The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) prohibits debt collectors from making false threats of arrest and falsely impersonating a law enforcement official.

If there is a violation of the the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act FDCPA you can get up to $1,000 in statutory damages, plus actual damages including compensation for harassment, embarrassment and frustration.  If you are successful, the debt collector will have to pay your court costs and reasonable attorney?s fees.

Your best option may be to have an attorney help get their attention or pursue claims under FDCPA.  Your state may also have its own remedies for abusive or unfair debt collection.

I have been getting calls from this number for about two weeks. It is a foreign man talking says something like he is Mr. Black from the FBI and I have to call him back about some charges. If I don't call him back they will prosecute me. I have no idea what the heck this is about, I have been out of work for more then a year and have no credit card bills or another debit that I know of to cause the FBI on me....Is this legal or what who do I call about this rude man calling me.

The number 347-637-6458 just called my fiances phone twice for me. The first time I couldn't understand much due to the thick indian accent. Kept asking what they were talking about. They wouldn't tell me what the company was. When I explained I know all my loan amounts, contracts etc she just kept repeating we are pressing legal charges against you and if you can not pay you will be arrested. I then made the mistake an mentioned I had a loan with Cash Advance after she told me the amount and then she kept saying I didn't go through them that the loan was actually through whatever company they are. I started to raise my voice and she put me on hold and started talking to her "manager" He got on the phone an was saying everything she did. I started to explain again to him that he doesn't know what he is talking about and that is not my information. He then started to yell at me. I told him to stop yelling, he proceed so I hung up. They then called my fiances phone again, I explained I reported them to the FBI ((link I found on this webpage))  She asked what they said to me. Repeated again I reported them to the FBI and she needs to take me off their list. Every time, she tried talking I just kept repeating myself until she hung up. I hate people like this, hate even more that some scammer company has all my information.

I keep getting phone calls from this "Indian accented" man who keeps saying i owe all this money to the some company that i have never even heard of. I contacted the phone company, the sheriff's office, and the federal trade commission. I applied for a credit card online and they sold my information to these dirtbags.  Am not going to let them get away with this harrassment. I am filing a complain with the federal trade commission. So I hope their fake agency, gets a dose of what they put honest hardworking people through.

A person, claims there is some sort of dept owed by one of my empoyees.  His tone is of a theating manner and is no way professional.  My employee has changed his phone number on his personnal phone, but we can not change our number.  I will be having the police/FBI look into this if I get one more call from this number.  We also have the ability to block that number, which is another step we may have to take.

Receieved a call and voicemail from an indian-accented man with heavily broken english, couldn't even pick up his name. Says he's from some made-up "bureau." Apparently its the same guys behind scamming people with bogus payday loans and thier same speech with regards to "time-sensitive" matters regarding their SSN, legal action, etc.  Only difference is the phone #'s they use.  They just don't know when to quit.  Again, DO NOT give in to these guys, continue to report them and any # they use to IC3, FTC, FBI, FCC, etc..  hopefully one day these b*****ds will get a dose of thier own medicine from a real federal agency

I received a call from this number asking for an emplopyee whom works here.   He states his name is "Officer Mackalight"  BS Name.   He couldnt speak without a slur.   He sounded 100% drunk when he called.   I kept asking for his name and number and he couldnt understand what i meant.   I am beginning to dislike the phone system and the authorities whom are supposed to monitor it.

Interesting how scammers do grab the interest of most of us.
We needen't feel bad about being called or suckered.
We just need to keep mindful that the internet contains very active b.s.,
the nature of which is to get something from us.

They left a message since I don't answer unknown calls.  Could hardly understand foreign speaking man who said that someone was going to take legal action against me for an unpaid debt.  What the heck; I don't owe anyone except for a credit card which is being paid off monthly!

Update:  "Officer Washington" (not a real officer of anything except scams) says that the investigation is related to a loan taken on an internet website called US Fastcash.  However, she cannot say what company the alleged loan was with.

If a real company wanted to collect from you, they would give the name of the company.  These people want to scare you so you start coughing up money.  They are working the numbers.  Most people who take out payday loans default on at least one of them, so they are counting on you to just assume they are calling to collect on a legitimate loan.  The fact that they can't even identify the name of the company who issued the loan is a sure sign this is pure scam.

According to the information provided, it appears that these calls may be a scam. Here is a link to a December 2010 News Release by the FBI regarding its investigation of these activities: http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710.

Below are some general suggestions for consumers with respect to these calls:

IGNORE THE CALLS. However, if you do speak with a collector, hold your ground: refuse to pay without written evidence of the alleged debt and written evidence of who they are, where they are and of their authority to collect the alleged debt (through the U.S. Mail). If they threaten to arrest you, invite them to please do so, but trust that the caller is not in law enforcement and that the threat is empty. No one is going to come and take you to jail or send anyone to arrest you, or any of the other threats reported, because the people behind these calls do not want to be located or identified. The caller is simply using fear and intimidation to get what he/she wants ? payment information over the telephone.

DISCUSS THE MATTER WITH YOUR EMPLOYER. One option might be to consider setting-up a voice mailbox into which these calls can be sent. Another may be to forward the unwanted calls into a fax machine number, or to put the phone down and walk away until the caller finishes his/her ?rant.? We believe that the calls will eventually cease once the caller realizes that no one is listening or that they are not getting anywhere.

DO NOT USE UNIVERSAL PAYDAY LOAN ?APPLICATION LEAD SITES? ON THE INTERNET. And do not use search terms like "bad credit loans" or "payday loans" to find extensions of credit online. If consumers need to avail themselves of a payday loan product, they should first contact their state's credit regulator for a list of lenders licensed to make loans to consumers in that state. In Wisconsin, that is our Department. If a licensed lender has a website, then only use that website to apply; do not go through any type of lead application or ?loan broker? site to apply for loans online. Some licensed lenders also have actual ?brick-and-mortar? stores in their state. Use the store to avoid putting personal information online.

FILE A REPORT OF YOUR COMPLAINT with the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (FBI): www.ic3.gov, and the Federal Communications Commission http://www.fcc.gov/.
