I have been dealing with these people since monday. They told me I would be arrested on Tuesday if I did not pay them this large sum of money. They gave me 3 companies, cashnet usa, linkcash.com, and cashcall.com. I have called these companies and 2 of them do not deal in payday loans. These companies are aware of this scam also. Now they have given me until Wednesday am to pay it, funny huh?

I started recieving calls from 414-200-0259 yesterday. I didnt answer but got a voice mail from a John Williams. The only thing I could understand on the voice mail was his name and number. I called the number back and got an answer. I was told that I owed them money and would go to jail if I didnt pay it also that my license would be suspended for 2 years. I figured it was a scam so I told them my lawyer would be in touch with them and they asked for my lawyers number so they could fax him the information. When I wouldnt give them the number they told me I would receive documents in the mail and I would go to jail if I didnt pay it. I too googled the number and found all this. Just thought I would share my story.

My job called me last night and told me that a guy by the name of John Williams had called for me and I needed to get right back to him because it was an emergency. I called the number back and it rang and then complete silence. I thought maybe it was some sort of bill collecter so I googled the number to find out who it belonged to and I read all this crazy stuff about them. Thank God because they probably would have had me paying them some money. Any how my husband finally got ahold of someone and told them to stop calling and we knew they were a scam. The guy got so angry and started to threaten us telling us he was putting a bomb under our car and that we better not leave the house. He said my husband was going to be shot down by an AK-47. We recorded the phone call and called the police who came over and are going to contact the FBI. But truely there is nothing they can really do but look into it. These people are very smart and are using ghost numbers or pre-paid phones, or even stealing other peoples phone numbers for short periods. These people are crazy and need to be stopped. I just hope people don't fall for their scams....

Debt Collector
Exactly.

Their lack of knowledge of FDCPA laws as well as excuses for being "unable" to validate the alledged debts they are calling about never cease to amaze me.

From: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-904-425-9141:

It's a scam, and all their threats are false and illegal.  The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal consumers' money.

Here are a few news reports and government advisories warning consumers about this scam:

ABC News:  http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=5621205&page=1
West Virginia Attorney General:  http://www.wvago.gov/internetloanscam.cfm
WTAE TV4, Pittsburgh:  http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/call4action/17285785/detail.html
Florida Commissioner of Consumer Services:  http://www.800helpfla.com/newsletter/2008/092008.html

This is a very active group of scammers, many of whom are calling from India (and probably other countries) and are in cahoots with a group of American pay day loan scammers. They attempt to extort money from consumers with a myriad of false and illegal threats, and alternately pose as debt collectors, federal and state law enforcement officers, lawyers and bankers. Their trademark is to use meaningless legalese gobbylgook phrases like "We are downloading warrants against you" or "We are filing an affidavit against you." Another trademark phrase is to threaten the consumer with something like this ridiculous phrase: "If you don't pay then only God can help you."

Typical of many financial scams of this variety, they usually demand payment via Western Union or MoneyGram or credit card. They use any number of phony names such as US National Bank, Federal Investigation Bureau, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Christian Nicholas & Associates, US Federal Bank, Sonic Bank, Hopkins Law Office, CashNet, United Legal Processing, Morgan Associates, United Pay Services, National Processing, White Collar Crime Unit and many more.  These criminals also use many phone numbers from many area codes; they're probably using caller-id spoofing software and/or VoIP to disguise their real location.

The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, or demanding your lawyer's name so they can sue you, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) And since these foreign dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement, it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection.  (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)

A consumer posting a complaint about these same scammers at http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-831-7157 notes that 718-831-7157 is associated with an India-based "outsourcing" telephone bank.  Though a reverse search on WhitePages.com shows that 718-831-7157 is an unlisted land line in New York City, information on Debtbuyers.Com shows that that number is used by India-based Intellisourze. (Source: http://www.debtbuyers.com/debtbuyers.asp ) My guess is that it's a VoIP phone number.

This is another piece of the puzzle that fits in perfectly with other information about this scam. There are some reports on 800Notes that have suggested that the crooks behind this offshore scam are also the crooks behind the notorious Bass/Ellis Crosby & Assoc./States Predisposition scams in Florida and Georgia. The interesting thing is that the number of complaints on here about the US National Bank/US Legal Investigation/Federal Investigation scam skyrocketed *after* April 7, 2008 when Florida obtained a $1.3 million judgment against Ted Ellis Crosby, shutdown his operations and barred him from ever conducting debt collections in Florida (
http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsrel ... 5257424005858A6 )  There's certainly a good chance that the crooks placing these calls from India are doing so on behalf of the American crooks behind the Crosby/Bass/States Predisposition scams.

Here's the contact information for the phone bank in India:

IntellisOurzE BPO
701, Sapphier, Nr. Cargo Motors,
C.G. Road Navrangpura,
Ahmedabad - 9. (Guj.) INDIA.
E-Mail: info@intellisourze.com
Website: www.intellisourze.com

A check on the domain name "intellisourze.com" shows that the website and name registration was created on May 8, just one month *after* the Crosby scams were shut down in Florida:

Domain Name: INTELLISOURZE.COM
Registrant:  Pragra Infratech Pvt. Limited.
Email:  ankur.ranpariya@pragra.com
908, Aksaht Tower, Nr. ICICI Bank
Opp. Rajpath Club, S.G. Highway
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India 380054
Tel. +91.7926871353
Creation Date: 08-May-2008
Expiration Date: 08-May-2009
Domain servers in listed order: ns5.znetindia.com ns4.znetindia.com
(Source: http://whois.domaintools.com/intellisourze.com )

Though scam calls from these crooks have been going on long before May 8, the frequency of complaints about these calls increased considerably after Crosby was shut down in early April.

This is conjecture, but appearances suggest that Crosby and company were originally running a two-pronged payday loan scam operation -- with some calls being made from Jacksonville, Florida and other calls being made from a phone bank in India (and possibly other countries); then, after the Florida Attorney General shut down the Crosby scams in Florida, the Crosby crooks transferred most of their scam efforts to the India phone bank.

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):

1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.

3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.

4) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

5) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a *small* sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

I received a call from a woman with a thick accent two weeks ago. She said her name was Jennifer and she gave me a call back number. She said I had to call her immediately upon getting the message, that is was extremely time sensitive or I should have my "retained" attorney call her. She then said that if I didn't call back she could only wish me good luck and then she got angry and spoke so loudly and quickly that I couldn't make out what she said. I did call the number back and all it said was, "Were sorry the number you are trying to reach is not available." I thought it was because I starred 67'd it so that I couldn't be traced back. When I thought about it later, I realized she didn't give me a compnay name or any identifying information. A valid collection agency should let you know who they are. Not just a first name of an employee.

Today, I got the same phone call. I called the number she gave me today which was 415-200-0259, without the star 67, but there was complete silence on the phone line. No ringing, no dial tone, nothing. I just sat there for a minute to see if something would happen. Then I hung up, and I tried calling again. The same thing happened, which was that I didn't hear anything on the phone line.

This same company called me trying to extort money from me.  A friend of my sister in Topeka had the same call from the same phone # a week ago so I knew about this thing.  The woman who called, "Leeza", tried to be threatening, saying I would be arrested, etc.  I turned the tables and started talking dirty to her.  For every threat she had I told her what I was going to do.  You get the drift. I asked if she would be the one who showed up with the handcuffs, and, well, I was really, REALLY dirty with her with everything she said.  I even embarrassed myself.  She finally said I was a sick man and hung up on me.  I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

So they called again and it was Lisa (or Alicia) wright.  Very thick thick accent.  Could hardly understand her.  She told me that I owed money to cashnet and they would come and arrest me and I would have to go to court.  Plus she had my 2 references (although not quite the correct names) and said that they would have to go too and "how do you like that".  i let her ramble on and on and she asked what I was going to do to resolve this debt.  I finally interuppted and asked who the law office was and she said law offices of cashnet.  I told her that it was a good try but they called me a few weeks ago with a different number and tried the same thing.  I told her I have reported them to the attorney generals office and I would report again with this number.  She said do whatever you want - its your life and you may have to go to jail.  I said I would take my chances.  I told her they werent too smart to try the same technique that they used a few weeks ago.  We will see if they call back - last time I told them I reported them then they called back swearing at me.  So we will see!!  Be careful though - they had ALL my info.  Thank goodness I have a different bank account now and thankfully I have moved!!!  But they had all my info

Well Monday night I had a message on my voicemail to call Lisa Wright back.  no agency name or anything.  She stated it was time sensitive.  She called again Tuesday and left a voicemail stating I needed to call her back immediately.  So this morning I tried calling, 7am my time (EST), and I got a machine that said this pager number is not working.  Strange.  Anyway - I had a problem like this a few weeks ago with the number of 818-338-5046 - same scenario.  And the message that was left yesterday on my V.M sounded exactly like the one from that number a couple weeks ago.  Bizarre.  I got rid of the other company by telling them that I reported them.  Then they kept calling me and swearing at me but it finally stopped - now its a whole new number!  UGH!  Will keep you all updated.  Thanks

I got a call from a Michael Steven with a law firm stating that I needed to pay off a payday loan that was never paid off or I needed to get my lawyer's information to them so they can file suit on me. I couldn't remember if I had gotten a payday loan with cash net or not. He had a very heavy indian accent. He wanted me to fax him a letter stating when I would pay off the loan and my credit card information. I gave him my credit card information but I had not sent in my letter. I was about to fax them the letter when I wanted to check out if this was correct or not. Thank GOD I did check it out. I will just not answer them anymore.
