That would be fine if they would verify you are actually the person with the debt. The problem is they don't bother to do that and can garnish your wages within 30 days without verifying who you are. If the middle name and SSN are different, they have the wrong person.

Debt Collector
DCS has illegal tactics and multiple lawsuits, they tried collecting on a loan that was discharged in bankruptcy and just so you know DCS employees so you can put it in your scripts it IS possible to get a personal education loan discharged you just have to have the right circumstances. The lady that spoke to me was Leah Anderson she double talked the whole time and didn't know half of my information. At least be prepared if you are going to sound intelligent.

THEY CONTINUE TO CALL OVER AND OVER, AFTER I HAVE ASKED THEM TO PLEASE NOT CALL, I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY AT THIS TIME. EITH HALF OF AMERICA UNEMPLOYED OR CLOSE TO IT, I JUST CANT PAYAT THIS TIME. THE COLLECTOR WNT AS FAR AS TELLING ME TO GO OUT AND GET A JOB, AND ASKED ME HOW I PAID FOR MY PHONE BILL, AND CAR PAYMENT. TALK ABOUT NONE OF THERE BUSINESS.
THEY SHOULD ASK FOR A "BAIL OUT" WHY NOT THE GOVERMENT IS BAILING OUT EVERYONE ELSE. I WOULD THINK THIS SHOUL BE ON THE LIST TOO.
I HAVE PAID EVERY PAYMENT FOR 2 YEARS AND HAD MY LOAN DOW TO 8500, ANDNOW THEY SAY IT IS 20,000. THAT IS ROBBERY,TALK ABOUT HIGH INTREST.

It's funny how the DCS supporters here enjoy calling the people not paying their bills thieves, but don't acknowledge DCS's harrassment is theft of the valuable time (and therefore money) of uninvolved bystanders like neighbors or relatives.  Legal doesn't mean ethical, and stealing is stealing.  What hypocrites.

I have been called twice by DSC.  Unfortunately my husband has a very common name - like SMITH.  They are collecting on a student loan for someone of the same name.  He never had any student loan, never went to that school, etc.  But they won't accept that they have the wrong person.  And Brandon - in this day and age, you don't give out your social security number and date of birth to someone who cold calls you out of the blue.  Be honest.  They have the wrong person.  More honestly - why should I need to pay a lawyer to prove to them they are wrong?  Don't they need to prove they are right?  Aren't they supposed to send a letter?  Why are they harrassing honest people?

I can so relate to many of you people imagine having a Father by the name of JAMES BROWn and a Brother also a JAMES BROWN JR one named JOHN BROWN then go to sell something at a Pawn Shop to be told "We can not sell you anything nor buy from you due to the fact that the Police are looking for you due to theft" I laughed so hard I stated LOOK AT MY BIRTHDATE they were like OH I AM SORRY WE HAV THE WRONG LINDA BROWN even the Pharmacy WALGREENS HAVE 24 YES
TWENTY FOUR LINDA BROWNS diffferent Birthdates such a STRESSFUL THING to have such a COMMON NAME, So my advice? Ask them to give you YOUR BIRTHDATE AND ADDRESSES AND YOUR DOCTORS NSAME IF IT IS A PHARMACY IF it has anything to do Legally then ask for a BACKGROUND CHECK AT THEIR EXPENSE, It truly is such a MAJOR inconvenience, I also do PRISON MINISTRY ha ha try to PROVE you are not nor have ever been arrested for Murder, Drugs, Rape and soforth, Such a shame that we go through life not ven knowing someone can and DOES STEAL YOUR IDENTITY, I have a Sister in law well now EX Sister in law who STOLE ALL OF MY IDENTITY, BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU GET PHONE CALLS CLAIMING YOU ARE NOT WHO THEY CLAIM FOR YOU TO BE MAY GOD BE WITH YOU DO NOT GIVE UP PROVE WHO YOU ARE AND HAVE FAITH IN GOD.

My husband was Polish and had a very unusual name.  He died 3 years ago.  Now a man in Brooklyn with the SAME name has run up mountains of debt.  I keep getting calls from collection agencies, I am always civil, I explain the situation and I give my late husband's date of birth.  There is always a kind of stunned silence when they realize the dates don't match, but then they promise not to bother me again and hang up.
I don't have a major problem with agencies calling me.  I understand that this other man with my husband's name owes a bucketload of money and it seems like manna from heaven to have his name show up.  However, what I DO have a problem with are hang-up calls and incomplete displays on my caller id and no one actually talking to me.  Once I am spoken with, things are cleared up pretty quickly and they come to terms with the fact that my poor husband who has just been a pile of ashes for the past three years can hardly be running up any kind of debt.  They do, however, need to speak with me.

To Private, posted 23 Oct 2008; Brandon, posted 11 Apr. 2008, and MrPayByBills, posted 11 Nov 2008.

I have heard from the three of you that people need to look up DCS, and you took out the loan so pay up. I agree that payments should be made, the tactics in which collectors from DCS use to attain these payments are deceptive.I have looked up Diversified Collection Services and have found several lawsuits, which they lost, pertaining to the Fair debt Collections Practice Act. I have also researched their lobbying expenditures to the government agencies to be able to collect these debts. I also found they were indicted for illegal political contributions to government officials. I found the transcript of Jon D. Shaver, Chief Operating Officer of Diversified Collection Services testimony before the House Committee on Ways and Means to convince the government to allow them to collect these debts. From all this information DCS does not shine in a good light.

My great-grandfather received a phone call from a Ryan Stephens at number 888-310-2006 ext 3658. When my great-grandfather answered he claimed he was from the Treasury Department. LIE! he then threatened this 90 year-old WWII veteran that they were going to take money from him. He asked if it pertained to an issue that we are going through with the Veterans Affairs, and he rudely exclaimed it is not a VA problem it is a Treasury problem now. The thing with the VA is they said he qualified for benefits and after several years they then said he did not and that he had to pay all the monies back. He lost a lot of hearing in the war and should qualify for something but they will not assist us. We contacted our Congressmen about the abusive and harrasing phone calls and they are helping to resolve the issue with the VA. But, if this company is trying to collect for the VA then they are breaking the FDCPA after being told not to contact my great-grandfather and to instead contact the Congressmen.

I am very upset that a 90 year-old WWII Vet would be treated with such disrespect.

If anyone would like help in getting info about this company for a lawsuit contact me I will try to help.

Indeed they do seem to be wrotten; I couldn't believe how nasty this woman was.

What gives DCS the right to call me and curse me out? I don't owe money.

I know collections agents and the secret to their success is empathy and compassion; not arrogance, condescending, foul-mouthed people like the DCS agent that called me.

I was thinking the reason social security has problems is because of federal mismanagement and politicians taking kickbacks while robbing taxpayers money to bail out free enterprise. They could save groups of money by cutting out the scumbug collection tactics and agencies like DCS. I think a bailout for student loans would be more appropriate..at least we get something in return.

TaraB and the rest of you guys are HILARIOUS.  DCS Collects monies owed to Federal and State Agencies.  Mostly for defaulted student loans and taxes not paid.  Per the FDCPA, these so called "tactics" are completely LEGAL.  Per promisary notes (for student loans)agencies can contact friends, family, employers (past and present)neighbors, yes even you neighbors, anybody that may be able to get a hold of you.  Quite simply, PAY WHAT YOU OWE.  You are one of the reasons that social security funds are being cut, my son can not get a student loan, and military funds are basically nonexistent!  I case you didn't know, americans owe their own government over $217 BILLION dollars just in defaulted student LOANS.  THAT should upset you!!!

You know, there is no defense for this company. I understand people don't pay loans and they should be found. So, tell the person you're calling why you're calling. "So-and-so has defaulted on a loan. Do you know him?" I just got a call from a girl asking about a guy I never heard of. She was rude and threatening. I thought she was a scorned woman of some guy who had my phone number. Obviously she had my address. It sounded like she was about to come over and kick my a**. I actually looked out the window! If I didn't enter this number into Google, I would be calling the cops right now. You know, my mom just died. Do you ever think that the people you are calling might be dealing with bigger? What terrible people you are. How do you sleep at night?

I recieved the call around 7:00pm. The guy (Steve) seemed nice enough and apologized ofr bothering me saying he was trying to get in touch with my neighbor. The guy knew my name even though my name is not on the phone. He gave me the guy's name and and I told him I did not know who he was. I later found out he was looking for my next door neighbor. I found it weird that the caller already knew my name considering my name is not on the phone bill and my neighbor does not know me so he would not use my name for a reference of any type.

While I do not like my neighbor or the fact that they scream and swear at each other all hours of the night I do not care to get involved in their debt problems, but apparantly by the responses here it is a pretty common thing.

You all need to grow up! Seriously you have NO idea what you are talking about. It is called debt collection it is NOT harassment. These companies follow the FDCPA to the tee. Look it up sometime. They are doing their job cause people like you won't pay back what you promised the goverment you would pay. They can reposses a car if you don't pay, but they cannot take back your education. There are kids out there wanting to go to college but are being denied loans cause too many people will not pay them back to the dept of education. If you owe it is does not matter if you are working or not. You still owe it. If you cannot pay then it is probably best to garnish your wages.which they WILL do. You have to pay it bk sometime. Student loans or not dishargable in BK and will never go away there is NO statute of limitations. For all of you compalaining about calls, pay your bills and they won't have to call you. Honestly they are doing their job just like you do yours. For those of you who say you are unemployed, quit feeding people lies on here about companies practices and go out and find a job! And you all wonder why the country is in a financial crisis it is people like you that won't pay back federally funded student loans. Go google (skip tracing" or how about "section 488a" you'll see what they do is legal. Ignore them go ahead and enjoy the garnishment or your wages. The only thing unfortuante here is that there are so many defaulted loans that is why there are collection agencys. Someones has to do the job cause you certainly aren't grown up enough to take care of your finances.

This lady from DCS was nice when she called me.  I cooperated until almost the final step, then she gave me some weird information.  I am currently a student and i am taking out loans, when she told me one of my loans defaulted i thought it was strange, but i was willing to cooperate and do what i needed to do.  Towards the end when she wanted me to give references she started naming off people i didn't know from "prior" references i had.  I had no clue who they were.  Then i asked her when i took out these loans... she said 2003.. i was like... I started college in 2005.  She asked for my DOB, i gave it to her, then she said it was the wrong DOB and just to disregard the phone call... no apology at all.  Not even i'm sorry i wasted an hour of your time or i'm sorry we almost made you pay somebody else's loan off.  If I would've paid somebody's loan off i would've sued that company for everything they had.

-When they call you please make sure you ask when the loan was taken out.  Don't be like me and ask the most important question at the end, make sure you do it in the beginning.

-If my information gets out and used for fraudulent purposes i'm sueing the pants off this company.  I gave them a lot of my info and if anything starts acting up with my financial account.. a lawyer will be on them like white on rice... not uncle ben's rice though.

They called my house asking for someone with the same first name as me, but a different last name and told me that she lived in the apartment building down the parking lot from in 8A3...I live in 2A1.  She proceeded to ask me if I was friends with her or knew of her.  I kept telling this woman on the phone that I had no idea who this woman was, as I have never heard from her.  The woman proceeded to ask me over and over again if I've ever seen her or met her.  What scum bags these people are!

They keep calling and calling....
I know I owe on 1 of my old student loans now, I didn't know this until they called me up.  My ex-wife told me it was paid off, apparently it was not (she did the bills when we were married).  The last 2 years I wondered where my tax return checks have been going, but now I know they have been going towards the student loan, my own fault for not looking into it.  I planned on paying it back after the first call from Lisa Grey (no, that's not her real name, I once worked for a collections agency myself), but she called again while I was at work with a customer and she didn't appreciate it when I told her "now's not a good time, call back later" and became quite rude and a tad threatening.  For all I care now, they can keep taking it out of my taxes, another year or two and it should be paid off.

If you work for DCS, try using tactics which do not involve lying to the people you are talking to.  Someone called me today looking for a relative and when I asked them what it was in reference to, they stated "personal business."  I knew what it was as soon as I started talking to the lady, there's no need to lie.

Someone named Julie Wynn called and left a message for someone what wasn't me.  When I called the number on caller id, they said it was collection agency so I called the no. and asked to speak to her stating, I was returning a call.  They didn't have any of my information, but kept asking for my social over the phone.  I told them I wasn't going to give them any of my information, if they didn't already have it.  Weird, something is fishy!

I suggest calling the better business bureau in your area to see if they can find something out about this company. Maybe make a complaint on the BBB online.

They have called me too, but I have a life to live and do not answer the phone if I do not know the message.
I suppose we can not trust our celphone companies to keep our number private.
I also owe a student loan, but I am unemployed right now. So not able to pay. Company layed me off. How I am going to pay my bills?
