He began by talking with my husband and stating Apple had found malware in my Mac. My husband allowed remote access to the MAC. How do I make sure nothing has been hacked?

When I came to the phone, the caller today was insistent my version of Microsoft Word for Mac was no longer supported by Apple and company policy required a refund. He gave me a date of a purchase and dollar amount, using the Apple store. He was insistent that I must take back my money but refused to give me a phone number or website for further verification. When i said I never got anything in the mail from Apple like the disk he said they sent, he told me I must have given them the wrong address - "not their fault."

What steps do I take to protect my computer once it's been given remote access to a stranger?

Friend of mine got a call from these blokes. Told them they had called the RCMP 3rd Technical Support Division (completely ficticious) and told them to explain what was wrong so they could fix it as they were professional IT guys.

Dudes hung up immediately.

I got them to stop calling by convincing them I lived alone and telling them that I am (and I am) a licensed computer technician. After poking holes in their 'reported issues' a bunch of times I told them I didn't care who they were and wasn't going to report them but to stop calling me.

And they stopped calling me.

Received call from above number stating they were from Microsoft tech support.  Caller was foreigner with heavy accent probably from India or Nigeria.  Said I had a virus that would damage my database info.  Wanted me to down load a program to remotely access my computer and fix the damage it was causing. ("www.ammyy.com" a remote access program). Don't do it.  They use this access to find any Bank information, passwords, social security information, saving accounts or any financial info in order to gain access and transfer your funds somewhere else.  If you are doing online banking or bill pay they could edit this and you'll be paying them. This is a huge scam. Just ask them for there Microsoft ID number,  They will hang up....

Just received a call from this number.  A woman with an India accent asked for me by name and was claiming she was from Microsoft and they had been receiving reports that my computer was crashing over the past 2 weeks and she wanted to provide support.  She said as a Microsoft customer, I was entitled to this support.  She asked me to go to my computer to verify my IP address.  I told her there were too many scams over the phone and she said it was understandable, but if I went to my computer she would give me my IP number and if it matched we could proceed and if it didn't I could hang up on her.  I told her I could not access my computer at this time and she said she would call back again later.  My husband later verified that he had received a similar call just the day before.  We both felt it was very much an attempt to scam me and now after reading what others have posted on here there is no doubt.

This company called my dying fathers phone and I answered.  They asked for my father by name and when I asked who they were they would not tell me.  I asked again and the guy said "don't give me any more b***s***".  I told him I was going to report he and his number and he hung up.

What type of company scams old dying men?

The same thing happened this morning. The caller indicated he worked for Microsoft and wanted me to access my computer. When i told him to send me an email or a letter, he went off on a tirade of foul language and heavy breathing. Needless to say, I let him go for about 5 minutes while I made my coffee and he eventually hung up.

Got a call from this number a few moments ago.
I answered and immediately hung up ... then, (since my call blocking list is full) I added their number to my "selective call forwarding" list.

If they call again they will automatically be forwarded to another number. THAT number is from another phone scammer that kept calling me. I figure if these guys want to pester someone ... they might as well pester each other.

Prank Call
The guy said my computer has issues and he is from microsoft.  I pretended to panic and explain that my computer is a company computer.  "Corporate will be pissed!"  I asked him for his info so my company's tech support could call him.  He said he'd call back.  I actually work in technology and recognized the phone system they use.  It is called Asterisk.  If you hit # when you call them, you can try to guess their voicemail PIN!

I got a call from this number this morning.  When they said it was in reference to my computer, I told them I did not have one.  They said, "You no have computer?".  I said "NO".  She was puzzled and hung up.  If they call back again, I'll mess with them some more.

I got a call today kind of like Kathy B's.  They were getting errors from my new computer and it went directly to them instead of to me.  I told them I wasn't having any trouble and that made no sense.  I told them they could leave me a number and my husband could call them back.  They said there was no time for that.  My computer would crash before that would happen.  I kept telling him I didn't understand and that it didn't make sense.  He was getting very frustrated and saying the same thing over and over after every question I had.  We never got to what he was even calling for and trying to sell me.  I finally said this is how is it going to be, I am not going to fix my computer.  If it crashes, then I will deal with it then.  They can give me a number and my husband will call them back.  Well, that made them hang up on me.  So, hopefully they won't mess with me again.

I received a call from the same phone number.  It was a woman with a strong accent... maybe middle eastern.  I think she said she was with Windows... after a couple of minutes, I asked if she was with Microsoft, and she said yes.  She said she called because she received a report from my computer that the computer had been infected by viruses.  She had me hold down the Windows key and hit the letter r, which opened the Run dialog box.  She had me type 'inf' and click the OK button.  She said these files are all infections.  I know that these are the files that are supposed to be on the computer, so I pushed her to tell me which one was the infection.  She said they all were infections, including... I asked if the .NETFramework folder was an infection, and she said yes.  She doesn't know anything about computers.  I think she is just reading a script.  She kept telling me that my computer would continue to be infected if I didn't do what she told me to do.  I should have found out what she was going to have me do, but, I got bored and told her she was obviously trying to scam me.  She insisted the my computer would become even more infected.  I hung up after going back and forth a few more times.

Stated they were calling from "Windows" about errors that had been sent to them from my computer.  "Bad things" had gotten into my computer when I was online and would eventually play havoc with my computer if I didn't do something about it.  He then directed me to a website, www.ammyy.com" which is Ammyy Admin, which offers free remote desktop access.  The idea was that he would transfer me to his technical support department and they would access my computer remotely to correct all these errors.

I tried to find out what company this man was with.  All he would say was they worked for "Windows" correcting these problems for customers.  I said I thought the call was a scam.  Finally he offered me a second phone number (804-435-5332) where I could call and verify who they were.  I was to call this number between 6:00pm - 7:00pm.

I don't know for sure what this is all about.  But it's not about Windows and I'm sure not going to give remote access of my computer to just anyone who calls and says they're working for "Windows!"

Stated they were calling from "Windows" about errors that had been sent to them from my computer.  He asked me to do a few things on my computer.  First we went to my computer event viewer where he asked me to scroll through the Application events and count the number of warnings and errors.  These, he said, were all the bad things that have "gotten into my computer from being on the internet."  These "bad things" would eventually play havoc with my computer if I didn't do something about it.  But no worry because that's why they were calling.  He then directed me to a website, www.ammyy.com" which is Ammyy Admin, which offers free remote desktop access.  The idea was that he would transfer me to his technical support department and they would access my computer remotely to correct all these errors.  BIG PROBLEM!

First of all, the warnings and errors he had me count were application errors that had nothing to do with "bad things from the internet."  I tried to find out what company this man was with.  All he would say was they worked for "Windows" correcting these problems for customers.  Initially when he phoned, he said they had received remote notice from my computer with these errors.  I asked the dates for those.  Again, he was very vague and said, "It happened in June."  Well, there are lots of days in June!  Could he give me a date?  No, that would take way too long.  The main thing I wanted to know was how did they get my phone number?  I just did a Windows 7 clean install on my computer two weeks ago and have not yet registered my copy of Windows.  He said these matters are so urgent that they have people in local areas who look the phone number so they can call and get things straightened out.  I DON'T THINK SO.

Finally he offered to give me a second phone number (804-435-5332) where I could call and verify who they were.  I was to call this evening between 6:00pm - 7:00pm.  Don't think I will.  I saw two other reports online for this 252-659-2258 number.  One said they were trying to sell some type of warranty.  The other mentioned they said they were calling from "Apple."

I don't know for sure what this is all about.  But I'm not going to give remote access of my computer to just anyone who calls and says they're working for "Windows!"

PS: This man did have a thick Indian accent, but was relatively easy to understand.

Caller stated that he was from Apple and that Apple has been receiving messages that my computer has a virus. Wanted me to go on the internet to either www.teamviewer or www.support.me. I told him I did not believe he was from Apple and hung up on him. I checked the web addresses he wanted me to go to. There is software here that when downloaded allows someone remote access to your computer. Called Apple they said they will NEVER call you. If there are updates they will let you know via apple email or automatic apple update.... BEWARE
