Just got a call from this number. The Caller id SHOWS "I" and no other information. When "James Jones" began talking about sending me a decal I said no, don't do it. He said he was calling on behalf of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.  He continued with his spiel about an amount that I would be comfortable with and I said no again. I finally asked him if he could stop talking and listen to me and he said he would. I asked him what it was about "no" he did not understand. I then hung up. He was still talking when I hung up. Being on the do not call list does no good whatsoever.

Live fundraising solicitation call (713) 955-5635 recorded 09 January 2014 ("James Jones" of "Area Services" fundraising for the National Police & Trooper Association)
Caller ID: "Houston TX"

This was a live donation solicitation call by a guy claiming to be "James Jones" of "Area Services" on behalf of the "National Police & Trooper Association". Your local police almost always encourage you not to donate to phone solicitations claiming to benefit the police because most of any donation would go to the fund raiser for "administrative fees", and not to the charity. These calls are essentially disguised telemarketing calls to line the pockets of a private "fundraiser".

Also of note, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) reports "This Charity did not provide requested information. As a result, the Better Business Bureau cannot determine if it meets standards."

Following is a transcript of this live fundraising solicitation call:

[[me] Hello?
[male voice] Is John there?
[me] Speaking.

[they] This is James Jones calling on behalf of the National Police and Trooper Association. This call may be reocrded for quality control. The reason for my call each year there are over one hundred law enforcement officers who are tragically killed in the line of duty in the US. The NPTA is just kicked off their brand new fund drive. As a paid solicitor with Area Services I'm going to send your brand new active supporter decal to you. Please display that proudly in the left rear window of your ve-hicle. Show your great support for these officers. As a special project of the International Union of Police Associations one of the goals for the drive is to provide immediate assistance to the families of member officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty. Now when you receive your pledge kit and decal, can the officers count on your for your support?

[me] Why, certainly.
[they] That's great. The top spots are the Gold booster at forty five, and the Silver's just thirty five. Which one's comfortable for you?

[me] Uh, well, I'll go with the fifty five. [I intentionally volunteered a higher amount]
[they] That's outstanding, you're making a big difference. [you can hear me sipping coffee] That's great. Now are you definitely comfortable with your pledge amount?

[me] Uh, yes.
[they] Ok great. That's going to make a big difference. I'll go ahead and transfer you to my records department. All they're going to do is verify your correct mailing address to ensure the pledge kit and decal do get out to you. My name is James Jones... [both of us speaking at once]

[me] Excuse me could you hold on for about ten seconds, just a minute please... [HOLD music at my end]
[they] Ok.

[me] Ok I'm sorry, I'm back.
[they] Ok. Ok. Hold on just one second [again you can hear me sipping coffee]

[female voice] Hi, thank you for holding, this is Danielle Wood, [again I put the HOLD music on] the records department, and I see you just made a pledge fifty five dollars for the National Police and Trooper's Association. Is this correct? [my HOLD music still playing] [female voice]...Thank you for holding...[male voice of James Jones] Hello? [my HOLD music continues] ...Are you there? [they disconnect]

I had to answer a couple times and was ready to hang up. I asked who he was and he started a lingo about how many police are killed each year. As soon as I heard that much I had to shout to talk over him and told him if he wanted money, he wasn't about to get any and hung up. Almost sure he was a scammer.  Caller id was charity.

I just got a call from this number asking for me by name. I answered and they said, " Ned Henry?" I don't give out my number and my number is private. So I said, "You have the wrong number". They said "Oh no I don't", and then I hung up and blocked the number on my cell. The voice was a man with a slight southern accent and he did not sound friendly. I called them back on another phone and it just routes to a voice mail. It's very curious and creepy. The caller ID said CHARITY.
