Prank Call
I just received a call from this number. Caller had heavy East Indian accent and pretended to be computer support, tried to get me to turn on my computer to allow them access.

I told him we didn't have a computer and he hung up;)

I answered the call @ 9:40 AM (On a Saturday!) He asked for me by NAME and when I asked who was calling, he claimed to be computer support, then asked about my computer and said that it had an infection and went on about it. He had a polite Indian accent. I told him 'I don't believe you, this is a SCAM' and he hung up.

Similar to the reports here: I answered the call at 9:06 pm - the time of the call was already a red flag. What legitimate business calls a residence so late?  The caller with an Indian accent was hard to hear because of the background noise of a call center.  The voice sounded like a female and I think she said her name was Shirley.  She claimed to be from "computer support" but couldn't answer any of my questions - like what company she was calling from and why she was calling.   She finally hung up when I said "you made a mistake; you called the wrong number."  Looking on the caller ID, I see she called earlier in the evening when we were out. Should this also be reported to local police or the newspaper so they can warn others?

Caller asked for the owner of this home by name. I have no idea how he got her name. I asked him "concerning what?". He hung up. He had an accent that reminded me of India.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

Caller had heavy East Indian accent.  Wanted me to turn on my computer and guide me thru the necessary steps to clean up an infection that my computer had.  I told him I couldn't do that because I wasn't sure who he was.  Said he was hired by Microsoft to do this.  I told him I needed more identification.  He wanted me to follow his directions to find my computer id information so he could prove he was legit.  I told him, "No, I can't do that" and asked him to give me the name of his company and their phone number.  He had to repeat the name several times.  Said it was "Virtual PC Support Company" and started telling me a long, long phone number beginning with 80.  I told him to call me back later.  He never did.  Seemed to be unhappy that I didn't trust him.  Sorry!

Caller tells me to turn on my computer which has an infection so he could guide me thru to remove the  computer infection for free.  Told him I had someone tending to this problem who is not going to charge me.  I hung up.  Caller had a heavy East Indian accent gave me the company name, had him repeat it twice, still could not understand what he said.  Claimed to be from a local company.

Called late.  Voice unfamiliar and connection sounded fuzzy.  When told the person he was asking for was not home and did he want to leave a message--he hung up without saying anything more.  Didn't sound right from the get go.

Called me and pretended to be computer support, tried to get me to turn on my computer to allow them in.  Interesting phone call, I said "Nice try" and he was very polite and hung up since obviously I wasn't going to fall for that one.
