Let me clarify... our ad in the yellow pages has an 800 number that is forwarded to our line, and we are charged every time it is dialed (if the call is under a certain amount of time). Some telemarketers crack open the yellow pages and just start dialing up random businesses, trying to sell them something. We are instructed to hang up on out of area numbers, because we do not service anywhere but our area code, and do not wish to be charged to have someone try to sell me something that we won't buy.

I work in a small, basement contractor's office. We have several phone lines, one of which is used solely for bringing in new leads, and has a pay-per-call agreement in the yellow pages. When a number calls that is not from our area code, we are instructed to pick up and hang up. If you think you may have made a mistake, and just hung up on an actual customer, then you simply call right back. I hung up on this number twice, and when I tried dialing it back, all I received was a busy tone, twice.
