not a phone call.

how can I get info n this company?  They are hard to understand when I'm trying to talk to them.  They want me to settle out of court or they have arrest warrant and I can loose my job, etc.  This seems so odd.  Thanks

I'm not the same anonymous who replied to larry but both anonymous and larry sound like shills for an extortion scam http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710 on this phone number. Lawyers use the US mail to send demand letters. Courts use the US mail to send summons. Neither will call you for payment. If you get called by a debt collector or a debt collector pretending to be a lawyer, be aware Section 809(a) says you have to get 5 items within 5 days of initial contact:
1. $amount of debt,
2. name of the current creditor (which may differ from the original creditor who might have sold your debt),
3. a statement that that debt will be assumed to be valid unless you dispute in writing within 30 days,
4. a statement that that if you do dispute in writing within 30 days, the collector must mail you written verification of the debt,
5. a statement that if you ask the collector in writing within 30 days, the collector must send you the name and address of the original creditor if it's different from the current creditor.
