ADVICE: Prepare phoney Credit Card information and keep it handy (e.g., in your wallet). When those "credit services" call you, play the dumb and give them this phoney information. The only "complicated" part is getting the CC number (you can google for such numbers; don't use random, as the digits must pass some checksum check), and the CC customer phone number; all the rest can be completely bogus. Then let them waste some time, and when they return with "the number is not in the system" you can say "I just moved; here's my old ZIP code" and waste more time.  Last I said: "But last week I gave the same number, and so the previous week, and it always fails ..." -- this makes them understand that you are a hard nut determined to fool them and waste their time, and maybe they'll do the effort to remove you from their dial list.

BTW -- here's the phoney information I used -- you can use it too --

Debt: About 7000, on one card.

Got this call, did not answer. When I called it back a few seconds later it said that the number was no longer in service. How is that possible? Caller I'd said it originated in North Dakota

They certainly do use redirect services, sometimes you can figure out what company owns the number they called from and report them as being in violation of the terms of service for the company.  But even when the number is not trackable to a redirection service, the people placing the calls are not doing the spoofing, a VOIP or redirection company in the US is.

So if you are Joe Schmoe in Mexico, and get a VOIP service in the US to give you a number that looks like it's from North Dakota, with the name "Tom's Plumbing", that's not because Joe Schmoe is a master fone phreak, it's because the US-based VOIP company is doing the spoofing.

My whole point is, instead of trying to track/report the people out of the country doing this, focus on the companies which are complicit in the scam that are located in the United States.

They don't need redirect services.  The have their own equipment.

If they used redirect services they'd be a lot easier to track down.

Air horn?  Useless on a bandwith-limited digital phone.  But it does get the idea across.  And if it makes you feel better...

I answer with a recording of the Telco 'disconnect' tone, called an SIT tone.  Frequently works, altho scammers are learning to turn off tone detection on their dialers.

C'mon, slandering drug users by somehow lumping them in with these a***oles is pretty mean.

Also, they don't spoof, they use business redirect services.

To top it off, they are not located in the USA, so they are not breaking any laws in their own jurisdiction, so FCC/FBI complaints do nothing.

If anything, the redirect services should be held accountable for fraudulent use of their networks, but they just play dumb/poor and let the abuse continue because they are getting paid.  (So it's the scammers and the redirect companies both making money off gullible people)

What a scam.

I use an air horn sound after I get them on the phone.  I have been getting less calls.  I guess when the speakers are up full blast, and that sound goes off in their ear they don't like it much.  But nothing else seems to work to stop them.  The people that work there know its a scam.  So I have no pity.

thanks billie!

there are just too many scam numbers that are reported on sites like 800notes....it would take days!

please feel free (anyone) to copy/paste my comment where you see fit.

these days the gubmint is involved in its own scams/coverups and the people have to not rely on it to take care of this phone scammer crap.

alerting and educating those you care about is the only way to thwart this ballooning scam industry.

if you want to read some good stuff on nigerian scammers getting scammed back go to 419eater dot com.
visit the different links on the top of the page. it will do your heart good (not to mention it is hilarious reading) to read the stories of scammers getting a dose of their own evil medicine. the peeps who do this are experts at turning the tables on these evil people and making them hop, dance and jump to their own tune. love it!

Good post concerning the lowlife card services scammers! You should post this on as many of the phoney numbers the card service scammers use that you can find, so as many people as possible can view it and hopefully take the advice!

received a call for the first time from this number on my cell phone.

interesting, because on cells the "1" that one uses to begin an out of area call on a land line is not needed nor does it show up on incoming calls. this number was prefaced by a "1". so i knew it was bogus.

if a number comes into my cell and it is not on my contact list (where a name would show), or it is not a number i recognize, i do not answer
.
if it is legit the caller will leave a message. these types of spam calls never do.

all of my phone numbers (land and cell) are on the "do not call" dot gov list and have been for years. a few months ago spammer calls started creeping in on the land line, so i re-registered my numbers. it does't seem to work like it used to, as the scam numbers are now coming in on my cell. somehow they are getting around the do not call list.....oh wait, the do not call list only stops legit businesses from calling you, and these spammers are just down and dirty crooks that don't give a sh*t about do not call lists!

there are SOOOO many different scams....this credit card spam here where they try to get your cc number so they call lower the interest rate, the "gramma" scam, where a fake "grandchild" calls and tells gramma he needs money to get out of jail and not to tell mom and dad, the nigerian scam where you send money to make money, romance schemes, fake charities calling to get a donation, the list goes on and on!!!

please people, there is a generation of great folks that do not use computers, and these folks are the main targets of these scammers. if you can educate the elderly people in your family or your elderly neighbors to the scams these days, it would be a deed you could be proud of.

it is one thing to be annoyed by these calls, but quite another to actually fall for the scam. i know of two elderly people that did, and they were not only relieved of their funds, but they were too embarrassed to tell anyone. both of them lived alone, one having recently lost a spouse. these are the prime targets for these spammers, and they will call 1000 numbers to hook one of these poor people.

the government is not going to save us here, heck it can't even save itself, so we the people must help each other. every person that is educated and knows to hang up is a person that will not be scammed.

The card service scammers, who try to fool us into giving them our credit card numbers so they can rip us off, use all spoofed (false) numbers. The calls are not coming from ND.

The do not call list works-- but only for callers who are legitimate businesses. The card service scammers, who try to fool us into giving them our credit card numbers so they can rip us off, are far from legitimate, they're simply drug- addicted criminals, trying to make money for their next fix by cheating the decent people of society. If we want the calls to stop, we need to warn the people who are not aware of these lowlifes, in order to dry up the scammer's sources of revenue!

Telling the call taker they're going to jail has no bearing on the frequency of calls you get from these spammers.  I'm guessing that they've just increased the number of people they call so they don't call the same ones as much as they used to or that some of their numbers get shut down.

The druggie card service scammers are lower than scum. Scum floats at the top of a septic tank--think of what falls to the bottom of the tank, and that's where you'll find the card service scammers! These despicable lowlife trash target the elderly in an effort to support their disgusting addictions. Their game is to pretend to be associated with our credit card companies, trying to fool us into giving them our credit card numbers so they can rip us off. Beware of these slimy creatures, and warn others, especially the elderly, who are less likely to have caller id and internet access to protect themselves against these, and other deplorable scammers. If these scammers live long enough to become elderly, ( most addicts don't ) hopefully the next generation of scammers will cheat them to the extent that they must live on the street or in the woods!

It was the drug-addicted "card services" scammers that called you. This group of people (creatures) pretend to be associated with our credit card companies in order to fool us into giving them our credit card numbers. Those that have been fooled have suffered severe financial losses. Beware of these lowlifes and warn others before they are cheated! These scum make money to support their disgusting habits by working on commission trying to cheat decent people, mainly the elderly.
