An Indian man with The Technical Department of Windows called me a few days ago (June 14/2012) and said my computer was full of errors and malware and he would help me fix my computer for free. I asked how he knew my computer had malware and he acted like he didn't understand my dumb question. I asked if he was from Microsoft. First he deflected the comment and then said No. I played along... I asked his phone number. After much confusion, he gave me: 315-277-2288. He then sent me to his website where a photo showed about 5 people sitting in a line looking at computers. Only one Indian man sat in the middle. He said that was him. I asked his name. After much fumbling, he said his name was James Thomson. I asked him to spell Thomson, which took some time. I didn't realize that "James Thomson" was an Indian name (ha, ha). I asked where his company was located--he said Brooklyn, NY. I asked what this free service was going to cost me. He said Nothing. I said, But on your website it says this is a subscription. He pretended that I had lost my mind. Then he said in order to fix my computer problems, I had to download a file that would help us communicate better. It had an .exe ending. I told him I would not download an .exe file from an unknown source. Exasperated with me, he insisted it was safe and would not harm my computer. At which point I was exhausted and needed a Lindsey Lohan nap, and said goodbye. Please don't call paramedics.

Steve I love your aggressive "WAKE UP" You are welcome to come slap me.. cause I just fell for it for quite a while and now looking into you fine people trying to fix it. I feel like a dumbass been working online for yrs and went for this BS. He Stated after I asked how'd you get my number/info he said I registered it all when I bought the computer and I do believe I did register, so I continued asking ok if you can see my registration info WHAT IS MY NAME.... he couldn't answer, I said where do I live, he couldn't answer and yes got angry sounding, as he thought he had me.. GUESS WHAT HE EFFIN DID... he pulled up sites claiming they were his, I said I can pull up playboy and claim I work for them, same with Victoria's secret just cause I can pull it up doesn't mean I work there.. he began to get annoyed and I repeatedly asked for my info I had used to 'register' Couldn't give it, finally ...Guess what he did!?  You're gonna love this... He opened my photos and found a photo of me sitting on my husbands lap at a BBQ and  he double clicked blew it up I said yes, he said see I know who you are........ Um well needless to say I asked him to relequish his ability to control my computer he said he did, he then gave me this number and said call me when you computer crashes it's a miracle with this much problems it's still running... umm ok... we hang up.. I call my hubby to whine like a baby... sitting still in front of my computer I looked up pages were opening, my mouse moving and he click an icon of chase bank.... user id I wrote F off .... he red x out and reloaded I wrote loser he red x out reopened.. so he knew I was aware and he was playing a effin game with me.... while this is going on of course I called my back and changed info over the phone.... now to surf the net to find how to fix the issue...

i've been doing computers since the 80s so I thought I would play along.  He got really mad when I told him he wasn't a system engineer with Microsoft because he thought deleting messages in the application event viewer would delete the viruses!!!!  He eventually hung up on me.

People!!!  Wake up!!! there are people out to get you!!!!

use a different PC to make all the password changes as he probably installed a key-logger in your PC already and will capture everything.  Reformat the PC if possible, or at the very least get a reputable antivirus and run full scans on your PC.

Prank Call
Got the same call, they tried to get me to download a program to give them remote control over my computer.  I declined and contacted Microsoft via their Chat suuport.  Microsoft confirmed that this was a scam and directed me to the link http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx that has general information on bogus telephone contacts.  I did not believe that Microsoft did business in this manner, and was glad to have that thought confirmed.

It is a scam!

I got  call from the same number and he said that he was from Microsoft windows support and that he had received reports from my computer about errors.  He also had a thick Indian or Middle Eastern accent.  He started walking me through a lookup through my computer management files.  He wanted me to delete a bunch of files ... all error and warning files.  He said this was a sign of a virus.

While it makes sense that these files may have a problem, I know that Microsoft doesn't call people on the telephone.  They don't even have my number.  This is surely a scam!  He made the call at 3:30pm Central time on a Saturday.

Scam Alert!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!  Scam!

Called to say that he was from Microsoft Windows and that they had received an error report and they were calling to follow up.  I stated I had been having computer problems for about two weeks and he, of course in heavily accented english, said he was there to help.  Gave him complete access to my computer, and I have to admit it works faster now.  However in the middle of the night I woke up knowing I had been scammed and now, at the very least must change all of my passwords, and probably banking accounts.
