My order is a little backwards.  Run the antivirus and antimalware before you go changing passwords.  If you don't want to take chances, go to a respected IT company and pay to have them do it, as stated below.

You can either (1) Use your computer as a boat anchor. (2) Reinstall the OS, if you have the original disks (3) Take it to a REAL brick & mortar computer repair shop & have them purge the spyware, ransomware, virus', keyloggers & trojans that now inhabit your computer. DO NOT use this computer for banking, & if you do, contact your bank NOW! & tell them what's happened.

As an IT professional, I can advise you to do a few things.  One, either cancel or keep a close watch on all your credit card and banking information.  Two, change all of your passwords to every account you have, including your computer password.  All of this information could have been taken off the computer.  Three, hopefully you have a good antivirus like McAfee or Norton, run a rull system scan (this may take an hour or more).  Four, Malwarebytes has a very good malware detection program and it's free.  Download and run it.  Finally, never let anyone in your computer unless you know them or their business and you initiated the contact.  Hopefully nothing has been stolen off your computer and they just got a payment for their "services", but I wouldn't trust it.

We suspected a scam from 855-384-9273.  I called that number from my cell and went into a help line loop.  Did not leave a message but they called me back the next day from this 212 number.
Heavy Indian accents and very pushy.

They have called my house and cell number several times. Last night I ask them to remove my number from their call list and he told me to "shut the f*** up" I said excuse me and then he yelled it again. Wish I knew how to report them.

Just called - he knew my name. I immediately suspected a scam and said so, and told him that I have not had a Windows PC for about 8 years, at which point he hung up.

This # has been calling me for days and wouldn't respond to my answers.  I assume some kind of political call coming from the 212 area code.  Tonight they responded when I answered, a female voice with heavy accent wanting to talk with me about my computer.  I decided to play along so asked her what was wrong with it and she asked if I were sitting in front of it.  I said "you're crazy!' and hung up..  Then I tried to call them back just to see what I would get and of course "the number is no longer in service".

Told me I had  a virus and malware that I couldn't see but they would find it and correct it for me. I asked her name and told her I worked for a government taskforce on computer fraud and scams, asked for name again, had the nerve to hang up on me. Go figure

Got a phone call from this number a few minutes ago.  Guy with heavy accent told me he needs to help me correct some major security problems on my computer.  He asked it was sitting at my computer and I said Yes.  Then he told me I should be on the desktop and asked if I could see all the icons there.  I told him yes and then asked who he was exactly and what company he was working for.  He told me B something I couldn't understand.  I asked how he would know that MY computer had any problems.  He told me because he's calling everybody that has Windows because there are problems that everybody with Windows has.  Then he started asking me what key was next to my Ctrl key and something else I couldn't understand due to his accent.  After asking him to repeat himself a few times I decided this call was making me very uncomfortable and so I hung up.  Then they tried to call back and I didn't answer.

Then I decided to Google the telephone number on my caller ID and found these entries.  I think what makes the most sense to me is the entry about from Mike in MD in reply to Ann.  I am now going to report this number to the Do Not call list and feel bad for those that fall for this crap when they get this same call.

They said "hello....hello" and hung up on my answering machine. As you know the call came from New York and some of you may know that One Direction (biggest boy and in the world) is also staying in New York at the moment. The accent of the caller sounded Irish and Niall Horan in one direction is Irish. The people in the background sounded very British. So as my theory, I think it was Niall Horan calling me because he wants a piece if this a**. In conclusion, It. Was. The. Niall. Horan.

Actually they will try to get you to run event viewer and convince you all those harmless warning and error messages indicate there are serious problems with your computer. They will also show you a whole lot of stopped programs claiming this is more indication of viruses or malware when again this is normal for any Windows system.  Once they have convinced you how serious a problem you have they will direct you to a website which will permit remote access to your computer.  Once connected they will be able to quickly copy everything off your hard drive so even if you refuse to allow them to "fix" your problems and pay them they will be able to find any personal information including all logins and passwords and credit card numbers that were on your computer. They will also most likely install their own malware that will give them access anytime you go online.  It's all a big scam preying on naive computer users using the names "Windows" or "Microsoft" to gain trust.

Just got the same thing - very staticy and thick accent

Telling me "my computer has all sorts of errors and is slowing down and will crash"

I shined him on for 5 minutes - him asking a variety of questions and me answering in gibberish.   If not for the fact that I HATE spam calls it would have been more amusing
