Survey
I believe they want to conduct a brief survey regarding a recent visit to Ocean Dental. They called my house and then my cell. Medical agency's should not be handing my info to 3rd parties without my consent. I will continue to ignore these calls along with the multiple calls from credit card services...

Calls daily and nobody answers. Children are afraid of the "ghost" caller.
You are scaring the kids! You need to stop.
I believe they could be sex offenders and should register with Michigan State Police by law. So if you get a call form 440-397-6020, they are probably checking to see when your young children are home.

Survey
They called again after my UCLA annual checkup in 2011. I decided to answer this time and take the survey. First I spoke to a 'live' person and then was asked to continue with an automated question system. It took 12 minutes to go through all the questions. I like my doctor, so I decided to take the survey and give her a good rating.

Survey
I recently went for a sleep study at UCLA Med Center and I received a message yesterday telling me they were going to survey me about my experience with UCLA.  The message said they would call back at another time.   I deleted the number but I'm sure it was a local number.

Today I received a call but didn't answer the phone (didn't know the number 440-397-6020) so I didn't answer the phone.  They didn't leave a message.  I think it was the same folks!  I guess UCLA is conducting a quality control survey (as some have said) but this is a stupid way of doing it!  They should leave a call-back number so you can call them if you wish to take the survey.

At least I know its legit.  ATT used to call me all the time until I finally answered and asked them to quit!  They also had a really strange phone number, and they never left a message.

the same thing happened to me.  i too have doctors at UCLA.  this place has been calling me for a week during work hours.  i finally called: 440-526-8633   i spoke to the receptionist and after hearing why i was calling she said "i can remove you from the list."  she took my telephone number down and asked for my name.

i hope UCLA isn't paying for this place to do quality control!

i would love to rate my experience.

Called and said they were with 'UCLA Quality Data Management'. Weird they would be calling from Ohio. When I asked her what it was about, she said "we're taking your name off the list, bye". She didn't want to answer my questions regarding who the heck she was.

I DID have recent appointments at UCLA Medical Ctr. in Los Angeles.

What a waste of everyone's time and money and annoying too.

I guess UCLA has money to blow on surveys to check up on their doctors. No wonder it's so expensive to use their facilities.

So how am I supposed to know if they are legitimate? They call me repeatedly and never leave a message. That doesn't sound like the way a legitimate business works. How can I be sure that they're not pretexters?

If my hospital wants information from me, they can send me a form to be filled out. I know their address, so I can be sure it's going to the right place.

How can I believe that their web site is truthful? Having a web site doesn't prove anything.

How do I know that you're not working for them and being just a little critical so we won't catch on? That's an old trick.

(PS: I never "Google" anything. I do a web search.)

Survey
I received a call from this number today, and did not answer it either. No message.

After finding this discussion board, and reading through people's various comments, I did a little Googling. Hopefully the following will help alleviate concerns about this call coming from someone creepy or sketchy.

I recognized the 440 area-code as being from the Cleveland suburbs. I also am in the business of consumer research, and am familiar with standard consumer marketing research practices.

I believe this is a call coming from Quality Data Management (as others have previously identified), a legitimate Survey Research call center that conducts Patient Satisfaction surveys for various hospitals, patient care centers, and other medical facilities to measure ongoing performance (quality, value, outcomes).

Their website is www.qdmnet.com. Their phone number is listed on the website.

In all likelihood, they got your number / name from a randomized list of patients that have been serviced by a medical / hospital group. The list might have been purchased (name, number, hospital name) or the hospital itself might have directly hired QDM to perform research and gather data / report on various metrics to assist in the improvement of the quality and delivery of health-care services.

With research like this, personal info such as name/phone is often separated from response data to maintain anonymity. However, depending on the facility and the nature of the research, sometimes individuals who have reported negative feedback are contacted in an effort to rectify the situation.

Most hospital / medical forms and paperwork contain a clause about HIPPA, however I believe that using personal information for the purposes of "quality assessment" and "provider evaluation" is considered to be categorized under "health care operations" and so does not require an explicit signature authorizing use. However I have seen some medical facilities request a separate signature to authorize the use of patient data to improve services.

I am surprised that they wouldn't ask to speak to the parent or guardian of the 10 year old or other minor, but perhaps they don't have that instruction / allowance built into their survey. The person on the other end of the phone is given a very specific set of instructions, as these surveys are usually very rigid and do not allow for responses that are outside the parameters of the questionnaire. By it's nature the rigidity doesn't create a friendly conversation, but it is necessary as they are trying to collect statistically significant data.

Typically with call centers, the phone that is calling is not connected to a specific number - rather all outgoing calls appear to come from a general number that does not correspond to an incoming phone line. It is like when you get an email from an email address that says "no-reply". Which is why when you call back, you get a dead line.

More info on QDM's survey process: http://qdmnet.com/qdm/ps_fs.html

The purpose for this research is likely to gather patient feedback for the following product / service type (as quoted from the website directly):

Clinical Value Compass

Aim: To provide healthcare leaders, at multiple levels of a healthcare delivery system, with a sound model for measuring and improving the quality and value of health care.

Target: Patient Outcomes & Clinical Care Processes

Called back but phone not even ringing - and now that I'm reading other posts, I have to add that my son recently had his appendix out. . . . . .if they are genuinely concerned for my son's safety and care, they were welcome to pay him a visit in the hospital - as I'm sure this could help find kids who do need intervention.

Same thing calling asking for parent of a child who was recently in a hospital.  Is someone from the hospital breaking HIPPA laws and giving out this information and why?  They refused to identify themselves and would not give the number to their agency, called Quality Data Management from Ohio, and said they would give the number to the Hospital.

Question is something we sign when we or our family member enters the hospital give them permission to release this information to a third party quality control company, if so is that a HIPPA violation?

Didn't answer and just like some of the others I tried to call back but there is no dial tone.  Wierd though because 440 area code is very close to where I live so I thought it was a relevant call. Guess not.
