How interesting - here is a twist on this same theme....My mother was calling Chase Mastercard to inquire about her credit card.  She dialed the proper number, entered last four digits of her account number and entered her zip code.  She then hit zero for Customer Service and guess what?  She gets an "Indian Guy" who immediate congratulated her, said she was the 10th caller and would receive a receive $50 Gas card and a $20 Wal-Mart Certificate.

Unfortunately, my mother "thought" she was talking to Chase Mastercard so when he asked for her account #, she gave it to him along with her expiration date, address, and so on.  He then said she would be charged $2 and had 30 days to change her mind before getting a monthly charge for 'discounted' items.   My mother "caught on" and said she was not interested - he then said she cannot cancel as the "package" was already sent and he would give her a Pin # (sound familiar?).  However, she had to 'remain on the line' and answer "yes" to some tape recorded questions.  My mother insisted she was not interested and he continued to persist and persist.

This Indian guy proceeded to call my mother back and I got on the line and told him not to call back again.  I then got on the phone with Chase Mastercard and had the card closed down.

Believe it or not, the Indian guy called back one hour later and, this time, he pretended he was the 'Supervisor' of the Indian guy that I told NOT to call back!   He then 'explained' his name was "Ron Williams" and he was with Everday Privileges and we had called "HIM" earlier.   He then proceeded to try to persuade me to listen to the recording and I had to answer 'Yes' to the questions - can you believe this guy?   I then very LOUDLY told him NO and that he had better not call us again.

Jeez...I think the key point is how did my Mother end up talking to this guy ?   She dialed Chase Mastercard and if I didn't know better, I'd say the line was hacked and he took over the call!  Beware when you call Credit Card Companies and be sure you know you are REALLY talking to the Credit Card Company.

One last thing... I had a typo.. "Ron Williams" (the Indian Guy) said he was with a company called "Every Day Privileges" - but then again ....we all know that's most likely not true nor is his name really Ron Williams (wink wink).

Beware !

Same thing happened to me today. Although first it was an 800 number it's actually 877-231-7454 and if you don't answer to that then they will send you a text message. Me being naive actually called it but I knew something was up when he said I will transfer you to my manager and all I heard was a beep and then the guy was on the line sounded like the same guy. Said for me to hold for at least 30 seconds and to respond yes or no to some ?'s I hung up. Then they kept calling me back to the point where I had to turn my cell phone off. For some reason they are calling people's cell phones. Just out of curiousity are the people that are posting comments on here do you have facebook accounts? Because they may have gotten your information through there especially your cell phones. I am going to report them right now.

One Clarification - the $1 charged that was charged to my mother's Chase Credit Card seemed to be some  "obscure charge" with a phone number attached to it.

I asked a Chase Rep to call the number on my mother's behalf.   When the Chase rep called the number - the person on the other end (let's call him Mr. Innocent) seemed to be aware of $1 charges being charged to credit cards and said it would be refunded and it was 'in error'.

Interestingly we never gave him my mother's name nor any information but he offered that these charges were 'in error'.  He further claimed that he had never heard of Ron Williams or of a company called Every Day Privileges although he did say that his uh..company 'American Auto Refunds' dealt with multiple Marketing companies (wink wink).

The identical thing happened to my mother almost exactly as you've stated.

However, beware....here is an interesting twist.....My mother called Chase Mastercard to inquire about her Mastercard account.  She knows she did dialed the correct number as she was routed through the usual IVR and entered the usual last four digits of her account number and she entered her zip code.  She then hit '0' for Customer Service and an "Indian Guy" came on and said congratulations you are the 10th caller and you have won...yep you guessed it....a $50 gas card and $20 Wal-Mart Gift Certificate.

Because she "thought" she was talking to Chase Mastercard she unwittingly gave him her Account # and expiration date when he asked for it!  She caught on when he said she would be charged $2 and could 'cancel' her subscription within 30 days...he also told her that the 'package' had been sent and she could not cancel.

I got on the phone and he was belligerant with me.   Well he also called back three times after that and the third time he pretended to be the "Manager" of the Indian Guy saying his name was Ron Williams (yeah right) and he was with a company called 'Every Day Privileges'.  For some reasons he was "hell-bent" on giving me a Pin # and also "hell-bent" on my remaining on the line to say 'yes' to some recorded questions !    Anyway we promptly shutdown my mother's card due to possible Fraud and the account was charged $1 which of course is being disputed and we'll not pay as we told Chase all about our "episode".   The key takeway is...that for some odd reason it appears this guy was able to hack into either Chase's phone system and intercept my Mother or...our local phone line was hacked - it's just highly coincidental that my Mother was on the line with Chase Mastercard when the Indian Guy "'materialized".   Be alert and beware!

SMS
I received a text from this number stating to call 1-877-339-8869 to receive a $20 gift card from Wal-Mart and a $50 gas gift card.  I called the number and a representative by the name of Jennifer Smith stated that I was receiving the gift card simply because I was a Wal-Mart shopper and that I would not have to pay for the gift cards and that they would mail them to me via U.S. mail (regular not first class)  then she stated there would be a 1 time fee of $2.00 and which credit card would I like to use ( don't a postage stamp cost 42 cents) anyway I got a little uneasy after she ask for my credit card number and the fact that I never gave Wal-mart any of my information for them to contact me, so I hanged up the phone and the number (408--587-2184) called me back 5 times......  Please do not answer if this number calls you and dont respond to any text messages.

Telemarketer
This number is a telemarketer and has been calling me for a week and a half.  I've gone through automation at least 6 times and asked them to stop calling me.  They still call me 5 times a day.  Contact the FTC from the number that they are calling you on and register your number for the DO NOT CALL list... FTC (888) 382-1222.

If they call you again after 30 days, you can then file a complaint.

I answer and get a message concerning the government's actions for refinancing homes.  I ask for an address and that information cannot be given out.  If I press to ask to a supervisor they hang up.  They calls 4-5 times per day.
