"Leatrice Parker" called again this evening. I answered and gave their system a few seconds to connect me with one of the women who are pushed by these robocalls to be "Leatrice Parker." When she did respond to my "Hello. Hello. Hello," it turned out that this number is now being used as a roof repair through insurance scam. She introduced herself as "Leatrice Parker" and took the time to be Southern cordial, accent and all, asking how I was doing this evening before getting to her scam script. She asked a poorly worded question about whether I had had my roof inspected because of the recent storms. (That would work in a large section of the country, but not here for a long period of time ? no violent storms, no hail, etc.) Something like "Have you had your roof inspected by your insurance company because of the recent storms?" (Not that they even know whether I am in a house!)

So I said in return, "I had my roof inspected but not by my insurance company. Are you asking if I hired my insurance company to inspect my roof?"

She went on to explain how that wasn't what she meant but, because I had trumped her "hook," she cut it short, asking how long ago I had had it done, if she might ask. I told her "three weeks ago" and she seemed genuinely surprised, saying, "Oh, just that recently! Well, have a nice day."

Once I understand the scam attempt, these kinds of selling a "service" attempts, I give the answers that tell them there's no potential mark here.

Coming here I see it's a number that has been used for various scams before but has been quiescent for a few months.

I've started taking the time to report these kinds of calls to the DNC once I learned that they had in fact shut down one of the multitude of "Card Services" scammers. We've got to pile on the complaints. Unfortunately that's the way it goes.

It's the same phone number as used in a scam that has been hitting e-mails.  Do a Google search on the phone number.  You'll find a lot of comments from people who have received e-mails telling them that they owe taxes on shipments coming through Europe, specifically Spain.  UPS says it's a total scam.

I received an email today saying I had to call a UPS claims manager and to pay some tax on a package being held by Spanish customs. However, I did not order anything, so I didn't need to check this out.  The email was sent to an old email address I haven't used in quite a while...but was checking to see if anything was in there.  I deleted quite a few emails that were just ads.  WHenever I get a phone number I don't recognize, I google it to see who it's from.  When I googled this time, I was referred to this site and thought I should also leave a message.  I NEVER answer these emails before I check them out thoroughly.

Of course, no EU nation or government organization charges taxes on shipments that might pass through a country or the EU in general.  They might tax goods that have a destination somewhere in the EU, but that notification would come from EU customs.

Below is a email I just received. Good thing I googled the info and the alert came up on 800notes. We send out a lot of packages different places but I am leary of anything like this because if it was truly UPS then they would have called. Plus I put the tracking # in on UPS.com and that was the first alert because it wasn't enough numbers. So don't fall for it. Its a SCAM!

1a. Don't call numbers you can't verify via a google search.
1b. Don't call numbers when the google search sends you to this web site! :)

2. NOBODY is looking to give away MILLIONS of dollars and only needs your bank transit information.

3. NOBODY is selling name brand goods at 96% off... Unlike the others this last one is 'technically' not a scam but a way to trick people into buying LOTS of 'bids' that you then use up in an attempt to get an iPhone 4 for $19.21 ... Yes someone does eventually 'win' the product and it DOES cost them $19.21 however all of the LOOSING BIDS are KEPT by the site running the 'auction' and the site profits HUGELY. You could get very very lucky and win something... however the same can be true with taking your life savings and putting it all on RED or BLACK, ODD/EVEN etc at the casino.

If you get this scam forward the header and message to fraud@ups.com, sales@us.corp.terra.com, and telefonica.com. They need to know their domain is full of scammers and do something about it. Below is the header of the scam I received and how to Sherlock Holmes a scam email:

The originating email IP is web1.frut.lv [91.90.234.4]. LV is the Latvia domain suffix. Eastern Europe is scam central. This is likely the actual location of the scammer.

I also was sent an email from customerservices@ups.com claiming I had to pay some fees on a package in Spain.  It gave me this number.  Scam.

send them to UPS  - they have had over 5000 complaints on this - I got this today, and I live in Spain !!!  - gona go find this scum bag

received e-mail today for same. certain things were a dead giveaway. 1) the e-mail stated they got my name and e-mail from the package, but the e-mail was addressed to "Dear Customer" not Mr.********. 2) there were grammatical errors in the e-mail. 3) I've never known UPS to "suspend" and "re-assign" tracking numbers. I printed the e-mail out with all of the sender info and turned it over to the local police. not that there is much they can do about it at the moment, but at least it's been reported and they are aware.
