Don't usually answer these calls but for some reason picked up this one.  Guy said something about legal documents for a Maria something-or-other; didn't catch the last name.  I told him he had the wrong number.  He asked me if I knew this person and I said no. He said they got my number from her contacts.  Apologized and told me they would  not call me anymore and that this Maria person would be reprimanded for falsifying legal documents. (Yeah right....)  It's too bad these scammers don\'t have anything productive to do like the rest of us!!!!

Just received a call from this number. The lady asked if someone would be available to accept legal documents for "Ray something" and then asked if I know this person. I said no and she said ok, sorry to bother you and you will not receive anymore calls from them. She told me to have a great day and sorry for the inconvenience.

Debt Collector
Have received a number of calls when they left no message. Received one message - very harrassing stating they were a debt collector and would be sending an officer to my work to serve papers. I tried to call back. The message stated it was a magic jack customer and the users mailbox was full and it could not accept messages. They used a name from a previous marriage I had not used for well over 10 years. I called the local BBB and they said if indeed it was a debt collector that you can always confirm this debt with any of the credit bureaus - and I agree with  what the one posts said - ALWAYS insist the information be put in writing and sent to you. Most likely a scam.

Someone from this number called me yesterday. My experience is the same as chilihead's.  I tried complaining to FCC, was referred to FTC, who referred me to CFPB, who referred me back to FTC or I could tell my story in the participation section of their web page.  Not one of these agencies showed any interest in looking into this scam.  Posting this experience may at least alert the general public to this scam.

I just got a call from this number. They claimed someone named Paul Klepper has listed me as an associate, they said they were trying to serve him legal documents for a law firm. They knew my families names and addresses. Attempted to call back but a Magic Jack immediate response answered. I searched for companies called UPS with the number as this was the number that appeared on caller id, and came up with United Process Service in New York. They claime to know nothing.

Debt Collector
My wife received a call from someone at this number claiming to be Mike Riley who told her that my brother had given her number as a point of contact and that he had a formal complaint filed against him. They needed to speak with him within an hour so he could be served or he would be taken to court without official service and have to pay a lot more money. He would not say what the call was about because it was private information but gave her a case number and a toll free number (888-283-5896) for him to call. When she told me about the call I first tried to call the number he called from with no success (straight to voicemail numerous times). I then called the 888 number and spoke with a female who kept asking if I or anyone in the household knew my brother. I repeatedly asked for this "Mike Riley" and was never transferred to him or given a direst number to contact him. I then advised her that work in the court system and am very well versed in the civil process, explaining to her that no one can be taken to civil court without first being served with an official complaint from the district or circuit court that has jurisdiction over the case. They needed to contact whomever they were trying to "serve" directly and if it was so important and the information was so private they would not be contacting third parties in the first place. I informed her to remove my wife's phone number from their contact list and that we are not to be contacted again for this scam. Let's see if it works. This company is NOT legitimate. Check them out for yourselves. they are not accredited with the B.B.B. Even their website looks like Tyco's-My first webpage with generic language that says nothing about what they do.

It was a lady calling. She said, "We have important legal documents for (friends name). Do you know (friends name)? We are trying to locate her so the Sheriff can give her the papers."
I couldn't help the lady, and hunged up. I called back to find that my result was a Majic Jack recording. My caller ID says U P S. Thought it was UPS because I am expecting a package.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
