I allowed something to access my harddrive, which I thought was an Acrobat update, but turned out to be a virus - seemed to wipe everything clean, my documents and photos and desktop all disappeared.  They when using the antivirus sweep on my computer, there was a message that to complete the clean I needed to buy "System Fix" for $80.  I figured what the heck, and did, and a few minutes later my whole desktop and files were restored.  Which I thought was awfully suspicious.  A day later I got a call from this number, and a man with an Indian accent said he heard from McAfee or Norton that I got a virus, and asked if I had a few minutes to fix it.  I thought it was suspicious and asked if he had a call back number.  He said it would take too long to get someone on the phone if I called back, so he would call later.  I got a call from that number about 7 more times in the next few days, and when I never picked up, they finally gave up.  But I'm afraid the virus is still on my computer and I don't know what to do about it!

I had a virus and out of no where, unsolicited, I received a call from this number only asking if I had a virus on my computer.  When I asked who they were and how they knew . . . he replied "I am sorry" and hung up.  I believe they are not here to help us.

I had a virus on my PC.  Tried to purchase software to fix the problem.  I put my info on the sheet to purchse the software,  I kept getting a 0007 error.  I used two different cards thinking it was a credit card problem.  The next day I received a phone call from a 415-800-5005 and missed the call...so I returned the call and left a message with in 2 minutes I got a call from 209-642-4483.  They were asking about an issue with my computer and they could fix it...fortunately I asked some questions which made them think also I told them I wasn't home but would be in half hour.  Have not heard back yet

Telemarketer
I fell for this a wile back. These dudes are P*** or Indian (the dot on the forhead type),
the create the worm that screwes up your PC. Must access your data by double-ckicking
your system. Then sell U a clean-up. Quite a buiss. plan U must aggree. So it fits into the
"SCAM" venue of things. I dumped thier system and put MS Security Essentials on the ol' grinder (recomended by Cust. Reports) which is "FREE" I might add. We all know FREE is
good. Not sure the CO. name as it seems to change, If U do call and get a femal just talk
real fast and use as much lingo slang as U can, U can hear her knickers bunch up, OK
ladies it works on the dudes to, just not as much fun. And yes the call every day, another
thing I found out is to turn the PC off when not in use, and if while using it slows down or
'sticks' I right away use the power button on the front of the CPU and shut down, wait a wile
and after start use MS SE scann and dump the files, works for me!! Good Luck Willie

Same thing happened to a friend of mine.   She had a virus and tried to fix by purchasing the software that was being advertised to fix the virus.   After she put in her card she realized it was a hoax.  She immediately cancelled the credit card.  She received a phone call from the 209 642 4483 phone number and he said he could see her virus on her computer.    He said he wanted to help her.

Called the owner of a laptop and claimed that it had a virus (called on her cell phone, she has no clue how they got it).  She went to a website and gave them remote access.  She also gave them her Visa info (ok, she is too trusting).  Her mother shut down her home network and took the laptop immediately upon hearing about this (also called the CC and had it all canceled).  The caller claimed to be with www.remotepccure.org.  Very little info on the web about this site, and most of it seems to be repetitive in blogs, like one person cutting and pasting under different names the same glowing review.

The mother brought me the PC and asked me to look it over.  I have not found anything yet (beyond the junk that a college girl would have on her laptop).  It appears they installed Trend Micro's AV with a one year license, so they may be somewhat legitimate.

I am hoping they are only a telemarketing firm that mass calls to sucker people into paying for their computer services.  Reformating and reinstalling OS to be sure.

Jason, you better check your credit cards because this is a total scam.  They plant malware on the web and make it look like Microsoft is telling you to purchase "Windows Defender" virus protection.  Then they steal your credit card info.
