Someone called me from this number and said that I had charges pending against my social security number but didn't state why or how.  He said that he was a sheriff and that the police were coming to my job to take my manager and me to the local courthouse.  He then said that I would have to pay $2500.  I really thought this was a joke because it didn't make since.  But they had called my work number and cell number several times.  I called my local phone company to trace the calls and they said they were frrom an automated system.

So I called the number the next day and a women with an west indian accent answered the phone.  When I asked her for the name of the company, she wanted to know my name and number.  Since I wouldn't provide her with that information she hung up by said thanks for calling crimestoppers.  I know this was some kind of scam.

If anyone has experienced this type of call please let me know what you did to resolve it.

This IS NOT just happening in Kansas! Both me and one of my friends at work have both gotten these calls while AT WORK! Same exact thing has been happening to us!

I am planning on filing a complaint with the listed bureau and advising her to do the same. We both are VERY lucky we didnt get fired either time because the one guy that called me, called repeatedly (about 10 times in a row after being hung up on) and threatened my manager also.

The same number called me at work and stated that they were calling from a law office, and if i didn't give them my information that I would be arrested tomorrow. This happened 2 months ago, from a different number and calling from RC Trucking.  That is a scam also!! I have never taken out a payday loan, and I don't buy much stuff off the internet. don't give them any kind of information.

I also received a call this afternoon from the same company threatening to have me arrested for a debt of $300 I failed to pay.  The man call on both my cell and work number and was very abrasive and rude and yelling at me.  He told me to either settle the debt of some payday loan over the phone or else I would be taken into custody.  He appeared to be confused and all over the place in his speech.  He than hung up on me after telling me that he does not have time to continue discussing this issue and that I should could back within 30 minutes ONLY if I willing to settle this debt.  I have never borrowed anything from them and I am extremely upset.  He old told me that he would be contacting my Employer to advise them that I committed some type of fraud.

Bryttany-

THIS IS A SCAM!!!! I got the same threatening phone calls today at both my work and on my cell phone. I kept the guy on the phone for about 15 minutes trying get more information. He said they were a law firm but refused to give me the name. He had a very thick accent and I could barely understand him. He would yell at me when I would not copperate and disclose information to me. He said that I had taken out a $400.00 payday loan in 2009 and never re-paid-which I too have NEVER taken out a payday loan. He said if I did not settle this debt with him today (It would have cost me $600.00) then I would be "removed from my residence or place of work" on monday by 11 am and taken immediately to court where my DL would be immediately suspended and my SSN would be "blackmarked" causing me to loose my job and be kicked out of my house and I would never regain uneployment. I immediately called my local PD and reported it. They took a report and advised me to call the credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on my SSN and to also change my bank account information. Once I told the guy on the phone that I would be calling the police myself to verfiy that I am "wanted" he hung up and I have not had a call since. They state they are located in Los Angeles and the area code is a CA area code, however, most of these calls are not actually originating in the US. Hope that helps. I would file a police report just because you can never be too careful.

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

I'm still unsure about who this number is-- but they left a message about being 'legal offices' and saying that if I did not respond to the phone call that I would be arrested; so I keep calling, and everythime I ask for the woman who left the message they hang up on me, or tell me that I will be taken into custody on Monday for an unpaid loan (I've NEVER taken out a loan-- ever.).
