You intuition was right.  The same scam has been running in the UK for years.  These people are not from Microsoft or its partners as neither would ever 'phone.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.  The people who 'phone are Indian scammers and all the information he gave you is rubbish.  He might just as well said his name was Santa Claus and his address was the North Pole.  Sometimes they give you what they say is the Licence |Number of your machine.  Sounds good as you can see that number.  However, it is the Windows Licence Number and is the same on all computers, worldwide, which run Windows.  These people know nothing about our machines.  The don't know the ISP or the IP address and they don't know which version, if any, of Windows we are running.  They even 'phone Mac users to fix Windows faults!  What they want is remote access to the computer and, if they get it, they will install spyware/malware to  steal personal information like bank details and passwords.  There is a warning about this scam on the Microsoft website and it has been exposed on several UK TV programmes over the years.

A man with a heavy accent, sounded Indian to me, said his name was Rickey told me my computer is being hacked, right now! He is from Micro Soft Windows. My server sent him a hacking code. He will help me take care of it. He gave me his ID #-2114, his employee#-99968SD and phone # 1-855-203-7516. By giving me his info he seemed like he might be legit but my intuitionsays not so. Earlier when I was on You Tube I couldnt watch the videos I wanted to watch. So maybe I am being hacked? Help! Oh and the caller ID had unknown on it.

April 2014  I've had the same phone call twice this week.  Hard to hear, saying they are from Windows, I have been hacked, etc. and wanting to get remote control of my computer to fix my security.  Unfortunately, he got me to delete a mui file which is 409 before I smelled a rat.  It was when I asked for his phone number he put the phone down on me.  Have I damaged my computer by deleting '409'?

This is the third call I have received from this man with an India accent telling me my Windows computer has a virus. When i ask him what company are you with he says the "anti hacking dept" at Microsoft. He supposedly already has my identification number but wants me to give him remote access to my computer! I DON'T THINK SO BUBBA!! Every time I talk to him his name is different. This time it was James (Wabson) Watson. My caller id shows unavailable number so I ask him why. He says to protect Microsoft... But he gives me his phone number 813-902-2332. I just wished he would quit calling.

SCAM! "Steve Watson", with a heavy Indian accent (also another Indian "tech support staff" in background) called me from "Microsoft Tech Support". He tried to get me to go through some prompts on my computer to find the errors that were reported to support, that unresolved could cause my hard drive to crash. After my questioning, he said he had ?my personal License ID #? and he could prove that he "received an error through Microsoft about my system". Called from (404) 891-5588 and also claimed he was legit by giving me this email address- http://www.windowserversupport.com/index.html and then told me to call the number on the page (209 727 2666), which is also part of their scam. Wanted me to type in eventvwr in my computer? (google it=hackers). Was VERY adamant about fixing my problem, raised his voice and was not very professional on the phone. After a quick google search, I found his name, but it seems they change their names every few times.
The conversation went something like this;

Him: "Do you see the Windows button on your Windows PC?".
Me: "Yes."
Him: "Click on it and the R button at the same time. What do you see?"
Me: "The run box."
Him: "Very good, ma?am. Now enter EVENTVWR and click OK."
I called the other number they gave me and spoke to another Indian ?technician?. He told me to Go to my Windows button at the bottom of the screen and type EVENTVWR in the search bar. I then played along with his prompts and pretended I was going through the screen. Once he knew I wasn?t following he said ?You are wasting my time? and hung up! I wanted to see how far they would go. Looks like those are the two ways they try and get you!
Took this from a reporting website:
However, this week, two sites alleged to be involved were still listed as "Microsoft Gold Certified Partners", which Microsoft says means that they must have "demonstrated expertise" and "must employ a minimum number of Microsoft Certified Professionals".
The company has noticed the problem. "Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer," it says on its website.
"If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up. We do not make these kinds of calls."

I just got this exact same call today. When he told me I had to download something, I knew things were fishy, so I did a search of the file name "AA_v3.exe" and of course results showed that it was a virus.

The guy claimed to be from Microsoft and this is the website he used: http://microsoftonlinesupp.webs.com/ .

I was so close to cursing the guy out, but instead I just said "Nice try" and hung up.

Tech support never calls customers! You call them!
If you're ever asked to download a ".exe" file with a weird name...don't do it!! Its a virus.

I too received a call from someone who with a very heavy indian accent very reluctant to say where he was from then eventially said he was from www.london. He pronounced vorld vide veb! Insisted I log on to my computer and he could fix the errors he said he was receiving. Got quite angry when I refused and he kept repeating it was not a sales call but very serious if I did not log on and he could resolve. Said I would resolve any issues myself and he said that if I did it would cost me £300. Put the phone down.

I also received an unsolicited call this morning.  The first caller was a woman with a very heavy Indian accent, almost impossible to understand.  Like everyone else she had me open a "Windows Event Viewer" that displayed a long list of errors, then told me there were so many errors that she would have to have me speak to a "senior tech".  He also had a very strong Indian accent, but assured me everything was alright, he just needed to download a software program called "Team Viewer" at the cost of $99.99 so his people could fix all the errors.  They must have taken 4 to 5 hours once they entered my computer.  Then he wanted me to send an email stating that they had worked on my computer.   My computer had been running very slow and was generating error messages that were sent to Microsoft, so I thought these messages were probably what generated their call.  After they were done my computer did not much faster than before.  Now I am worried about what they may have actually downloaded onto my computer.  I paid using PayPal, hopefully they will be able to stop the payment.

Same happend to me today (2012 october 9) i Live in Sweden. One trick they use is ask u to goto comand prompt and ping 0.0.0.0 they claimed the the 100% packet loss indicated that my computer had a problem. It was hard to hear what they talked about. Some important words just gabled. Poor sound . Had to realy concentrate on what they where saying. They eventualy came to a western union page asking for creditcard no "to stopp the hackers from using it". Thats when i pulled the network plugg.
They asked me to download a file AA_v3.exe. by witch they got remote access and scanned my drive for viruses. Also and im not sure about the following, they installed a hidden directory "Boot" with serveral  dirs containing files like bootmgr.exe.mui. Is this is a part for window 7 that i run? I think not plse confirm if u do know.

I have been in the IT business since 1999 and have never heard of Microsoft contacting customers on a personal basis. Microsoft, being the big corporate business that they are, cares peanuts about your operating system functioning. Let alone, they will not initiate contact with you except through more of a legal conduit.

Anyway, a client informed me about an "Albert" that called from this number. The website the caller may refer to windowsonlinelab.com is NOT registered to Microsoft. A WHOIS query of the website lists the site as registered too:

DIRECTI INTERNET SOLUTIONS PVT. LTD. D/B/A

   Tel. +45.36946676

It is a SCAM. Skip it. Use your higher brain functions when answering the phone. Ask intelligent questions and you will probably root out the truth.
And since you are so engrossed in reading what I have typed, take the next 10-15 minutes and backup your personal information on DVD/CD media AND label it. It will save you a lot of head ache in the future! Google it if you don't know how.

This guy is still around (maybe 2 of them).  Got a call Friday 4/6/12 from (what he said) was Windows Technical Support then changed it later to Windows Technical support "partner".  Same old stuff - computer infected with viruses.  "could have infected all 3 computers that were turned on" etc., gave 2 phone numbers if I needed to call back:  1-408-786-5612 and Toll free @855-730-3380.  When I called back, no answer, but did have a returned call from the ...5612 to see if I had called with trouble on my computer.

My son frowned on my gullibility (yes, I did know better, was taken off guard) and suggested I "wipe" my computer. I chose to do a Recovery to an earlier date - hope I don't regret it.

Got the call today. Same story. I strung the guy along forever, asking questions, getting a name (David), a number (this one), and after asking whether I should turn on the screen part or the box part, told him I own a Mac (totally untrue). He immediately hung up.

I received a call at my home number with the same information as above.  A man with broken english told me he was with Microsoft and had determined I had a problem with my computer.  I ask him how could he even see my computer, because it had been off for a long time.
I told him he wasn't my carrier and to stop calling me, I wasn't falling for his crap!

I just encountered the same scam.  I recieved an unsolicited call from Dennis from Windows Support.  He had a heavy Indian accent.  He claimed he did not work for Microsoft becasue they do not call their customers directly.  He was a third party vendor for them.  He claimed that his systems showed that my computer was having a problems and potentially infected with a virus.  When I initially questioned the validity of the call, he gave me an IP address that he claimed that was mine.  When I told him the IP was not on my LAN, he said that he couldn't give me the exact IP address because it could be hacked.  Continuing to be skeptical, I told him that I was unsure of the legitamacy of the call.  He gave me the phone number to call back on (408-786-5612) and ask for Dennis.  When I called back, someone answered the phone as "tech support" and later said he was from Windows tech support.  Feeling a little bit better about the call, I was directed to goto www.windowsonlinecare.com to download an application (AA_v3.exe).  I continued to be skeptical, but was told not to worry.  I downloaded the program and let the tech have control of my pc...being sure to watch to see if he was gonna look at my private information.  He explained that he was not able to "fix" my issue and transfered me to a 2nd level tech.  The 2nd level tech continued to explain that my computer was infected with 4700 viruses and he could fix them at a cost of $50.  I refused and hung up the phone.  Be cautious about this scam.  When I called my local police department, he said he could take the report, but little could be done about it.  Please try and track this organization down before others fall for this scam

Event Reminder
He is back. I let this guy take me through all the steps to look at my log information. . . how scary it must be to have so many warnings of possible threats. . . oh, wait. . . I am not having any issues with my computer at present. So, I let him walk me through the steps to get to his web site and when we get to the point where my computer asks if I (really) want to download an executable file - I start asking questions. He starts to talk faster which does not help his accent and when I ask for clarification he gets frustrated. I ask for a number where I can call him back and I don't get an 800 number, I get a 408 area code number. . . not really what you expect from customer support.

My optomistic, hopeful side wanted to believe that possibly Microsoft was being proactive but then, NO.

When it took too long for me to respond, because I was busy looking up his number, he hung up on me. Awww, I was having fun. So long Lee, I will miss the quality customer support.

got a call with a indian woman whom I could not understand, kept telling her I could not understand her and she much more plainly said she would get her supervisor to talk to me...then her male  "supervisor" comes on the line and says he is with Windows Support and they have been getting reports that my computer/laptop is infected with viruses...he wanted me to go to my computer so that he could help me remove the virus...I told him I was not at home...he said but "I just called you at home"...i told him that he didnt call the woman that I could not understand had called, and could I please have his number to call him back when I got back Home....he gave me the number and said I could call before 5:30 today...I asked him 5:30 in what time zone...he said "in your local time Zone"...I asked "and what time zone would that be Eastern or Pacific?"...he said again in your local time zone...I told him that my house sits on a time zone divisional line and therefore I have two local time zones (all BS I am in central time zone)...he told me to choose the earlier time zone...I have no intentions of calling him back...am so glad I was suspicious.

I just got the same call from "James Mile".  Exactly the same story...he told me I have a virus etc.  I work for HP and my computer is HP property loaded virus protection so I was skeptical to begin with.  Also, I'm working from home today and my home number is not associated in any way with my PC since my PC is the property of HP.  I asked him how he got my number and he said it was a part of my "record".  I knew there was no way he was legit.  I asked for his phone number and got 408-786-5612 like everyone else.  I will be filing an internet crime complaint.

same story as those told here. got a call from an individual (name does not matter because from the previous posts it changes) well anyway he claimed to be John Victor from Microsoft support. He had very heavy middle eastern accent. Wanted me to sit down at my computer and he was going to guide me to error reports. asked his name again. I said I would call him back ( I have not and will not). Googled the phone number and got this post.
