I received a call from a man, he was very humble. Said he was my cousin.  He asked me who i was and fell into the trap and told him.  I asked him which cousin, he played it off saying I should recognize his voice and for me to guess which cousin it could be.  I gave him a name of someone who is not alive, he agreed and said that it was him.  When he agreed, i realised this was not a welcomed call but I stayed on the line fearing it was related to my family in Mexico.  I proceeded along with the tale and he claimed he was coming into town for work.  I asked him who was he visiting first, he said me. The call soon ended and I became very worried for my family in Mexico. I do not know how they got my number but after confirming everyone is well I found this information and wanted to report the same # reached me.  There should be more notice to the community and awareness of this kind of scam.

My mom just received a phone call 2 days ago stating that my cousin had been in an accident and needed money for the person that he hit. Also said something about having travelers checks but not being able to cash them until they get into the United States. Almost the exact same story as the above stories. My mom is very family oriented and will give us her last dime. She said that she was going to call my aunts and uncles and the person told her not to bother them. My mom tried to contact her sisters and brothers but could not get hold of anyone and sent them 900.00

We live in Idaho and my uncle recieved a call from the number 331 030 4940 saying it was a Nephew that got in a car accident and needed money. They told him to send it to Zapopan and my uncle did. Later to find out it was a scam. They have tried calling some of my other uncles a few hours ago with the same number. So is it from illinois or Guadalajara?

This happened last night and the caller was pretending to be a nephew of my sister in law. Went by the name of "Jose Luis". Said he was in Monterrey, Mexico and would be in San Antonio, Texas to buy a truck and would like to come to Houston to visit her. He knew her name and claimed to be her distant nephew that had not seen her since he was a child. He sounded very convincing and was adept at dodging probing questions while insisting on coming to see her to "catch up" over dinner. He asked when she would be at home etc. Please be aware this is a scam.

Prank Call
Today our phone rang and I picked it up. He said "Hello is Maria Navarro there?" I said she's not here right now. He asked for my name and I told him. I asked who it was but he wouldn't tell me. Then he started talking really fast in spanish and I couldn't understand him so I told my mom to answer it. She talked to him and when she asked who it was he said that it was our favorite cousin from Mexico. And my mom said "Gustavo?" (Which is our real cousin from Mexico) He said Yea!! Then he told her that they were on their way and that they just needed to get some gas. Then, about an hour later he called back. My dad answered and "Our Cousin" was yelling saying that he had went into a restricted area by a diesel truck at the gas station and that when he was trying to leave, his car spun out and hit another car. He said that there was a little car that flew out the windshield and that the father got mad and hit him and busted his lip (This was the excuse of why his voice sounded funny). Anyway the people he wrecked into didn't have insurance and they wanted "Our cousin to pay $2,500 because he only had Travelers Checks and could only cash them in Dallas and he was not in Dallas yet. So the "Federal Police" were threatening to take "out cousin" to jail if he didn't pay it. My dad actually believed him and asked how to get the money to them. He said through Western Union. And he was about to give him some number to wire the money to them. But, my dad wanted to make sure it was really our cousin so he asked "what is my wife's name and my son's name?" Then our "cousin" said that he didn't have time to answer these questions. My dad asked him again. Then another scam artist grabbed the phone and said that my dad and our "Cousin" were taking too long and that they needed the money. But my dad wanted to make sure it was legit. So he kept asking and asking to talk to our cousin again and finally he did. But it turns out he didn't know it wasn't real. It was just a scam. He really had us believing him for a second though. BEWARE OF THIS AREA CODE!!

This is a scam, if you reside in the US please call the FBI San Diego Division at (858) 565-1255. Since they are calling from Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico NOT ILLINOIS, also call (866) 201 5060 which is the Mexican hotline to denounce these types of cases. The more people who call denouncing this type of case, the more chances these criminals will get caught. Thank you!!!!

Gracias!!!

This caller actually talked to my mother.  The man knew information about a relative in Mexico and tried to get money from my mother.  His story was that he was driving from Mexico to her house and got in an accident on the way.   He asked for money because he was in an accident without any insurance.

We tried to call back this number and a second number (335-555-0000) he gave to my mother, but the numbers were invalid.  We are worried because the man asked for money and for her home address.  My brother called our relatives in Mexico to confirm the whereabouts of the relative.  Before we figured out that the caller was not a relative, my mother had already provided the information.

The person did not provide a company name.  He pretended to be a distant relative.  When my brother confronted the caller, he hung up.  We are concerned that the caller may have been trying to scope out my mother and her home.  We called the police to report the incident.  We are hoping that this was just a ploy to wire money and not rob the home.
