Got a message on the answering machine asking for my boyfriend by name, "hello? are you there?" then hung up. We don't even have the house phone number memorized yet and we haven't given it out on any website or to anyone but my parents.

10:47am caller didn't realize my answering machine picked up. Said my name, then when no response, hung up.

I have been receiving phone calls from 347-394-2664, that phone number is on my caller ID, and in both places as the caller and phone number. After so many of their phone calls: I picked up the phone and listen, there's no one there!! I only pick up when I know the person.
I give no money over the phone. If I donate I only give to our City/town, they need it more than anyone.

They get a paycheck just like everyone else. If they aren't happy with that check or anything else about that job, including the working conditions, then they can do like every other American has to do, and go find another job.

If like the other folks here have said it is calls for fire dept/police looking for donations....they can p****off. I don' have $ to give to my local heroes much less some s*** organization from NY. (no offense to New yorkers)

I do not make donations to any caller requesting money particularly when it deals with an organization such as firefighters or police...I prefer to give locally to the firefighters that protect their friends and neighbors in our community. Thank goodness for caller ID because if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer it! Then I Google the number to find out more!

Ricky, You can go to the DNC site and register. However, the dnc does not block calls. It is a list of those who do not wish to be called by Telemarketers. Only those honest businesses will comply, so don't expect it to stop those scam callers. If you were asking if this board has a do not call list, no it does not since it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's unwanted callers and is only a discussion board.

In my experience, such calls are normally from "fund raising companies" that take a huge percentage, and then make a token donation to the cause in order to keep from being prosecuted. A good rule of thumb is that if they called you, without you calling them first, they are going to be a poor excuse for a charity.
So yes, in my book, they are a scam.
Always check out a charity out on <www.charitynavigator.com> before giving. Even some well known charities have now been hijacked by people (in management) who are living the high life off of charity dollars, and giving very lucrative "fundraising contracts" to friends and relatives. So take the time to be sure that your hard earned money is being used responsibly.
Another thing to be wary of is callers who claim to represent a legitimate charity, or who use a charity name that sounds similar to a well known charity, when in fact the caller is simply a thief.
So, if you want my advice, never, ever, give money to someone who calls you on the phone. Go to Charity Navigator, find a responsible charity involved in a cause that is near and dear to your heart, and give to them. Not some creep who makes cold calls to bug you for money.
