I got the same phone call (18 desember 2008)here in Norway (Oslo - +47 66 area) about having won a trip to Bahamas and question about pressing 9 (no phone number on the display).  Seems like they are now trying to call people all around the world.  Before hanging up the phone, the girl talking asked me if I could speak english..

What a stupid scam!  I really get angry that this "business" should be possible in 2008 ;-( !

if you pick up and then hang up straight away, do you get charged on your phone bill??

7.13pm on 9 December - Shropshire.  Heard the words "congratulations" and "international" and hung up immediately.  Ex directory.

I live in the West of England and, like the previous person, I received a call from 04079-650600 on 3 Dec.
I am also ex-directory and TPS registered.
I guess they have an auto dial system which dials a batch of number sequentially and it does not know who they are dialling.

If the RCMP does not get them the SAS will.

I had a call while I was out - no message.  I asked BT (freephone) what the charge would be to return the call and they said it is overseas telemarketing.  Owing to some sloppy programming they do not correctly check the caller ID on incoming international calls,  allowing spurious numbers like this to get through.

A couple of years ago I had a call like the ones you describe from a Florida telemarketer.  She was trying to persuade me to take a 'free' gambling holiday on a cruise ship.  I had some time to kill so I kept the woman busy for 20 minutes and then tied her supervisor up for another 40 minutes.  I was trying to waste as much of their time and money as I could.  When I asked how they got my number, it was because I stayed in a Holiday Inn and this cruise company was part of the Holiday Inn group.

Went to voice mail and hangup.

sharing with you that we have been called by this number tonight. it was about 10 minutes ago. we are also registered with the tps service. but it does seem like these calls are possible generated from abroad. it annoys me that these calls are more frequent, but as we have caller id we screen our calls before we answer them. also as someone said in their post if it's a normal human and important then they will leave a message!!! i wonder how we can report this?

I got called by that number too, I live in the Cotswolds, They asked me to press 9 so I hung up just in case it was one of those that charge you.

As above in cheltenham and TPS registered + ex directory hung up once the said press 9 yada yada. Jokers like this deserve to be removed from civilisation.

I live in Glasgow and just got a call from this number.  I was in the shower and missed it.  I'm with the Telephone Preference Agency, but they seem to have got through.  I've never seen a number like it!

Looking at the forum they seem to call specific areas at certain times, today seems to be the turn of Glasgow!

no message but number was on my 1471 - im in Paisley but glad I checked it out before calling back - which I suspect most people do and its what they want?

Hi, its tuesday night 6pm on the 20th nov. i live in glasgow and just got called by that number 5 mins ago.. i didnt answer it but it rang for a solid minute non stop. I typed it in to google and ended up here. Getting to the stage of wanting to get rid of house phone. Only have it for internet connection and thats a rubbish 1.6 at times anyway hurrumph!

I just got a call from this number and I'm from Glasgow in the UK! I just hung up too! They are so annoying!!!!

I had a call from this number, however all my 'phones have caller display; if I don't recognise the number I never answer, I let it go to answerphone.  (Normal people would leave a message.) As usual no message.  I did press ringback to see if it named a firm but it just gave a line discontinued tone.

I just had a call from the same number, saying that i had been selected out of hndreds of thousands an won something. Total bull, i know, so i hung up, it kept my line busy for more than 5 mins. Does anyone know if the charges are reversed on these calls? i dont want to get a bill and i have a premium rate number on my bill sucking my money dry.

I am registered with a company that stops cold calls like this so im thinking of getting in contact with them just incase i am charged for the calls.

I wish people would just get regualr jobs instead of tryin to rob people blind. Its not like im rich, i am out of work and have children. I bet these people are living a lavish life through fraud.

Another call in Walsall, hung up when I realised it was a dialer.

I live in Walsall in the West Midlands. Just put the phone down on this number. Automated female American voice told me I'd been selected for something or other, I didn't listen for more than a few seconds. Afterwards, when I went to dial 1471, I found I was still connected to the voice. It took half a dozen attempts at hanging up before the irritating Yank went away.

Call to home in Devon from this number and Im registered not to recive such calls

I been called today.
The call was silente. No tone, no voice. Nothing.
My phone number is registered with tps, by phone me they broke the law.
Is disgusting that just beecause the hide beind the phone, the not respect the law

Only had BT line for 4 days and the 1st call I get is an automated call saying i'd won something. Don't know what i'd won but when I tried to 1471 it appeared my line was held up by the call as the automated response started again!!!
