I received several messages both on my personal phone and my work phone from this phone # stating his name is Jacob something or other and I need to contact them immediately and hire an attorney because there is a case against me and if they did not hear from me immediately he cannot do anything but wish me luck with what is going to happen to me in the next couple days.  I called the phone number and asked them who they were.  The person said he was from Williams Law Office.  The phone suddenly began echoing and the person said they would call back on another line.  I told him not to bother and that I know this is a scam.  Haven't heard a thing from them since.

Yes.  Even if they were a legitimate company, they're violating the FDCPA by threatening people with arrest and criminal charges for failure to pay back a loan.  Never pay any caller who refuses to identify themselves (company name, mailing and physical address and phone number) and who refuses to MAIL proof that you owe a debt and they have the legal right to collect said debt.  Refusal to mail documentation proving you owe the debt to them is another violation of the FDCPA.

Oh, and DO report the caller to the FTC, FBI, Dept of Justice and your state's Attorney General.

Debt is civil, not criminal, so you wouldn't be arrested anyway.  "These people" threaten people like this to scare them into paying a bogus bill.  Never pay any caller unless they mail proof that you do owe a debt and that they have the legal right to collect said debt (a bill or invoice is not proof).

I am a licensed attorney in the State of Illinois and a client of mine received a call from 720-324-2649 threatening arrest and reciting her social security number.  When I called they answered the "Williams Law Firm" and I spoke with a person who identified himself as "Ryan Coleman".  I gave him my bar number and asked that they provide me with information regarding the call that they made to my client.  They put me on hold for 20 minutes and then disconnected the call.

I called again and identified myself and asked to speak with Mr. Williams and they hung up.

This is the Colorado Rules of Professional Responsibility for attorneys regarding threats of prosecution.

Rule 4.5. Threatening Prosecution
RULE 4.5. THREATENING PROSECUTION
(a) A lawyer shall not threaten criminal, administrative or disciplinary charges to obtain an advantage in a civil matter nor shall a lawyer present or participate in presenting criminal, administrative or disciplinary charges solely to obtain an advantage in a civil matter.
(b) It shall not be a violation of Rule 4.5 for a lawyer to notify another person in a civil matter that the lawyer reasonably believes that the other?s conduct may violate criminal, administrative or disciplinary rules or statutes.
COMMENT
[1] The civil adjudicative process is primarily designed for the settlement of disputes between parties, while the criminal, disciplinary and some administrative processes are designed for the protection of society as a whole. For purposes of this Rule, a civil matter is a controversy or potential controversy over rights and duties of two or more persons under the law whether or not an action has been commenced.
[2] Threatening to use, or using the criminal, administrative or disciplinary process to coerce adjustment of private civil matters is a subversion of that process; further, the person against whom the criminal, administrative or disciplinary process is so misused may be deterred from asserting valid legal rights and thus the usefulness of the civil process in settling private disputes is impaired. As in all cases of abuse of judicial process, the improper use of criminal, administrative or disciplinary process tends to diminish public confidence in our legal system.
[3] The Rule distinguishes between threats to bring criminal, administrative or disciplinary charges and the actual filing or presentation of such charges. Threats to file such charges are prohibited if a purpose is to obtain any advantage in a civil matter while the actual presentation of such charges is proscribed by this Rule only if the sole purpose for presenting the charges is to obtain an advantage in a civil matter.
[4] This distinction is appropriate because the abuse of the judicial process is at its greatest when a threat of filing charges is used as a lever to obtain an advantage in a collateral, civil proceeding. This leverage is either eliminated or greatly reduced when the charge actually is presented.
[5] Moreover, this Rule does not prohibit a lawyer from notifying another person involved in a civil matter that such person?s conduct may violate criminal, administrative or disciplinary rules or statutes where the notifying lawyer reasonably believes that such a violation has taken place.
[6] While it may be difficult in certain circumstances to distinguish between a notification and a threat, public policy is served by allowing a lawyer to notify another person of a perceived violation without subjecting the notifying lawyer to discipline. Many minor violations can be eliminated, rectified or minimized if there is frank dialogue among participants to a dispute.
[7] Rule 4.5(b) provides a safe harbor for notifications of this type. Other factors that should be considered to differentiate threats from notifications in difficult cases include (a) an absence of any suggestion by the notifying lawyer that he or she could exert any improper influence over the criminal, administrative or disciplinary process, (b) consideration of whether any monetary recovery or other relief sought by the notifying lawyer is reasonably related to the harm suffered by the lawyer?s clients. Where no such reasonable relation exists, the communication likely constitutes a proscribed threat. For example, a lawyer violates Rule 4.5 if the lawyer threatens to file a charge or complaint of tax fraud against another party where issues of tax fraud have nothing to do with the dispute. It is not a violation of Rule 4.5 for a lawyer to notify another party that the other person?s writing of an insufficient funds check may have criminal as well as civil ramifications in a civil action for collection of the bad check.

Colo. RPC 8.4(2012)
Rule 8.4. Misconduct.
**reflects changes received through March 13, 2012**

It is professional misconduct for a lawyer to:
(a) violate or attempt to violate the Rules of Professional Conduct, knowingly assist or induce another to do so, or do so through the acts of another; [for example knowingly allow employees to threaten arrest]
    * * *
(e) state or imply an ability to influence improperly a government agency or official or to achieve results by means that violate the Rules of Professional Conduct or other law; [for example imply that you have power with police to have a person arrested]

Theese nitwits harrassed me for 18 months until i changed my number (im concidering calling this one and f***ing with them just to get back into the "loop" because the more time i waste of theirs the less time they have to devote to the more vonerable) I never bought into it...I did in fact take out a online loan and defaulted on the payments (had every good intention but just havent had the money since then and still intend to pay it in full) In my personal opinion they hacked the company I borrowed from and got my personal info (drivers license ssn home work address and phone numbers ect.) bottom line if they use it it leaves a paper trail even if its a green dot, western union transfer ect. Im happy to say since the phone calls began till now I have not been arrested and incarcerated due to a debt in going on 8 years (no debt collector/lawyer can do this it takes a court order) want proof of this....your reading this post lol

I don't know who they are I keep hearing its a scam and it sounds like it to me. They try to scare you with saying you'll be arrested tomorrow I've even read they told someone 2 hours but they can't do that you have to go through civil court first. I have not answered their  phone calls nor will I. I'll wait to be served court papers but until then I will NOT send them a dime. There is no way a law office is that unprofessional.

I receive several calls from this number weekly. I finally decided to talk to the person today. He said I owed almost $500 but if it went to court it would cost me over $8, 000!?!?!?!? Then he told me I'd I didn't pay it an officer would be coming to my job or my house within 24-48 hours to arrest me. I was also told I'd be held in jail for 2 weeks for investigstion purposes, then I'd be seen by a judge. How dumb do these people think we are?  Not 1 officer will call you to tell you they are going to come and arrest you. That would give you a chance to run away.

This number called me and said I owe them 782.00 for a payday loan. I never in my life had a payday loan. So my daughter called from her phone and asked when was the loan taken the lady named Jennifer said August 2012. So my daughter said she was calling the bank to verify the info, the lady started cursing saying you are going to jail if we don't get that money in 2hrs. But now the number stays busy. They upset my entire day had me in years by telling me I'm going to jail knowing I didn't do anything. Where are they getting our personal info because she knew a lot about my SSN and place of employment.
