Received the same call (from India) saying they were "Windows Department".  I asked three times if they worked for Microsoft, and they said yes.  When I was directed to non-Microsoft website, I ended the call, and found this scam-alert.  Thanks.

I also got a call and the man said his name was John Jones and he had a thick India accent.  I told him I was gonna call back to technical support so I could verify that the call was real.  Glad I shut down the computer when I did.  After I rebooted the computer I searched the phone number and found other peoples story about it being a scam.  He actually called me back about 10 minutes later and wanted to know what I was waiting for to call him back and that I needed to fix my computer now.  I said to him that I saw on the internet that this was a scam and he told me to hang up and call the number back and he could prove it was not a scam.  Sorry but I did not buy it and told him it was a scam and he got mad and told me to go F**k myself.  Guess I got the last laugh knowing they were not getting over on me.

Now that I am retired, I have unlimited time to mess with these jokers.  I asked a million questions, called the "verification number" (above), said I had to consult my "computer teacher",said "Ricky Parker" was not a name than matched the accent, got him talking about India, told him In knew his real last name meant "lion", knowing about half of India has that name, asked why they had "upgrade" in their name if they were not trying, in fact, to sell me an upgrade.  Finally "Steve" got so frustrated HE hung up on ME. I had always heard not to give out any info unless I initiated the call......was not planning to do that anyway.

I got a call from this number and it was a man named "Alex" with an Indian accent.  He tried to convince me there were all kind if problems on my computer having to deal with windows. I told him my brother has a masters in computer operations from a prestigious school and that he takes care of any issues I have. Alex told me he was a certified Microsoft technician and he knew more and only he could help me. I think there should be some type of legal action taken to stop these people. They are not from this country and this could be a form of terrorism! They are obviously doing this out of some type of hatred against Americans or else they'd be scamming their own people!

The same thing happened to me, just like Henry Gordon.  The only difference is that no amount of money was spoken about.  I turned off the Internet connection after a little less time than Henry and the man called back.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what was done?  Were files copied, etc.?

I got a call from 213-455-3317 saying that could save my computer from all of the errors and viruses, and offer future protection for a one time cost of $149 or $199.  They got into my computer claiming that the represented Microsoft.  They showed me an error page in my computer.  I told him (foreign accent) that I needed to research them further before committing to anything.  However, I mistakenly left my computer on for over 30 minutes while they went thru it.  I am afraid that they may have stolen my identy.  This appears to be a hoax.

I received  a telephone call with ID BHN Cust Svc from 'Jack Smith' representing service providers for Windows 7 using 24hrsupport.com. My many installation errors were about to corrupt my computer and $199.00 worth of software would keep it safe forever.  I  regret not hanging up - usually I don't pick up a strange # but this time he called twice within the hour and I weakened.  Thanks for listening

We have been getting these calls for some time now and I usually tell them, hang on a minute you need to talk to my husband, then I put down the phone and wait until they hang up.  But today my husband was home, heard me say that and picked up the phone.  I made him understand that it was a scam call and when he got it he strung the poor fellow out in talking with him for over 20 minutes.  He was given the above number and a fake name.  No interest to call him back, but great fun to play with the guy.

If you have the time challenge your imagination, go for it - but don't let them get close to your computer - not even remotely.

Just got a call from "Jack". He kept saying he had to fix my computer. He wouldn't answer any of my questions. He said he was from California, he had a heavy accent (India). I asked  him how he got my phone number, he repeated my phone number.
I  hung up on him.

Received call saying they were from Microsoft Windows and because I had been receiving so many arrow messages, my computer was infected and needed to be cleaned. I am not as bright as the rest of you and let them start after a few questions including their phone number. The person I spoke to was George Morris (Really!!!) and he spoke English with an accent from India. I did a reverse look-pu on the phone number and saw they were telemarketers. So I called Microsoft who said they are not affiliated. I immediatedly stopped the process with "George" by turning off my computer and asked Microsoft to clean the computer and remove any thing George's group installed - both visible and invisible. The person I spoke with at Microsoft said because they were in the scanning mode they probably did not download anything yet. But I am not sure about that.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.
