They absolutely do say FREE and  then try to charge an 8$ insurance fee.  Why lie about a raffle?  Why not just say your having a special?   The lying is what really irritates me!  And for those of you who want to comment that this is still a good deal and  " Maybe all you fat porkers should take this amazing deal and get your pathetic obese lives a TINY bit healthier. You are all grown adults, be resposible for your actions when SIGNING A CONTRACT!" , I have a membership at a much nicer place already, am definitely NOT a fat porker, and definitely did not sign a contract, I answered my phone!   I definitely think honesty has lost its way!

Hey Mike,
You sound like a classy guy. :) I am certain you learned those very large and eloquent words while at college, am I correct? Or, perhaps you work at one of these cool gyms? LOL. Save your breath. You don't impress or shock us with your use of the word "va**na"...everyone just feels bad that you think you're so awesome. HA.
Thanks for all the posts. I too was called on my cell for a Jackson, MI Powerhouse Gym, ( the one on Horton Road). A young girl called, I was told my name was drawn in a raffle, and I won two "free" memberships. I was also told about the $8.00 fee for each of us. I was not told I would have to pay it up front. Won't be going there and will be warning my friends about this scam.

This number is a scam and a spammer.  I googled the number to see who it was since I don't answer unknown numbers and found out it is some spam bullsh*t about a "free" gym membership to somewhere in royal oak.  I don't live anywhere near royal oak, I don't even know where the f*ck that is.  F*ck these *ssholes and their spam bullsh*t.  Don't answer any calls from these clowns.

I will admit that it is a good deal. Thats not my problem. My problem is when you scam and lie to people to get them there, and when you screw over your own employees and dont think twice about it.

Just got the same call, 2 free memberships for 2yrs to Royal Oak Gym. The caller said I won a raffle, but I just got back from traveling out of the country so there was no way I entered a raffle. Plus, I don't even go to Royal Oak. So, I decided to look up 'Gym membership call, raffle scams' and I got this site. The number that called me was 586-803-8241. All she asked was for my name and what day and time I could claim the "prize". Oh and to talk to Alan/Jim.

I just received a phone call from 586-803-8248 and my husband got teh same call from two different but similar numbers to the one above all saying we won a free 2 year gym membership at Powerhouse gym in Farmington hills.  When I questioned the young girl about the area code they were calling from she couldn't really answer me.  I eventually called back and told her not to call me anymore and she yelled at me and hung up.  Glad I read this website...what a scam!!

I was told a friend entered me in a drawing and that I had won two free gym memberships for two years. Considering that I know which gyms my friends use and the location is insanely inconvenient for me and most people I know, I assumed they were lying. Its fine if they want to run a promotion by telemarketing. I personally avoid business who choose to harass their clientelle with annoying phone calls but I'm sure it must work for them with others.  But lying to me...well, that is crossing the line from simply annoying to scamming.

(586)566-6279 & (586)566-3380.  "Loren" acted like we were pretty tight & said she wanted to make sure 4:00 was still good for me.  Figured I might as well run with it until these posts came up on reverse lookup.  This site's going on my favorites list.  Thanks guys!

Hi, I just wanted to let all you people know that I myself have worked for the world gym and concorde fitness and they are a very respectable company. Anyone that thinks this is a scam is crazy! Tell me any other gym that offers a promotional deal like this. You only have to pay $8.00 a month and it is good for two years everything is included. I can tell you myself I have been to a lot of other gyms and not one of them can top this offer. So I think you guys should all get over it, either take advantage of the deal or don't. It's not this big elaborate scam like all you people wanna make it out to be.

I got the call today from a (586)566-7148. i was wondering if i should answer because i usually dont answer numbers i dont know and i didnt even know the area code, anyways i did answer because my girlfried always says i should incase its someone i know or something has happened.B***s***. The person was a young girl and she informed me that i won the raffle aswell. The 2, two year memberships. I was very questionable from the start, because no one that i know works out there or even lives close to there. I knew it was a scam so i questioned the girl about who entered me and what it was all about. then she said something about a family member or friend must of entered me. The funny thing is that I JUST GOT THIS PHONE and about TEN people have my number so far, so that narrowed the odds of someone entering this number in a raffle knowing it was me. Then she did a cheesy verifacation thing just asking my name which to think of it now i should of said "what does it say on the card" haha just to mess with her. knowing fully there isn't a raffle card. She also mentioned the 8 dollar insurance cost. which no other gym has ever asked for before, so that is another give away of this bad scam. im just suprised that someones job revolves around calling and lying to people all day.IM GLAD I FOUND THIS WEBSITE IT GAVE ME SOME MORE INSIGHT ABOUT THESE PEOPLE AND THE SCAM THEY ARE PULLING.

p.s. why would someone waste there time with posting something happy about this scam on this website? i dont mean to rant but if you win a raffle and your suppose to feel special and be the winner doesnt it bug you that a ton of other people are supposed "WINNERS" of this scam. why would you even waste your time and money...

I signed up for the membership and was informed of the monthly fee. They were able to make payment options for myself and I knew what I was getting invovled in. I signed a contract and did complete my obligations. I am satisfied that I was able to save so much money and it is well worth it!

Thanks so much for your post, I too got the call and "won" a free membership and until I read your post I was considering it, since they offered free child care and I really didn't think $8.00/month was that much, but now thanks to you I do not want to have any part in this company. I believe that this world needs more honest people like you, so companies can't get away with doing business this way. It is very upsetting that they would treat their own workers like that. I wouldn't like such dishonest people watching over my baby even if I was there, who knows what they would tell me if something happened to him. Thanks again!

I just got a job there. And it's my first week.
I think it's good pay. I get paid 7.50 an hour. Plus you know about the "bonus" and the commision you get on an appointment.
But I dont get what your saying. They obviouslly pay you cash...but what do you mean rip us girls off...?
Will I be oweing them money or something?
Will i be the one getting screwed over in the end?

I also got the call, and it ended up working out for me. I was a little upset about having to pay the maintenence fee, but it was just four installments of $35. It's a pretty nice gym and I think it ended up being worth the money

Yes it is true!!! I myself used to work there and it is a complete scam. We used to go through our own cell phones and find the phone number exchanges. Like 212, or 549 or 222 whatever the beginning number was. Then we would call at the beginning of the list like 549-00 01 02 03 04, we would call every single combination of numbers. We would tell them that they won 2 2 year memberships one for them and one they could give to a friend. We told them that they must have entered a raffle or a friend or family member put them in. When they would ask for a name that put them in the raffle, some of the girls would make one up. They would use a common name like Dave bc everyone knows a Dave some where. We told them they just have to come in a claim them. We tell them that both of the memberships are free, they just have to pay 8 dollars a month for insurance in case they get hurt in the gym that they would be covered. Or some girls would just say it was a maintance fee. By the way the insurance doesn't exist if you get hurt your screwed. So people come in t claim the memberships and they meet with either Steve or Evan, maybe another person if they are busy. Then they go through and explain everything. They tell the people it is 8 dollars and month for two years. If the person decides to take the membership then they ask them how they want to pay. Their biggest nightmare is if a person wants to pay in cash bc the customer is only expecting to pay 8 dollars. If they say they would like to pay with credit or debit card then they say ok that will be 8 times 24. They swipe the card for 202, 192 for the 2 years and a 10 card fee. The customer thinks they are only swiping for 8 dollars. They cover their butts by saying that will be 8 times 24. Even though the customer really doesn't realize what is going on. Many customers didnt even realize they had been charged 202 until they got home. Not only are they scammers to outside people. They scam their own employees. When I first saw the add that they were hiring it said hiring for front desk, receptionist, day care. I went in to apply for the receptionist position. I met with Steve who told me that all of the positions had been filled. He said that he had one positon left and it was telemarketing. He said all I would have to do is call people that won there raffles and let them know they won. Then when I started we were calling people telling them they won the raffle, except there was really no raffle, but I needed the job. So I get my first check and there are no taxes taken out. I asked Heather the manager there and she told me that the first 600 was tax free. At the time I knew nothing about tax laws, so I figured that they were being cool not taking taxes out of the first check. I get my 2nd check, no taxes taken out. I thoght for sure that my 3rd check would be right. 3rd check, NO TAXES TAKEN OUT. So I asked Heather( who goes by a fake name when she answers the phone it is Madison) again about the taxes and she said "Oh well we dont do that here" and I thought ok why didnt you tell me that in the first place, why did you lie to me. But I have no backbone so I didnt say anything. So I said ok I am going to be resopsible for taking all of my federal and state out and that is it. She said yes. Then I find out too late that not only did I have to pay federal and state but I had to pay all of the socail security tax as well. So I called the IRS to get the real info on what I should do. They informed me that it was illegal for us to be on 1099s because we were considered w2 employees, they said because we were provided a work place and we had rules and regulations and a schedule to follow. The IRS said that by 1099 us that they were trying to get out of paying the other half of the social security tax. Which is illegal. So they were srewing us, prettymuch making us responsible for paying there taxes too. So every one that worked there threw a fit. So they switched to a payroll company and w2. Well after about six months they were loosing so much money paying taxes that they just switched back to 1099 and didnt even tell anyone until they got there checks. So they pocket and extra 3 to 5 grand depending on how large they payroll is that pay period. They even admit to only hiring  highschool girls because they dont know any better. If you ever get call you will notice that is always a young girl. These people hire girls and dont tell them they are not taxing their checks, they dont know until they get there checks, and then when they do ask they tell them the first 600 is tax free. They wait until the sh** hits the fan before they actual tell whatever their version of the truth is. I cant tell you how many lies and crap I went through with that company. These people live in a 300,000 dollar home and are sitting pretty by scamming people and lying to young girls and screwing other people over. I just couldn't do it anymore. I felt so bad lying to people on the phone. Especially people that were really excited about winning. They would day things like oh you just made my day or I have never won anything before. I guess if you have to screw people over to become rich then I will never be rich.By the way they have like 16 lines so any number beginning with 586-566- usually is them. They own concorde fitness at the concorde hotel on gratiot ave. World Gym at 23 and schoenherr. and Powerhouse gym in Waterford.

I know someone who works at world gym at 23 and scheonnher and the concorde fitness as well. It is a scam !!! They get a sheet with random numbers to make a cell phone number and call people claiming they have won a two year membership.. there is no raffle it is completely random. You come in to claim these and they hit you with a $8 maintenence fee that you have to pay all up front ! . If you dont many of times they will swipe your card for the amount that is due so beware !!

I've been called twice now (once on 30 Jan 09, again around 4pm on 2 Feb 09).  The first time it was a girl named Kate or Katie (whom I actually spoke to), and the second time it was a girl named Angela (who left a voicemail).  The callback number on my phone shows 586-566-7049, but in the voicemail I received on 2 Feb 09 "Angela" states the callback number is 586-566-3380.  They offered me two free memberships to World's Gym on 23 Mile Rd. and Schoenherr Rd. that I "won from a raffle drawing." However, neither myself nor anyone I know has entered any raffle to receive this membership.  When I Googled "World's Gym, Raffle," I noticed this web site and noted that others received the same call within the past year and warned it was a scam.  When I asked how free the membership actually was, I was told there "might" be an $8/mo. "maintenance fee".  I suspect this is some sort of scam and have reported World's Gym to the National Do Not Call Registry.
