The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I got a call from the same number by the same person, Patricia Williams, saying the same BS. I told her she was full of Sh** and not to call me ever again. They are scamers. Can you imagine the fools out there that might say, "um ok just tell me where to send the money" just because some loser on the other end of the phone DEMANDS that they do so without ANY proof!...

These people call me all the time. It's a collection company, and they ask for a man with the same last name and first initial that I have. In the past, a collections company told me this man is claiming that I'm his mother, but I don't have any children by that name.  I repeatedly tell them that someone is using my name fraudulently; they repeatedly tell me they'll remove my number from the list, but guess what?  They don't, and now when I answer the phone, they just hang up. At this point I'm letting all calls from long distance numbers go to voice mail if I don't know who it is.

I recieved a call today from this number also. The guy threatened to have a warrant filed against me. I tried to call back and got the voicemail. Should I worry about this? I have no idea what he was talking about.  I looked up the company mentioned in early posts and sawit is in Florida, but the area code is from Atlanta, Georgia area. Anyone know if this is a scam? Sounds like one to me, but I'm not sure.

I have been getting calls from an agency that I only found out today is Wasserman and Saul. They refused to give me any info, but repeatedly threatened to file charges against me if I didn't send them money immediately. I went to the Sherrifs Dept. who spoke with them and did verify that they are a legitimate company. But, they still refuse to give me a written copy of what i supposedly owe. So, can they actually file charges or is this all just a scare and harrassment tactic?

I just got a call from that number about my boyfriend. It is Wasserman Saul and Associates. A collection agency pretending to be a law office or litigators office. I am looking into this because they are not consistant with their information and they don't know answer to half the questions you ask them. i.e. " Why did a different phone number (complete different area code) JUST call me 20 minutes ago saying they were from the same office you are allegedly calling from. When you say this is not a switchboard call and his file is on your desk?"
Her response "Ummmm. I don't know I just came back and his file was on my desk".   WELL lady I want your postal service. Disregard this number.. or pay them.. This day in age I want proof before I give you ANY information.
