I just got a BS call like this at home and work from a place called Unified Processing Group from this same number on 1/28/13. A lady named Ms. Spacek called and threatened me with allegations of fraud and legal action on a debt if I did not call her back that day. I called from my work phone after hours and the voicemail was some unprofessional, rude sounding dude who said to leave a name and contact number.

They both sounded really shady and bogus. I never respond to people who call me out of nowhere and then threatened legal action. Ever. They are scam artists. Plain and simple. If you do talk to them demand to see the debt in writing with all of the perinent information including original name and address of creditor, debt amount and whether or not that company was authorized to collect on the creditors behalf. If they can't or won't do that then they are full of s***! Plain and simple. They can't arrest you for a defaulted debt.

Don't fall for their BS!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

It's a scam. You CANNOT be arrested for a debt, it's a CIVIL matter, not a CRIMINAL matter.

I received a phone call from this number on the evening of December 11, 2012.  Supposedly it was from a David Cohen from some collection company. He claimed that he had paperwork regarding a case pending against me in the State of Connecticut regarding check fraud.  I supposedly owed the hospital credit union (where I used to work) for a bad check.  However, I already settled that debt last year.  I also received a call from someone in Florida trying this same scam.  This man said I was going to be arrested if I didn't come up with the money (the man who called from Florida said the same thing).  When I looked up the Florida man's number, I saw at least 10 other complaints from other people who'd received calls from him with the same scam: they owed money from a payday loan and would be arrested if they didn't come up with the money. This latest person(David Cohen) was calling from Indiana; I looked up the number!
 When I tried to tell this "Cohen" person that I'd gone through the same thing earlier in the year from the guy in florida, he repeatedly interrupted me and threatened me with sheriff's arrest, then said "good luck" and hung up.

Someone named David Cohen called me from this number stating there was a case pending against me for check fraud and that the sheriffs were coming to arrest me.  When I tried to tell them that someone from the State of FLorida tried calling me about the same thing, and that he also threatened that I was going to be arrested unless I came up with $1200 dollars, the man cut me off and wouldn't let me finish my statement.  Then he threatened to send the sheriff's to my home tonight to arrest me.
