586-690-7686 is a telemarketer for a pricey security system.  This call came from Mt. Clemens, MI and I live in the South, what I need is security from telemarketers.

Mentioning firearms could be to your advantage or disadvantage depending on what a burglar is looking for so you may what to leave them wondering.

Called on 02/28/2014 @ 02:17 PM from Mt. Clemens, MI. No message was left. I assume since everyone who posted so far said it's Monitronics Alarm, it must be. Using FBI stats to scare you is a common ploy.  Here we don't waste telescammers time because it our time as well. We never answer callers we don't know. We get up to 10 calls a day and we'd rather spend doing something else.
There is another reason not to answer these calls. Alarm scammers in particular can be dangerous. If you keep them interested even for a few minutes, they think you don't have an alarm and have possibly made yourself a target. You don't know who you're talking to. But they know when you're home, your sex and your age by your voice or looking you up in the WhitePages. It's a dangerous game to play and I would avoid it.
If you answer by mistake, say you're happy with your alarm system and your pit-bulls and say goodbye. Hang up without setting yourself up for a possible burglary. Any dog is a challenge for a burglar. They hear and smell well. They make a lot of noise and when they bite they don't let go.

Yes, the typical home alarm scam.  Likely another front group for Monitronics, since every single one of these alarm scams I've gotten (except for 1!) has been for Monitronics alarm - they install it, they monitor it, and I'm sure they are probably the only name on the contract.  If you really, really have to spend that much for a $200 wireless unit and $35/mo for monitoring, go to their web site directly.  Otherwise, there are lots of other monitoring business out there that don't violate DNC and pre-recording regulations that cost less.

However, if you do get  a call - answer it.  Talk to them.  Ask every question  you can think of.  Be silent and make them fill the uncomfortable silence. Act interested, but non-committal. Never use the word 'yes'.  While they are talking to you - they aren't making money.  We have numbers on our side.  On previous calls, I've had them talking to me for 30 minutes (hey, I was driving home and nothing better to do on my commute).  That's 30 minutes of no other 'hot' leads and no sales for that telemarketer.  If only 15 people did that, he would have a bad day.  And given the number of calls they place, it just takes a small fraction people that are getting called, wasting their time, to kill their profitability.  I've suggested this before and had telemarketers extremely angry at me - because they know it will severely damage their 'business'.  Use our greater numbers and their business practices against them.  If every one that uses this sight just spent 30 minutes once a week talking a telemarketer to death, it would devastate their businesses.

Also, by talking to them, you can get more information to file a complaint with the FTC.  This, along with talking them to death, will attack them on two fronts.  When they can no longer make money telemarketing, they will have to stop.

Robo call trying to scare me with FBI home burglary statistics, then offering to install a free home security system in exchange for letting them put a sign up.
