This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

I got a call from a "Richard Anderson" and Baker & McKenzie Law Firm.  He started his spiel about lawsuits and being arrested and so forth because of fraud on a pay day loan.  When I started asking questions, he got ugly and told me to shut up.  I told him I would not shut up as I have every right to know.  He hung up on me.  I got a similar call last week from another number, same story.  When the j*** off said "you'll be arrested tomorrow", I replied with "well how about I go to my police station right now and sit down with the Chief of Police.  I know him personally, and I'm sure we can get this arrest b*llshi*t straightened out."  To which the nut job replied "You're a stupid b*tch and don't call me asking for help".  OK.
Don't worry about these idiots.  Just take the number, the name they give you, the name of the law firm they give you and report it all to the FTC and your State Attorney General.  Maybe even local police, sheriff or state law enforcement offices.  They should all have fraud divisions.  Also, say "please hold a moment" give it about a minute and come back on the line with "this call is now being recorded".  ESPECIALLY if they call you at work.

SCAM!!!  SCAM!!! SCAM!!!  SCAM!!!  WARNING!!!  WARNING!!!  WARNING!!!  WARNING!!!
These people called me today.  The guy said he was calling from Baker and McKenzie Law Firm.  He then asked if he was speaking to ______ and gave my name.  I said yes.  He then said that there had been a lawsuit filed against me and asked if I was aware of it.  To which I responded, no!  He went further to say that he represented Instant Cash, a payday loan company, and that they were going to prosecute me for check fraud, some federal crime about the Internet, and theft by taking.  But that I could settle out of court and avoid prosecution.  I told him that I had never had a payday loan.  He then gave me my name, address, social security number, name of my bank and account number.  He said that if I didn't settle out of court that he would have federal agents, local sheriff's deputies and attorneys from their firm show up at my house or place of business.  I told him to send them on and I would have a pot of coffee ready when they got here.  This is a HUGE SCAM!!!  Don't fall for it!!  I went to my local sheriffs office and spoke to a detective and she actually called them.  When she started asking questions, they hung up on her too.  I noe have a flag on my credit reports and a flag on my checking account since I know they have my information.  I knew better than to fall for their crap but thought I would share my story so no one else gets scammed.

Received a call from this number. Telling me that there was a case filed against me in the state of Florida. Wanted to know my attorney's name and number. I informed them that I was an attorney. The man kept talking in circles. I told them not to call me back. They called back within two minutes from the same number. I again told them I was an attorney and I did not want them to call me back. So far so good.

Man with a VERY heavy accent threatened to have me arrested by the local sheriff's office for a fake debt. Funny thing is I am a sergeant for the local sheriff's office and they called me on my desk phone at the Sheriff's Office.:) When I told them that they hung up. I called them back and asked if they had filled out the id-10t forms needed to proceed. They were quite confused. It's an old joke but one that still worked on them. I hope they are sitting there later today and suddenly get the meaning.

People, it is illegal, even if the debt is valid, for collections to threaten you when attempting to collect. It's against the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) Another tid-bit. No one but the ORIGINAL debtor can actually get your arrested and that is through a civil court judge, These companies that buy debt and try to collect have no power that way.

Here's a site with good tips.

I have recieved several phone calls from a woman who claims to not be an attorney but can tell me that I'm suspect in a crime. She tried to put me on hold when I told her that I knew it was a scam and for her not to call. Just in case, I called the local precinct to find out if she was correct. Of course, there was no record! So, I called them back....and it JUST so happened that the "lead attorney" answered. I never gave him my name but began throwing all kinds of questions at him. He told me it was about a payday loan I took out earlier this year. I told him that I have NEVER had a payday loan....he hung up on me!!! I've heard so many stories of people getting taken by people like this. PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS!!!! It could SAVE you!

They called me on Monday during work and I just happened to see my phone ring. Nancy is the middle easterner's name she used with me. I immediately said I did not have a pay loan and she cut me off by providing me with my address, phone number, employer, last 4 of my social and account number and saying "how could I not remember since it was my money" and "Instant Cash does not want to talk to me since they handed it over to the law firm." She told me I would get served at my place of residence and work by Wednesday morning if I did not settle out of court. I fell for it and had to leave work immediately to get a green dot card since she couldn't take a payment from my check account "since it was black listed because I was a defaulter " I had no idea what the card was and was confused on how to use it-the people at the store were giving me different directions then what Nancy had. I called back, Nancy transferred me over to "the accounting department" to give me directions on the dot card. They kept telling me "it's really very easy" and "tell them you left the reloadable card at home" I loaded it, gave her the info and called my sister to complain about what happened. She immediately told me it was a SCAM and I should call them back. I did, Nancy said my money would be refunded to my bank account in 15-20 days and as soon as she got off the phone she would report me to the sheriff. I called Baker and McKenzie and they confirmed the scam. I called Nancy back demanding my refund that day and asking to speak to the accounting department. She told me I would just have to wait and there was nothing that the accounting department could do. I made a report with my police department.
TODAY Nancy has the AUDACITY to call me from a 7 digit number saying she's at the SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. I immediately told her off and that they were reported with a case number and hung up. I called the original number from Monday, and GUESS WHO ANSWER'S THE PHONE! I asked for Nancy and when she asked who I was I gave her an alias and she said "This is Nancy" I replied with "Nancy, this is ______ I thought you were at the sheriff's department! buy something pretty with my money" and hung up.
DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM!!!

DO NOT PAY THEM.  This is a scam.  I know. They got me too and I actually paid it.  I found out it was a scam because the same people tried it AGAIN!!!!.  No legitimate debt collector will ask you to send untracable cash payments. And there is no legitimate debt collector that will have any knowledge of law enforcement coming to arrest you.  PERIOD!!!

To anyone reading this: This scam has become out of control with the bad economy and people turning to shady things like pay day loans to make ends meet.  Report anything like this to your state Attorney General office (every state has is on their website and most you can submit a complaint online).

I asked for a physical address to come a make the payment, and they said I had to either western union or get a greendot card and send it.
