Received a call similar to Rob (11/27 entry).  However, after I got their phone number and asked where they were (they told me Newark and area code 210 is near San Antonio, Texas), I told them that I did not need them to help me and I hung up.  BTW, Newark, NJ would be area code 201.  Report your calls to the FCC also (I did)!  Their web site is http://www.fcc.gov/complaints - I have seen a few convictions as a result of people's reports!

Same thing happened to me today. Showed up as an unknown caller. When I asked for a contact # they gave me a 210 number. They were much too insistent I fix my computer. They also wanted to know when I would be calling back and when I would be on my computer. Please don't fall for this. I can only imagine what kind of information they will steal!

Prank Call
Callers with heavy India dialect call to say they are from Microsoft and that your computer in infected. They have you write down a code they say specifically identifies your computer as the one that you originally used to register with them (Microsoft). If you question that, they show you on your computer how to find that "unique" identifying code - to show you it matches the Microsoft records. If you believe them, they then ask you to go to a 3rd-party site (in this case Alpemix.com) to download a program that gives them the ability to access your computer. DO NOT DO THAT. HANG UP. The unique identifer they gave you is the number that will come up n your computer but it is exactly the same number in EVERYBODY'S computer and is NOT a unique identifier for you at all. They will also try take you to your computer's Event Viewer to show you error messages that "prove" that a trojan is corrupting your files. The error messages shown there are NORMAL for EVERY windows computer! It is just the normal info and error messages your computer routinely logs to note all the "messy" programs and proceesses that normally bump into each other. AGAIN, HANG UP and do not download anything!!

A guy calls my home, says his name is Ron Smith, and he's calling about our windows.  My wife, knowing we're in the process of changing them, relays the message so I can call him back.  We're in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and I ain't about to call back a number in San Antonio, Texas regarding my windows dummy Ron!
