I hung up immediately, then called back and was given the option to have my number added to their do not call list, so I did. We'll see if this comes to fruition.

It costs them nothing if you don't answer, a computer makes the calls. It costs them almost nothing if you answer and tell them to f*** off: 5 seconds of someones time who is used to this kind of abuse. They probably expect that out of 10,000 calls they find perhaps one sucker. In may opinion the only way to get back at them is to make it more expensive to find that one sucker.
This means you have to invest a little effort:
** Play along and pretend that you are interested!
** After stringing them along for a few minutes tell them that you are getting the paperwork or that someone is at the door, etc. Put the phone on mute and keep checking how long it takes them to hang up.
** If you are bored and have a lot of time on your hands you can make it a game to try to waste as much of THEIR TIME as possible, just be sure to NEVER give them you real credit card number. Please spread this message!

It seems to me that, if you have call display and recognize a telephone number as foreign to your area, toll free or otherwise unwanted, the worst thing you can do is answer it, even if you subsequently just hang up or tell him or her off (they have thick skins and are accustomed to that). It's probably like unwelcome spam on your computer; if you acknowledge it, the spammer knows that it's a 'live' line. Let it go, even if curious. Give the impression that the annoying caller is batting his head against a wall.

Unfortunately for Canadians on the government's 'Do Not Call List,' nothing can be done about calls from elsewhere. There are actually some exceptions contained in the law as well. Not everthing unwanted is banned.

I have no idea why this number is calling me. Furthermore, when I answer all I can hear is a beep. I am also on the Don't Call list.

Just received a call from this number in Seattle for debt management. I am in Canada on a DNCL. I guess they don't care if it's a Canadian DNCL.

Yes it is stupid, but you can reduce these calls. Hang up and by using your *60, then #01#. Try it you will like this feature.
