Boys and Girls, can we please not post the email, headers and all, over and over?  If you are here checking out the number, then you already have a copy of the email.  Just a brief summary of what you know and wish to share, in your own words, would be much more useful.  I know you are very proud and want us to know how smart you are, what with your "l33t mail skilz" and all, but this is just silly.

To Sarah,

Thanks.  Your post was both interesting and useful.

To Everyone Else,

Shame on you for such a poor showing.  We'll be watching you all very closely from here on.

Looking at the sender email address I suspect that the sender is probably an innocent girl (going by the name) who got her computer hacked and her computer is now being used to send out spam. She probably isn't even aware... like most people this happens to. Her IP isn't in any blacklists (except Spamhaus but says it is maintained).

I actually got 2 of the exact emails at the exact same time  but from 2 different sending email addresses so that seems to verify it for me (I am a newbie at this stuff however but just simply sick of spam) but then I noticed that the sending IP is the same both emails. Of course email addresses can be spoofed (to even look as if you are sending it to yourself to bypass your own security) so it could be the same computer sending the spam out. Who knows.

Either way do not trust this email. I forward all my spam to here: http://www.knujon.com/sendusspam.html

Hopefully he can put a stop to this spam for me???

Knitter,

Blacklists are in fact very effective if you use the right ones, although I agree that you should use them in conjunction with other types of filtering.  The truth is that no one method gets all types of spam operations, but a combination of approaches can dramatically reduce the problem.  There are certain ip ranges that are frequent spam sources, as well as some consistent domains.  Also, some RBLs are seeded by way of honeypots, which means that the filters are usually updated as soon as a new spam source comes on line.  I do a great deal of aggressive keyword filtering (currently 500+ rules in my filter) as well as having spam-assassin screwed down really tightly. The result is that I see less than one spam per day get through, when the actual incoming spam runs 200-300 per day (pre-filtering).

This is done all of the time.  It is called an RBL, and there are a number of them out there.  However, whoever is running your mail server has to subscribe to them, usually in conjunction with running Spamassasin.  If you want to know more just do an Internet search on "Real-time Blackhole List".

They stay in business because, as thieves, their overhead is very low, and because the public at large is much stupider than you can imagine in your worst nightmares, so they find enough victims to be pretty profitable.

When you think about it, are they really that different than the politicians who keep being returned to elected office by the public at large ?

No Tony,

It is illegal here as well, in a number of ways.  But there appears to be a certain lack of courage and aggressiveness in prosecuting these operations.

Imagine that, overly cautious bureaucrats, gumming up the works.

Thank goodness our kinsmen back in the UK don't face this sort of problem.

(It is unheard of there, I presume?)

Tom,

Everyone should call the number???  Have you lost your mind???

First, it is a very bad idea to call phone numbers in spam emails, because there are some spammers whose only goal is to get you to call a number which will result in a huge charge on your phone bill.  So, in general, this is terrible advice for that reason alone.

Second, and more to the point in this case, when you call him, you are giving him your phone number.  Do you really think a creep like this is not going to use your number to his advantage?

Let's see, you call him and annoy his voicemail, which is being culled by a bunch of mouth-breathers working on commission, meaning you have not bothered him in the least.

He, on the other hand, can put a robo-dialer to calling you at all hours of the day and night, using a little technical sleight of hand to make it virtually impossible to track it back to him.

Or, maybe your number simply gets automatically and indiscriminately added to his "sucker list", which he regularly sells to telephone scammers all over the world.

And yeah, I know, you'll show him, you'll report him to the Do Not Call folks, the FCC, the FTC, and his momma - good luck with that.

Some things you should know about all of this before you ignore me:

He can get your phone number even if you "block" your caller ID (so can I, and most every large business you ever called).  It is a pretty good bet that he can come up with your name and home address as well.

You, as a residential user, probably can't get his real CID/CNAM info.  In fact, if he is slightly clever, he can, for all practical purposes, defeat ANI as well.

Bottom line is, it is a very dumb idea to try and outsmart people who are doing this all day, every day.  The odds are that they know far more about how to exploit the technology than you do.  It normally takes a governmental entity to take these guys down, and unfortunately, they move at a glacial pace, if at all.  Sometimes the white hats can cause them some pain, but these guys can play rough, and you better have more than a clue if you want to screw around with them.

How rough?  Some folks who fell for 419 scams ended up dead, although most recently, a couple of the 419'ers themselves were the ones who found themselves toes up in Long Island, New York.

These folks are gangsters.  Don't play with them, just report them, educate your friends, and filter them out of your email.  Panasonic also makes some great phones with built-in call blocking if you have telephone scammers calling you.

P.S. If you are torrenting pirated software, passing around "cute and funny" or "sensational" emails, playing at being a script kiddie, or going to porn sites and watching videos, then your machine is probably a zombie by now, and you are a big part of the problem.  Even good anti-virus software isn't enough these days if you engage in these types of activities.  So, I hope you don't mind if they also download your banking info while they are at it.

HTH.
