lol to gregory...maybe the your phone number used to be who they were looking for???? OMG that took alot of thiking to figure that one out..And I would bet my paycheck that there is more than one agency looking for this guy....

News flash...just because your upset over the phone call you received doesnt mean the person who is calling you makes mininum wage..Debt collectors make anywhere from 30-100,000 a year..Now to make 100,000 a year you are one of the best but this is not for everybody. Not every collector handles the conversation the same way.. There is alot of idiots out there the make the rest of us look bad..I guess I should apologize for trying to provide for my family...sorry...

Have received several calls from them. It is Paramount and they want me to call them back IF I am Linda, that they have an important issues to discuss with me. I don't give out my cell number so I'm sure they got it through some 'legal' program to invade personal space. They have always been polite in leaving messages but I know that is to get me to return a call.
I don't know what they want and I am not calling them to find out. They call at least once a day.
ALSO we changed our land line service and opted to get a new number which is unlisted and unpublished BUT it only took them a couple of weeks to get it..........how did that happen? Smells rotten!

I hear you. Washington Mutual/CHASE Credit card didn't even wait until I was late or anything. Just increased my interest to over 30% and when I called I was told that during their routine check it was based on other considerations. Now doesn't that tell you absolutely nothing! I know it was because my son and family lost their home and I was on the mortgage. So he looses his job and his home and the credit card company says "Ah that's so sad so lets triple your interest rate and really screw you!" They would NOT work with me, so I stopped paying and now they actually have a reason to complain.
Same thing with GE Money Bank...over doubled my Dillard's interest after 30+ years of NEVER missing a payment and doing most of my shopping with them....same story so I cut my Platinum Dillards card up and threw the bills in the trash. Quit paying.
Banks get billions in 'our' money and what do they do? Screw us. I'm done. I don't care anymore.

all collectors threaten legal action but this is to try and scar you into paying the bill.  The collector will get a percentage from the money they collect.  I use to do investigations for a collection agency.  the only way they will sue is if the amount is over a certain amount and you have assests where they can place a lean against your property until you pay the bill off.

I've dealt with these people for years and have learned the game.  Here's the deal:

1.  As one of the previous contributors stated, there's HUGE money in the collections business.  So these scumbags are going to do whatever it takes to pressure people to pay, including, calling / threatening you, your family members, ex-spouses, even your neighbors, even if it skirts the edge, or crosses the line of being legal.  It’s a reality of life that some people will do most anything when there’s money involved, including being mean, hateful, threatening a**holes.

2.  It doesn't matter that your land line is unlisted or non-published, or that you've never given them your mobile number or if you’ve been divorced for 100 years!  There are many on-line services that conveniently provide that information for a fee.  And guess what, folks?  Collection agencies gladly pay those fees to obtain your personal information because they know that, most of the time, their scare tactics make people pay.  So paying the relatively small fee to get your personal information is well worth it to them because it's a pittance, compared to the large amount of money that they know they'll collect.

3.  What can you do about it?

If you owe money, then you owe money.  However, there are very specific laws that govern the practice of debt collection.  TAKE CONTROL BY KNOWING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS.  Collection agencies know and exploit the fact that most people don’t know their rights.  They take full advantage of that through the threats and other scare tactics they use.  Most of that is just a smoke screen.  It’s bu***hit, but they know that scaring people into paying actually does work.  That’s the reason they do it!  If you know your legal rights, then they can’t make you feel like a victim.  I’m not an attorney but I know some of the legal aspects of this.  Here are some of the highlights:

Upon your request, a debt collector must disclose to you who they are, the purpose of the call AND produce written proof of the debt that they claim you owe.  You must request this information, otherwise they won’t voluntarily furnish it.  If they refuse to do any of these, which they probably will, then just tell them that, by law, they must or they’ll get jack s**t from you.  If they persist, you can either calmly state that you know your rights and they must comply or just simply hang up.  They thrive on threats, abuse and making debtors feel like they’re scum.  Why?  Because they know it works.  Remember, just because a person has debt and these monkeys use nasty tactics, doesn’t mean that you have to accept the abuse that they dish out along with it.

You can stop the phone calls.  By law, they must cease all phone contact, if you request it.  But you must request it.  It’s best to request it both by phone and in writing, sending the letter as certified with return receipt.  That way, you have proof of delivery if they deny receiving it, which they’ll probably do.  Again, they thrive on such scare tactics and smoke screens.  Once you do that, by law, they can no longer contact you by phone.  There is a lag time between your request and cessation of calls, but I’m not sure exactly how long.  Threatening letters may still continue, but at least you’ll have peace of mind when your phone rings.  If they continue to call after your request, they’re subject to some pretty steep fines.  So report them.  I believe it’s either the Secretary of State or the Federal Trade Commission that handles that.  If not, they can probably refer you to the correct authority.

Once all of that is done, they must accept reasonable payment arrangements.  They will try to squeeze you dry.  You can count on it.  So know how much you can afford and stick to it.  Tell them this is the amount you’re able and willing to pay and if they don’t accept it then they get nothing.  Remember, in the end, they’d rather have some money from you than none at all.  If you “show willingness” to pay something, they’re more likely to accept your offer.  They’ll try, but don’t let them bully you into paying more than you can afford.  Mind you, they may still be able to take legal action to obtain more money, such as wage garnishment, property liens, etc.  In cases like this, you should obtain legal advice.  There are some very reputable, free legal clinics out there.  Some are sponsored by local law schools or non-profit organizations.

These are just some of the highlights.  Check around to find out more.  While knowing your rights won’t resolve your debt, it will level the field so you can play hardball with them and stand your ground if necessary.  There’s a saying, “Life ain’t fair, people don’t act right and you can count on both.”  While that may be true in this case, you don’t have to accept the abuse along with your debt.
Hope this helps.  Good luck!

My boss got a call today from Mathew Simpson of Paramount. He was very pushy and kept asking when he would return, he hadn't returned calls, and he had to speak with him today!! Before he could even ask, I asked him for the "reference number" and asked what company he was calling from.  He was actually dumbfounded that I was asking these questions, but knew he had to provide the company name, which is Paramount. He asked for my boss, when I told him he was out for the day, he asked for the "manager."  I told him I was his "legal assistant" and if I could help him.  I calmly informed him that I could pass along a message, and in between his rants and raves, I got two telephone numbers from him.  One is (513) 332, 0032, ext 36, and (877) 336-6577, ext. 36.  So if you see either of these numbers, just know it's Paramount, a collection agency.

If you inform a collection caller that they have the wrong number and advise them to remove you from their list, by law, they must.   Also, collection agency are not allowed to contact you at work.  If they do, advise them of this (they already know it).  If the calls continue, keep a written log of each and every time, and if warranted, advise them that you are keep tracking and if the calls continue in a harrassing manner, you will contact the District Attorney's Office and/or local police about filing telephone harassment charges.

Hope this helps others.

I don't really care how many times these people call, but when they call my 60 year old pare t's and harrass them or call friends I haven't seen in 10 years, or call my work place over a less than $400 debt that my ex wife was supposed to pay 4 years ago it gets annoying.

Woman called from this number saying that I was in a "complaint" filed with them and said I should give them a call back.  From the sounds of what other people are saying, this is just their sneaky way of getting you to call and pay something based on fear, likely using illegal tactics such as not disclosing that it's an attempt to collect a debt.

Hey, Mr. Smartguy!

They can't harass if you have filed a chapter 7!  If they persist, they will be reported to federal authorities for violating a chapter 7 and guess what---THEY will have to pay the money!  Walk a mile in someone's shoes who obviously doesn't lead a perfect life like you do!

Called and told me about a delinquent account for my husband.  I advised her that he wasn't home and that she should call back when he was home.  I told her that we keep our finances separate and that I had just left the doctor and was supposed to stay in bed so that I couldn't get up search for a pen to write down her number.  She didn't believe either (true) claim and said that neither were believable.  She threatened legal action.

I also received a call from Mrs Thompson and that I should "voluntarily" call her back. She didn't want to bother me at work. That's funny, because I work from home and this I'm sure is the only number they have on file for me. If this credit card company hadn't SCREWED me over when I was ONE day late (by upping my percentage to the full 29.9999999% which at least DOUBLED what my normal payment was) I would be happy to pay. I asked them to work with me but they won't. I already paid off my debt in interest alone anyway. Write me off! LOL

I have been getting missed calls on my cellphone from a 513 area code number. This time around, someone in a very sweet voice left a voicemail message addressed me by my first name (which I state in my voicemail message greeting) and identified himself as Ben but did not say from what company. He said it is urgent he talks to me and gave an  8773366577 (ext 21) number to call back.

It sounds like a scam because why would he not identify the company he's calling from; I also do not have any outstanding debt that has not been paid nor am I late on any monthly payment (I AM QUITE OCD about making payments and keeping my finances in order) so it can't be a real collections call.

Any idea who these guys are? I don't want to call back because it has bogus and scam written all over it.

Thanks!
