Debt Collector
Just received a call at work to my receptionist, asking her to let me know that it's important I call back asap as there are pending legal charges. No company name, no correspondence and no real debt.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I just received a call from Legal Mediation Dept. from 404-647-2816. The caller name is Vanessa Long.  Two years ago, I did take out a payday loan. I didn't pay for various financial problems that was going on with me at that time. Since that time, I have filed bankruptcy and have been declared bankrupt.  The payday loan were included in the filing of bankruptcy. Why do they still continue to call?  Even though, they were told about the bankruptcy and given the attorney's phone number. According to this person, Vanessa Long, bankruptcy would not clear this up.  According to my attorney, it does. The Legal Mediation Dept is trying to say that when they try to collect the funds, the funds were not there because the bank closed the account. Anyway, they are still trying to collect.

I also received a call from "investigator Floyd" from the check fraud division. He left a message indicating that he was working in collaboration with the State of California. He said that I was going to be charged with 2 felony counts of worthless checks. He said I should contact him immediately to rectify the situation. Thanks to this website!!!!

Today I received a call from Investigator Flloyd, he claims I owe money on a payday loan that I did take out over 5 years ago. The loan was paid off so I didnt understand why I was receiving a call at all for something that was paid, and so old.  He said I was going to be arrested at work and I could be picked up while going to Church or even running errands.  He made no sence at all...just rambling off weird threats that made no sence at all.  Reality is, if you have a check you wrote that was not paid, it would go to the court system and they would mail you information to be addressed.  Nobody will call and harrass you at work or anywhere.  SCAMMERS

YES,INVESTIGATOR FLOYD, AND INVESTIGATOR WILCOX CONTACTED ME ABOUT A PAYDAY LOAN THAT I NEVER HAD IN A STATE THAT I HAD NOT LIVED IN. SHE SAID THE LOAN WAS TAKEN OUT WAY BACK IN 2009 AND THEY GOT AUDITED AND BUNCH MORE BULL CRAP. I TOLD THEM I DID NOT EVEN LIVE THERE, BUT THEY STILL TOLD ME I HAD 24 HOURS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OR I WOULD BE LOCKED UP. SHE SAID SHE ALREADY KNEW WHERE I WORKED AND LIVED, I TOLD HER IF THAT WERE THE CASE HOW IT TOOK 4 YEARS TO GET IN TOUCH WITH ME. EVENTUALLY, I HUNG UP AND DON'T PLAN ON SPEAKING TO THEM AGAIN BECAUSE IF ANYTHING IT WOULD GO ON MY CREDIT, OR AT BEST GO TO COURT ABOUT IT.

Yes I have gone back and forth with an investiogator Floyd, Investigator Mann and an Investigator Anderson.  They are claiming my husband has an outstanding payday loan.  From what I've gathered fromt he internet and searching the phone number they are scammers. I told them to send it in writing and hung up on them.... they at first had my hisband convinced he was going to jail blah blah blah.  well they have no check from us and defaulting on a payday loan is not a criminal offense. We did have a payday loan at one time but bnot with the company they are claiming and the only reason the loan was defaulted on was because they tried to take the money early and overdrafted out account... then tried it again several more times right after so more charges. the bank suggested we bring the account current and close it to be done with them. So thats what we did then we hear nothing for 4 years now these people call out of the blue.  I think they are scammers that buy old lists and try to scam people out of more money.  Heck may even be the payday loan people trying to get more money. Pay day loans are a scam in the first place, and they lie.

These people claim to be with Morgan and Shapiro in Atlanta there is no such place and if you search it it comes up with even more numbers and scammers........ BEWARE
