NEVER allow remote access to anyone unless YOU have called them first and you know they are legitimate. Windows and Windows Partners do NOT call you unless you have called them first. What these scammers want to do is get access to your computer - they can steal your information from the computer, they can place malware or viruses on the computer, they can even make your computer into a "bot" so it sends out spam/scam. Since the caller is a scammer, no, he is not legal. Just tell him you know he's a scammer and you've reported him to the FBI. Whatever you do, do NOT give him remote access to your computer!
| Elspeth 2013-09-04 19:11:36 Unknown |
They told you to remove the Windows Genuine Advantage, because this program would automatically know they were downloading malware, viruses or non-genuine Windows programs to your computer. Never give remote access to your computer to someone who calls you out of the blue. No one can tell if your computer is sending out viruses, unless someone is actually working on your computer. Microsoft/Windows Partners do NOT call you unless you have called them first to ask for help.

I got a call from a women with a very thick Indian accent named "Stacy White" at Gooseberry. She stated that Windows had sent a ping out regarding a very dangerous virus. She asked me to help her find the source of the ping so that they could trace it and have the authorities notified. I told her I was not comfortable giving her any information at which time "Stacy" got very hostile and demanded I assist her with this. The call came up as having come from IHORSE. I like others went online and found this site.

Got the same call as described. Indian Male, could not understand the company name but he didnt want to spend alot of time talking about that. The first time I told him I have a Mac and he said that he had been given the wrong information and hung up. I checked the caller ID 415-424-4032 and called him back. He wanted me to search my error viewer under manage computer. I told him there were none and he tried transferring me to his senior tech. I hung up, they called back 30 seconds later. Very strange.

I received this call on my cell phone yesterday while I was at work. The person on the other end had a foreign accent and told I had a computer virus. I asked who was calling was and were he was calling from;however he talked so fast I could not get his name or the company name. I replied BS and hung up. I got home later that day and logged on. my computer., I noticed that I had an e-mail from my sister's e-mail address that looked funny. There was a link in the e-mail and I knew it was not her and that she apparently got hacked.

No, they cannot help you. They are scammers, see here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx
If you have actual issues, contact MS or run something like hijackthis, etc. to remove any virus or spy/malware.

I got the call today while I was out of my office. Then when I returned home, I could not log into my computer. It rejected my password. I called and they had me open in safe mode and then took control of my computer. I saw tons of windows saying infected and stopped on my files. The whole time I am feeling uneasy, but I watched and listened.
Then, the caller told me that it would be $199 to reload all my software and drivers. I need to know if my computer is really infected or if there is another fix. I am in safe mode and should be able to fix it but if I know where to go. My caller was Don Ald at extension 2003

Well my father keeps getting these calls for probably a
month now. He 's not really technologically advanced so I
had to do my research of the call . They call him and they
know his name. They ask about his computer and that there
are issues with it. Well, our computer was very virusy so we
took it to a place to get awhile ago before the calls started we had the entire computer wiped out so we
could start anew. There were ads popping up and there was
an antivirus software. Lately there have been ads popping up
and fake anti virus software saying that everything is wrong
with our computer and that all the drivers are not properly installed. This denies us access to open some applications with the pop up. Everytime the computer turns on, a black
box appears quickly then disappears. I try to delete virus but
there are countless folders of dftblahblah garbage.
know how they know we have viruses. It must be some huge secheme. I asked my dad if he entered his personal info into
the pop up, he told me no. I don't know how they know that
information about him. It is a scam and the calls are not
stopping. Smart HDD or or the other strange viruses on the
computer need to get rid of but I am not paying to be ripped
off. They did it to our computer somehow.

I got a call at about 0750 local this morning from this number. Caller, with an Indian or Middle Eastern accent, asked for me by name. I asked what the call was in reference to. He said something about a problem with my computer. I told him he was full of s***, and this was a scam. I also told him I didn't believe he was actually in the United States, to which he replied he was in Oakland, CA. (I believe the Area Code for SF is 415, but isn't there a separate Area Code for the East Bay?). I told the guy I didn't have time for his bull**** and hung up. It will be interesting to see if we receive additional calls.

They ask for me by name and tell me that my computer is having problems. "Are you at your computer"? Then want me to log on. THERE IS NO ONE OUT THERE KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR COMPUTER FOR YOU!!! If you log on, and follow instructions, someone will own your computer. Accent does sound Indian/Pakistani, just hang up. They get your name and ph. # from some info you have given on line. Who knows where? :) Stay safe

Yes, received a call from this number this morning at 9:30am... usually do not answer calls from unknown long distance numbers but thought, "What the heck... let's see who wants what today!".
They said they were from Gooseberry Tech and said I had a networking issue. Being computer literate and knowing that I did not have a networking issue (was networking my computers as I spoke to the Indian accented man), I started to ask more questions than he was asking... he did not actually answering any of them (was enjoying this call!). He was trying to direct me to my computer... so I asked which one. He said the windows based computer... I said they are all windows based computers and surely you know which computer is the issue. I said that you windows based computer was a safe answer since 90% of all personal computers are windows based! I kept asking who told them I had a networking issue... the response was "Microsoft". I basically told him that he was full of crap... he politely said thank you and goodbye.
I immediately looked up GOOSEBERRY TECH and confirmed that it was indeed a scam.
I can see how a casual user could get scammed by this... because I did have networking issues months ago to which I needed some online forum discussion to solve my problem. In the first two sentences spoken by this man... it made me think for a split second, was this in response to something I had asked earlier. Note: ONLY A SPLIT SECOND, did I have a lapse in judgement!
Don't give anybody access to your computer that you haven't asked first!
