Why would you pay a random caller, who may - or may not - be legitimate?  Per the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL - do not accept email or fax - proof of debt and proof that your caller has the legal right to collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their initial call to you is a violation of federal law.  In other words - no written verifiable proof of debt/proof they can collect - they can go pound sand, per federal law.  It doesn't matter if you remember paying or not - the burden of proof falls on the debt collector to show that you owe them money.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

No, you shouldn't have given them any information at all. It's a scam. Most of them are debts that have been paid off but they bought the list from a closing company and trying to collect a second time. Also....... they do not call you to tell you they are bringing the police. Most of them show up on caller id as a local area code when in fact they are in some other state.

I've received probably 25 or more messages left by this outfit on my voice recorder, always left in mid-afternoon, always some woman with a somewhat threatening message, never identifying who they are and, on top of it all, ask for the wrong person.  I've had the same phone number for 10 years, yet these scamsters continue to leave the same "you or your agent must contact us" BS.

A "John Peters" left a message on my office voicemail stating that he was "retained" by TAC & Associates and that a document was being delivered to me between the hours of 2pm and 5pm that required my signature. He then turned around and left a message on my mobile voicemail with basically the same message (except the document delivery time was now 3pm-5pm), but adds that he thought the document was being delivered to my residence, but it's actually going to my place of business (which is illegal). I could call him if I wanted to delay it for an hour or so. He gave me some file number and wished me "good luck". I've gotten several calls over many months from the 888 number he references. Several other messages were from an "Albert Aquino" threatening to "send my file for further action" if I didn't return his call. These people are hardcore debt collectors. They break all kinds of Fair Credit Reporting Act rules. I have no debt and I'm not sure what they're calling about. I don't get involved with these kinds of people. These messages and empty threats are all fraudulent and illegal.

I think this company is a scam. They contacted me in June threatened to take me to jail, put a lein on my car,and have the sherrif show up at my job/house to pick me up.They originally called me from 214-299-8561and my case workers name was Wayne Ross. Now I sit out of $291.00 they claim I owed. The funny thing about this situation is the first amount was $1700.00 and as the conversation goes on it goes all the way down to $291.00.Now 3 months later I am still waiting for a reciept in the mail.Ironnically, my case worker "Wayne Ross " no longer works there anymore and as of this morning they now only have an answering machine for you to leave a message.Wonder how long it takes to recieve a returned phone call.I am fully convinced that this company is a scam.

I called 1-888-6029-0890 and talked with a person from that company, and they in fact did not have any info on me. The other numbers that I have found have been disconnected and no longer in service. Here is a couple of the numbers that I got the same calls from 713-995-0993 (this number was given to another company today), 281-205-0837, and 888-609-0890.

Wait ... are you serious? A drug-addled thief pretending to be a debt collector who extorts money on the phone to support your drug habit is telling your victims to swallow a pill?

HILARIOUS! Tell us another one ... it keeps you off the phone for another few minutes anyway!
