Debt Collector
this number 513-824-8966 called my wifes phone. when i called them back they stated that i have a outstanding payday loan with cashnet.  said they were from the fraud unit and that i had 3 felony charges pending and if i didnt pay the full amount that they would file charges with my local county and they would send out a 48 hour pick up and i would have to sit in jail. they never asked for my address. never sent me no paper work.  i called my county D.A. and explained the above and they said they cannot file charges for not paying a payday loan back.  also received a call from 832-266-0575. all the people i talked to referred to themselves as investigators or officers and said they work for the D.A. to collect enough evidence to file against me.  i believe this is a scam!!!!!  they also stated that their company name was United Services.

I found this on the net.....  Interesting

Failing to pay a loan is not punishable by arrest. In fact, threatening to have someone arrested for not paying a loan is illegal. These scammers are trying use intimidation to trick their victims into giving them money. Here are some tips to help you protect your money:
?If a scammer using this scam approaches you, or if you?ve already fallen victim, contact local law enforcement and file a complaint with NCL?s Fraud Center at www.fraud.org.  Law enforcement agencies need every lead they can get to arrest these criminals.
?By stealing your personal information, the scammers have also committed identity theft.  The FTC has tips for what you can do if you are a victim of identity theft: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/consumers/defend.html
?Be wary when applying for payday loans via the Internet. Not only do you risk exposing your personal information to criminals, online loans typically have higher fees and interest rates than loans applied for offline
?Tell the scammers to only contact you by mail and to provide written proof of the debt in question. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires debt collectors to stop calling their targets if they are asked to do so.
?Scammers often claim to represent official-sounding law enforcement agencies or financial institutions.  If you receive call from someone claiming to be from such an organization, hang up and call the organization in question directly.
?Consumers cannot be arrested for failing to pay a loan
?If you are insure whether you are delinquent on a payday loan, contact to lender directly to inquire about the status of your account.
?Some scammers set up fake phone numbers and email addresses to trick savvy consumers into dismissing their suspicions as paranoia.  Look up phone numbers or email addresses for lenders on your own or, better yet, rely on your loan paperwork to find a legitimate contact number.
?If the scammer threatens you, call the police immediately.

513-266-0575 was from Jessica Torez for me too.  Same B.S.

She handed me off to another person who called herself Detective Mason at 832-266-0575.  Which is a Texas number.

I googled both numbers.  It looks like they are both pre-paid desposable cell phones.

Like stated earler today ( above ) I called both our local DA and Police Departments and they said it was a scam.

We will see.

Yes got a call form them today. It is a cell phone from Ohio. A reputable law firm is not going to use a cell phone.

Today was my first time getting a call from these people and she said she was from CSI and something about the fraud unit.. Then when I told her she had the wrong number she then said she would just tell the judge and she asked for my name and she has my home number as well... and the crazy part is my number is a new number. I have not given it out to anyone so I am wondering how did she randomly get my number and has never called before. What type of thing they are running.. When I called back her voicemail was you have reached the desk of robin wright who is that... I am not sure why she called me but hopefully they go on to the next person...

I got another call today from 832-266-0575 telling me that if i dont resolve this legal matter they will forward the case to my local athorities.  They would put out a 48 hour poickup on me.  Then i would have to retain an attorney to deal with the local matter.  She also said that she could not send me any infomation in the mail to varify who they are or what the spicifics they have to this case.

I called the District Attorney to see if they knew anything about a scam like this.  The person that i talked to indicated that it sounded like a scam  that they hear about every now and then.  She suggested that i just dont worry about it.

Next I called out local Police Department Non-Emergency number.  The person i talked to said it sounds like total BS.

Interesting.

got a call from this number yesterday.  When i called it back I asked what company I was talking to the person on the other end stumled a little and said she was with the fraud unit.  She said that i need to talk to the investigator.

When she forwarded my call to the investigator, the lady on the other end was very forcefull and used scare tactics.  She said that if i didnt make arangements to pay a past due bill from back in 2009 the would basically have the local police servie me papers.

I googled both the original number and the number that i was forwarded to...  513-824-8966 and 832-266-0575.  The first number is from a pay as you go cell phone from Ohio.  The second is from a pay as you go phone from Texas.

I returned a call to the second line and left a message.  I said i would be happy to pay and lagitimate outstanding bill that i might have overlooked.  I asked them to send me a copy of the original bill in the mail.

Havent heard back as of yet.

That is weird because when I traced the number back through the Ohio State Attorney's Office, it came back from some Law Firm for Brown & Robert.

I received the following voicemail today (both at my elderly parents' house and on my cell phone). The messages were nearly identical: "This message is for [First Name]. This is Amy Maxwell. I'm calling from the Fraud Investiations Unit. I've been appointed to handle the case filed against [First Name]. I need a return phone call regarding pending allegations at 513-824-8966. Failure to hear back from [First Name] will result in the office moving forward with legal actions. I do recommend [First Name] govern yourself accordingly during this investigation. However I do need a return phone call and a statement. Good luck."

I'm assuming this is a scam or a less than "on-the-up" organization. No company name was provided and while "Fraud Investiations Unit" sounds scary there MUST be a company name to which the unit belongs.  I've done a little Google investigation on the phone number and it shows up as a mobile number (if you were legit, wouldn't you be calling from a desk phone in an office instead of some throw-away cell phone number?)  It would also seem to me that if there were legit business needing to be done there would be certified mail on fancy stationary coming to my home.
