I keep receiving calls from this number claiming they are representing someone with legal action against me. They wanted me to call back but of course I will not. I believe this is the same outfit that possibly hacked into my bank account some time ago. I have changed my info and now do not do business unless I am sure it is a secure site.

Received a call from David Cooper, attorney
Received a call from John Anderson , attorney
Both from this number. Heavy foreign accents stating  I had gone against Federal Bank  Regulations in a loanof $545.37 with EZ Cash Inc. I could pay up immediately with him or go to court in California with a fine up to $6000.
They both had all my personal information inc. relatives`s names, social security no., check account no. and bank, and credit card no.
They asked me what I wanted to do do. I said I want to see this in writing and was told it is a paperless account. They said my employer would be notified and  and I would receive a warning at my door Monday 10/25.
I do not have or have I taken any loans but the fact that all the pertinent personal info is known makes me wonder what will happen net..

I received several calls back to back and immediately asked for the "attorney's", as he identifed himself, bar association number as he said he was Dan Hunter from California. I had him wait while I looked him up on the California Bar Association's website and, of course, the number he provided was bogus. I took a payday loan out last year that was repaid so I guess that's where the obtained my information.  All the operators that phoned me couldn't tell me what law firm they were calling from, one gave Ray Carter and Associates, on the CA Bar Association website there were Ray Carters listed, one was deceased and the other inactive.

This number (John Anderson, thick foreign accent) has called 6 times in less than 24 hours and leaves a message that I "must call"; not to ignore the call and proceeds to leave a veiled threat, such as, "If you do not call me back, all I can do is wish you. . . Good Luck."  Same message, word for word every time.  I called back about half an hour ago and said someone keeps calling from this number and he (not such a thick foreign accent) asked for personal information. I said, "I'm not giving you any personal information because I think this is a scam." He hung up on me and when I called back, it rang many times, an automated voice answered and said the number was not accepting messages.  I just filed a complaint with the FTC.  I called the number again (blocked my number) and a person with very thick accent answered and when I told him I just filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission he started saying ridiculous things like, "Oh, so you want to file a complaint against who? Your husband, your boss, your daughter?  We charge you $10, we take visa and started laughing and said, "We don't have time for your complaints." I told him he had time to call and harrass people.  He laughed and hung up.  I have taken out payday loans but have paid them back.  I'm behind on my student loan and have paid bills late.  I think these people are preying on people with bad credit.  I think something I filled out during the summer (to see if I could get a longer-term, multi-payment loan) is out there in Cyber space and that is exactly what they are doing is trying to scare and take advantage of people they see as vulnerable.

I got this call at work today. Saying I was being prosecuted for check fraud and I supposedly did this payday loan and all this stuff. I had no idea what this man was talking about, but he honestly scared me. I'm so upset, now that I found out that this is a scam, when talking to this man I confirmed my name, work place, e-mail address, and who I bank with, oh and also the last four of my social. How did they get all my information?! What do I do now?

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden ? Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
?    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
?    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
?    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
?    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

Hi Bill:

In response to your post:  Apparently, someone in your neighborhood had previously taken out a payday loan which they did not repay.  What these collectors do after they cannot contact the person or their referrals used, is they will call any neighbor associated with the address they have on hand.

The only thing you can do is file a complaint with your local Attorney General's Office, but since these people do not leave a business name or address, it might be difficult for the AGO to contact them.

Now, for some updated information.  This collection agency is calling on behalf of a web based payday loan company.  Biggest Cash is a web based payday loan company that utilizes this collection company.  I had a web based loan with them, that was settled thru a counseling agency, and Biggest Cash would not accept the offer.

The best advise to offer is:  Submit a complaint to your local Attorney General's Office.  You must submit the name and address of the payday loan that you borrowed from.  You will need to give them the amount borrowed and any amounts paid back, including the dates.  In your complaint, you must give the name, dates and times of the calls being received from this John Anderson.  Also explain the comments he is leaving.

I hope this helps somewhat.  Well, as John Anderson says "Good Luck, and God Bless"!!!

John Anderson calls me as well.  When I called back, some other guy with an accent said his name was Kevin, a paralegal representing Attorney James Parker.  I asked for their company name and address,  and he wanted to know why I wanted this information.  I politely explained that I retained an attorney as per Mr Andersons instructions, and my attorney would like to contact them.  Well, Mr Kevin was not happy with this...and said "I NO GIVE YOU ADDRESS....YOU TELL ATTORNEY TO CALL"!  lollllll

This number has been calling everyday, several times a day stating I am being charged with check fraud because they deposited $500 in my account and when they tried to get the funds back they couldn't and I need to have my attorney call them immediately before October 21st or I am going to be arrested and they are going to call my job and let them know what kind of person I am. After reaading the messages above I believe that this is a scam.

This company is getting very sneaky. I work from home and my line is busy all day. They are now doing Emergency break through on my line. This could cost me my job and they are not even calling for me. I have learned how you can block the number on your land line. If you dial *60 you can turn you call screening feature on and off  on option 1 and then on option 2 you can add numbers to block. I have tried talking to my local police and since they do not opporate on US soil there is nothing they can do.

This is a total scam that has been going on for a few years now.  PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION AND DEFINITELY TO THAT PAY THEM ONE DOLLAR.   I have been receiving calls exactly like this from this #.  Plus every  couple months they change their # but it's still the same people with heavy indian accents with basic American names threating jail, loss of job, etc.

My advice is to just ignore them to save yourself headache.

This person called and left a message on my voice mail and sounded as though he was from India and said his name is John Anderson.  He told me that the minute I heard his call that I better call him back asap or else bad things could happen to me. He said that I will call him back unless I know what is good for me.  He also said; "you take care becasue you are going to need it" He kept making those types of comments. He called and left  this same message 3 times from 9:10 am-10:26 am. I left him a message advising him that his call is now permissable in court as he knew that he was being recorded and that he should use his real name if he is going to leave threatning messages and to be a real man and not hide behind his fake name. I will not call anyone back that leaves a fake name and no name of the company they are calling from. I also advised him that in the state of Florida that he was breaking the privacy act law/credit laws. You cannot leave this type of message with the persons name. You can leave your name and ph# but you cannot divulge this info. Seedy credit agencies will do this. If they left their name and # then they would be out of business.
