Verizon says it won't sell your number and maybe that's true.  However, it doesn't really matter what Verizon's policy is because anyone you call that uses another cell phone company - well you just gave your cell phone number to that company and that company may be selling numbers.

Cell phone companies make money by selling and also, as w/Verizon, you can block only 5 numbers for 90 days without charge - if you want to block up to 20 numbers permanently you can pay (boo!) a monthly fee. I block 5 and keep record and renew the block a day prior to the expiration. Problem is you need to remove the numbers, sign off then on again and add the numbers back to get your new 90 day expiration date. Hassle free - NOT.

My policy is to NEVER answer any call that doesn't call out a name in my address book (get a phone that speaks the callers name) - or a number I don't recognize as a friendly.  I'll return calls provided it's someone I want to talk to. The only time I go off this policy is when we have an emergency underway and I give those people my cell number and I'd expect calls from Drs. etc who wouldn't be in my address book. Otherwise I never give out my cell number to just anyone (Businesses always get just my home number- I say NO when they ask for an alternate number.

Repeat spammers numbers are listed in my contacts as "JUNK1", 2, 3 etc (can list 5 numbers per contact!) and I set those at NO RING.

Yes, it's a pain and maybe when they read these posts they laugh - but I'm still not answering their calls and I've heard they only get paid if someone picks up - so I laugh at their fruitless labor.

Also, it IS a major election season (seems it's ALWAYS an election season!).  I always vote - but I hate and won't answer political calls even from my preferred party or candidate.

Actually, I was wrong about this being a political call.  It comes under the guise of a political survey but is, in reality, a telemarketing scam.  Totally illegal according to the recent FCC ruling but what can we do?  The FCC doesn't really have any teeth.  It only makes rulings and hopes that most people will abide by them.  Good luck, guys (I guess only someone from California would use that kind of term..."guys").

To all the people thinking carriers are selling your numbers..... They're not. Phone numbers are cycles through. They don't even wait 6 months like they used to. You may have only had the number for a short while but someone else had it before you and they most likely registered it somewhere.

Sorry Jenna but NO Verizon is not selling numbers. Computers dial the numbers in sequence. They can dial thousands of numbers and save the ones that are valid.

Political Call
You can't block numbers to a cell phone; only on land line phones.  Get a Digitone call blocker for your land line phone.  It's worth the $100 if you're plagued with crank calls on your land line.

if you have a smart phone, you can download a free app that will let you block these calls.
if you dont, save the number as a contact, and make it a "no ring" contact...
either way, they won't bother you again.

Got a call from 503-468-5198 - no message left.  My cell didn't ring - Set my default ring to silent and went and put a ring on each of my contacts.  Now my phone only rings when someone I know  calls.  Doesn't work for the "vibrate" mode though.  Took a little while to do, but it's nice not having the phone ringing.  Also took off my "reminder" sound for missed calls.  I just check my phone regulary to see if I've missed something.  Also turn my default ring back on when I'm expecting a call from someone not in my contacts.

I don't believe Verizon is selling your cell phone number. These are usually computer generated calls and the computer just puts in numbers and just adds "1" to the number it called previously. Like 111-111-1111 then 111-111-1112, 111-111-1113, etc.

The number that shows up when they call is not necessarily the number they are calling from. With all the advancements in computers and VOIP, these people can be calling from anywhere in the world and make it look like the number is from Oregon, Texas, Connecticut, Florida, etc.

This number just called me (5:55 pm in Los Angeles) on my landline phone.  I have AT&T.  I let it go to voicemail but there was no message left.

I appreciate others leaving messages so now I have a clue what this call is about.

Just received a call from 503-468-5198. Have been getting a lot of junk calls these days varying from political survey/cruise to unknown cause and content.  I refuse to answer any call that I don't recognize.  I didn't even answer a call from my brother on his new cell that only ID'ed him as Texas.
Complaints to the DNC list are useless because spoofed numbers are not traceable.

Just received one at 12:47pm PST today (March 28) on Verizon carrier.  Have been getting a lot from different #'s, all on Verizon.  Also have Sprint acct and never get one on it.  I've never answered any unknown calls but if I get more than 3 calls from a certain # I've been reporting to the FCC via their online complaint form.

You're absolutely right about Verizon selling us out.  I opened a Sprint acct in Oct but still have the Verizon acct till it expires.  I'm only getting it on my Verizon phone.  I've gotten several different numbers calling in on that phone and when I look them up, they're all numbers that are calling others, too, and Verizon keeps popping up as their carriers.  If I get more than 3 I've been reporting them to the FCC, they have an online complaint form you can fill out.  I just received the 503 call today (march 28) @ 12:47 pm PST

They don't need to sell your number. They use a call list by area code and prefix from 0000 to 9999. Each automatic dialer uses one prefix, and they completely blanket the area code. They likely note the numbers which are "active" as opposed to disconnected however.

My Advise to one and all. I have a T Mobil phone that has a call blocking feature.
Those that have some other cell phone company should make a request that they give you blocking or you and every one else will just have to move to T mobil that does.
