Debt Collector
First, a man called on Friday afternoon, both my office and my cell numbers, claiming that he would be serving me with papers for check fraud. I'm not sure where he pulled that one from, but I don't actually owe any money. He told me if he didn't hear from me, he would be coming with a county sheriff, gave me a phony docket number, and wished me good luck. The "good luck," by the way, is the classic tell of a scam-artist. Americans, Pakistanis, Kenyans and in between wish you "good luck" to try to force you to act. It's a way to get around the non-threatening language (tone doesn't count if you don't record it.) I got a call this morning, again on both my office and cell numbers, from a woman, claiming to be from a law firm with this 214... number as her direct number. I called and got the name of Susan Hellmann (not sure of the exact spelling.) She claims to be an attorney, and provided a different docket number, claiming the issue would be taken to court, and she wanted to get "my side of the story first." When she called my cell-phone, she pretended to be calling a number for the Maine authorities, but when she called my office number, she directed her message to me in that "I'm not really threatening you, but I'm going to take you to court way." These things are driven by payday loan applications. These companies can pull your financial information, insofar as they can find out with whom you bank, your social security number, etc., but by debtor/debtee law, they are immediately required to provide written documentation to you regarding your loan, the date thereof, and a separate of debt due/interest due. Don't fold to these people! They will threaten people who don't know better, which is most people, and get hold of your financial information (account information which they don't otherwise have.) Ignore the trolls, too, on this thread, who claim they actually owed the debt and paid it, and aren't they upstanding citizens. This is a scam from beginning to end.

I got this too and was trying to reach a hr person in my office.  I gave the name and said they keep calling and no one answered.  Then I said how come you keep calling my line and then told me I was the one who owed a debt and didnt want to repay a loan.  I said I didnt receive anything in the mail or calls.
So I had made a small payment and was to make the remainder of the balance yesterday.   I called this person but didnt answer his line to make a payment.  I said I have a payment but if you dont want it obviously you are a joke.
