I just bought my Huawei Smarthub yesterday with a 10Gb data usage plan, I played a few games of League of Legends, went on facebook for a few hours and checked my data usage on the Huawei site and it was only at 197Mb, I shut the router off for the night, as in no more data was used, then get an SMS on the Huawei site, saying I've used 95% of my data; now you can easily guess that it makes no fricking sense, the SMS was from 400-111-1111, saying it was a, "Free TELUS Message".

I got a message from this same number around 10pm telling me that it was a free Telus message and I had used 75% of my data, and could go to a site to track my data usage. I was at home and using my wifi, I haven't been using my data anymore than I have been in the past two years since I got my phone, and for the first time in two years I get this message. The following morning I see I have a message from the same number sent at 1:13 am telling me that I have used 95% of my data and to go to this site and download an app and track my usage. It seems really fishy to me. Going to call my service provider and get them to figure it out!

I got the same message about using 75% of my data but it was claiming to be from koodo. When I checked my account online I had actually only used 4% of it.

I think the Telus tech was full of it. I get lots of automated texts from Telus when I travel and it's never from this number. My data usage is also fine based on my account summary and my usage tracking app. I'm willing to bet this is a phishing scam. If not, it's some sort of scumbag move by Telus. Disregard either way.

I got this text last night, my neighbour got the same one. I called up tech support, because we thought there might be a problem with the tower in our neighbourhood, since neither of us have done anything differently this month than we've done since our contracts started, and we've never gone over our Data limits.

The tech support agent told me that my usage was fine, not anywhere close to being over, and that my usage was consistant, and if I kept using my data the same way I always do, I don't have anything to worry about, but that the texts were definitely fishy, and that her superiors couldn't tell if this was a legit Telus number. She was advised to report it to the Fraud department, and they will follow up with me in a few business days.

Event Reminder
Update -- it *was* a valid sms from Telus.  Telus said some BS about "that's the number for text messages sent to a data plan" ... but I still don't understand why the message ITSELF said "callback number 1400111111".  Really stupid thing to do.  According to wikipedia, the 400 area series area codes are Mexico, although 400 itself, can't find any information out about it.

Also unknown is why the sms was repeated 4 times over the course of 2 hours.  A little excessive.

My conclusion -- Telus was spamming us trying to force us to call them so they could sell us a more expensive data plan.

Repeated text messages claiming to be Telus, telling us that "you used 75% or more of your data plan", with some text about how to get a bigger package from tellus, but THEN telling us the callback number was 14001111111.  The repeated text messages *almost* got me to call the number, but then I realized that 1-400 wasn't Ontario/Canada, and voila, realized it was spam and/or fraudulent.

I wouldn't be surprised to discover that this number is one where you're reverse charged $10 when you call it.
